Pineapple and Flower Fair open at Saphan Hin

PHUKET: The 20th annual Phuket Pineapple and Flower Fair opened yesterday evening (August 15) at Saphan Hin.

After the official opening by Governor Tri Augkaradacha, prizes were awarded for products in various agricultural categories and for the best pineapple somtam.

Provincial Chief Agricultural Officer Winai Kwankaew told reporters, “The provincial office arranged the first Phuket Pineapple and Flower Fair in 1993, and it has been held annually ever since.

“The intent this year is to promote agricultural products to the public by developing Phuket pineapple into the province’s ‘characteristic fruit’, which [we hope] will pique tourists’ interest and encourage them to eat pineapples, and buy them as souvenirs for friends and relatives.”

Besides pineapples, the fair also includes “a pageant” of other agricultural products, including white and black sator (stinkbean), high-quality unprocessed rubber mats, various fruits and vegetables, kitchen implements, products from local cooperatives; and “safe” agricultural goods. There is also an ornamental flower
competition.

The fair runs until next Thursday (August 23). – Source: Manager Online
