Thread: Phuket pics - early May.

I had to take two trips to Phuket during May, one for drinking and rugby, the first for my nephews wedding combined with some time off in Karon.

The first pics are karon Beach, I have posted one or two of these on here already for another purpose.

When in Karon the kids like to stay at the Ramada on the North end of the beach. it has good kids pools, kids club and the rooms are good. this time was so cheap we had 2 adjoining rooms for less than we paid for one last time. Means they get their own TV and leave us alone in the evening.

Yes, I like that Ramada hotel.......... and at the right end of Karon to shoot up to Patong!

Live a few miles from there but seemed to lose interest in the place a couple of years ago.

6 Indonesian fishermen had drifted for, I believe, 5 weeks or so with a broken engine and their boat was washed up in Karon beach .

Help a shipwrecked mariner ? - you have to be joking .
They were slammed in jail for illegal entry and within a couple of days their boat had been completely dismantled and carried off - down to the last bloody nail - by the welcoming locals !

Would probably happen elsewhere in Thailand but this really pissed me off!
The poor sods were fined and deported !!

Hundreds, but not on that trip. Interfering Indian tailors and irritating tuk tuk drivers are not my idea of photogenic.

There was literally no other bastard there.

How do you do it?
HDR means taking several pictures with different shutter speed in order to extract as much details as possible from poorly lit areas and "melting" them together with for instance Photoshop, am I right?
I mean you are taking pictures from moving objects like wawes and clouds. I would think that before you would have been able to change the settings on you cam, these moving objects would be totally blurred, but they are not.
Are you able to program you cam to take a fast sequence of pictures with different settings?
Anyway the result is stunning! Turning otherwise ordinary scenery into something special.

i was thinking a bit simpler like a graduated filter.

but a bit of photoshop would have helped.


thats the trouble with great photos now, you dont just think great photo - you think what bit of photoshop did they use. shame really.

probably 3 versions from 1 RAW merged as HDR.

If you think manipulation started with Photoshop you are wrong, but it is a bit easier now.

Nope, 3 different exposures, and yes, there is also a graduated filter on the camera.

If I remember correct 1 neutral density and 1 orange on a couple of obvious ones.

The exposures were deliberatly slowed as I wanted the water to be slightly blurred

Oh and I didn't use Photoshop, but I agree with Big Red, there is hardly an unmanipulated photo out there these days, but there rarely was before. It's still art.

I like the effect of HDR, more pastel shades. I'm going to Angkor again next month and I reckon it'll really work there, everything will be shot from a tripod with +2-0-2 EB.

Wow, even if it was cloudy and windy, the HDR etc sure makes it look more severe. Dante's inferno seems a cosy place in comparision
