March 2010 - Sai Keaw Beach - Sattahip, Thailand

After hearing some golfing buddies tell me how nice this beach is , today finally made the trip to check it out - the golf course is a cheap place to play & the beach is a great place for a day out .

It is located on a Thai Naval Base so you enter via a guard post where you're asked to leave some official ID.

The grounds are huge so a car is ideal but a motorcycle will get you around just as well

Make your way to the general direction of the beach and you hit this little hut , where today we were informed the road was closed and we had to ride in a sonthaew.

You ride over a winding mountain road and the views were stunning

Hit the beach area around 9:30 am and a small crowd was making their way

This was Mahatma Gandhi Bucha Day , so a full on holiday

    The water was crystal clear

I was really impressed by how clean the beach was.

Had to grab some food for a brekkie and this Pad Kra Pow Gai was sort of OK , 30 baht was spot on.

Sandy Balls Dog got the left overs

Afterward looked around and spotted this wrinkly old white ass

Did a good few hours of swimming , rented a kayak for 100 baht an hour and basically had a good time.

There is a sit down seafood restaurant here and also a series of food vendors

It was now lunchtime and the beach had gotten pretty full.

Grabbed another feed and took a hot and dirty pic of it to share - 230 baht for a full grilled chicken and some somtam.

There are some bungalows on the beach as well that can be rented out , prices are not that great at 700 baht for a small one and 1000 baht for a larger unit - no electricity after 6pm , nor TV or air conditioning.

Back in the water and then the heat and crowds chased us away

So the all important toilet shot to complete the report

    Even VIP toilets

This sure is a nice little beach and I hope you enjoy this report.

I'd like to know to get there - I've lived in the area for damn near 8 years but have never been. I've tried, but have been rebuked by guards doing the hand-waving "no-no-no" routine. I think I was turning on the wrong road. Where's the turn off from Sukhumvit?

Heading towards Sattahip from Pattaya , pass Nong Nuch Gardens - look for the second pedestrian walkway bridge and make a right onto the Naval Training Center Base.

This is before the main Sattahip Naval Base

They will let you in if you say you're going to play golf.

Thanks, I'll try again. Lovely pics, BTW.
I've also heard that you must be accompanied by a Thai person, is that true?

    Nice report, btw.

No, but the guards do need some form of id that they will understand, ie work permit or something like that, they don't read English so your passport may not be acceptable.

You can just say your going to the beach, but a lot of the beaches in Sattahip are weekends only.

Not that I saw but you will be charged double, 30 baht for Thai Adults , 10 baht for Thai kids - 60 baht entrance fee for the beach for all other nationals.

Surprisingly there where plenty of Russian about so they all know about the place.

I have not golfed there , think it is a 9 hole course with reasonable green fees.

I'm surprised when there aren't plenty of Russians about these days.
Perhaps Issan is the only area free of Russians, I made a trip up there over the Xmas holidays, didn't see one Ivan.

Good post I have been there a few times. The beach is just as you describe it and the water is very clean. Deck chairs are available too.
I have played the Golf course on a couple of occasions, it's fairly short but challenging if you go around twice for the 18 holes the cost is 450 Baht.

    Cheers, Rick

Yes , self service from a concession stand.

You carry the shit down to the beach yourself and return it for a monetary deposit.
If I remember correct chairs were 20 baht with a 30 baht deposit , small tables that were in short supply were also available for the same price.

Now, there's one thing about the isamus of kra (forgive my spelling) I lived on Samui for 4yrs, and the water mainly looked something like that. There generally ain't much of a tidal flow from what I can remember, meaning that the crap just floats around in circles!!!!

The Bangkok Samui hospital tested the water around Samui in 2005/6 and found that it was full of coloriform bacteria...Shit!!!!! way over the allowed levels.

So it may look clean but you can't see the little beasties lurking!!!!

I hope this isn't the case there and it maybe far enough out to be clean....looks nice an all.....

This was in an isolated enough area that I think the water was naturally clean , as it is tidal and unlike Pattaya and Jomtien there are "0" hotels and businesses dotting the coastline around it.

^^ Cool, I hope you are write.

A guy from off here told me that he had taken his family down to Hua Hin and that after a few hours his kid came out of the sea complaining about a rash.
He took the child to the hospital and was promptly told by the hospital not to go in the sea, it's not safe...and very dirty...
That'll be the chemicals Thailand pumps into the sea from many factories and especially the Shrimp farms all up and down the east coast.

The west coast rules in comparison...Indian ocean is vast and the currents will move any crap quickly.

Here you gotta watch out for box jellies now....cafeful out there TD'ers. Scary place the sea these days.

Me and Mrs JYY went there last thursday. I'd been looking forward to going there for a while as we usually stay at Jomtien, and I facied a change.
It's a lovely beach. 10mins after I'd settled into my deckchair, I asked her what she thought of the place, expecting a good response...........wrong.
She reckoned the place was full of poor people!!!!!!!!! I then reminded her where she came from, ie, a wooden shack in the middle of a rice field, in bumfeck nowhere.
We didn't speak for the rest of the day, and instead of heading off to find a guesthouse for a couple of nights, we drove back to Bangkok............in silence.

Next time I'll go on my own
Do not walk beside me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me for I may not follow. Just pretty much leave me the fuck alone!
