A fishing community and their dogs - Hua Hin

First, I just want to say that I didn't take these photos. They were taken 4 years ago by an Irish lady who came to visit our dog center. She had been fascinated by the way the poorer Thais and the soi dogs co-exist together & taken photos. She also took many photos of our dogs & gave me a CD containing all the pics.
I found it the other day, while searching for a pic of one of our adults as a pup. When I looked at the photos, I thought they were really good and might be appreciated here. I really hope she wouldn't mind me sharing them...

This is the fishing community that lives just past the main (only) concrete pier in Hua Hin (in case anyone knows the area)

First some pics of their houses:

with the obligatory beach dog, of course.

Here are some of the people that make up this particular fishing community

Note the Beer Leo to help them unwind at the end of a hard day.

Of course, the dogs have to get in on the action - or maybe just this little pup...

And here's the little boy again 'ab nam'

And, of course, no matter how many soi dogs live outside, the fluffy little thing is purchased to live inside

And just a little way up from the beach, a more typical response to pesky soi dogs

I don't know how human beings can live like this. That'd take 10 minutes to clean up but has probably been like that for months.

Are those shacks still there NR? Or do the fishermen up and move around alot?
They look fairly permenant. I've seen alot worse.

It would be fair I think to make the generalisation that manual workers in this country don't really give much of a toss about there hygiene conditions and the beauty of their surroundings. It's more a case of we are here to make money and balls to everything else.
When I did my stint on the camp when I 'went native', I, personally had to organise a refuse disposal rota, where rubbish would be discarded in wheely bins nearby everyday. The chaps and lasses reluctantly did their part. I'd puke my guts out because of the smell in the earlier days.

Anyway, thanks for sharing. I particuarly like the pics in post 11.

They are probably squatters, and nobody has the guts or get up and go to move them.

Terrific photos and a nice thread. Thanks. Shame smeg had to interrupt it. Still, that's the way he is I guess. Great thread though. I reckon the lady that took the photos would be very proud.

Adorable picture. It just baffles me to see so many soi dogs in Thailand. In Korea, you have many abandoned cats. They are looked at as dirty, and unwanted. Little dogs are really adored. Why does there continue to be such a huge problem with soi dogs?

Funny you should mention that. A lot of that area was demolished about a year ago, but I'm not sure about this community. I'd planned to go down there with my camera (OK, the pics won't be nearly as good) next week and take pics how it is now.

Where shall I start? Buddhism is a problem in that they won't put dogs to sleep even if suffering and in many cases won't neuter. Actually, that's the main problem - no Govt subsidised neutering programme. Foreign orgs like SCAD, SDF, Samuidog, Carefordogs & ours (& others), as well as Thai run ones like Dogchance neuter as many as we can - but we just hit the tip of the iceberg. It needs to be Govt endorsed (perhaps even law!) to work.

NR, is there a religious or cultural connection to the dogs. When I was in an Aboriginal community for a while the dog problem was huge. The feces caused ocular problems for the kids, plus all kinds of other issues. We pushed for a vet to come and neuter and put down the sick dogs. Trouble was the people went mad and there were some major battles due to spirits, spiritual connections and some very weird legends about the Alawa people and their dogs.

I just wondered if there was anything similar here in LOS?

Yes, we're constantly battling- sorry, trying to educate people. I refuse to help (vaccinate & medicate) any temple that doesn't agree to let me neuter, as does one of my friends. A lot of temples won't let you 'interfere' with the reproduction of dogs, but are quite happy for you to 'interfere' to save the dogs lives or feed.

Most ill-educated Thais refuse to let males be neutered. But if they get genital cancer (sexually transmitted) who pays for the chemo & takes them to the vets? Us.

A lot of Thais also believe in the contraception injection rather than surgical neutering. The fact that it is proven to cause pyometra, which can kill, is neither here nor there.

And they will not euthanise. I have lied sometimes about dogs that have 'just died' when I had them euthanised for incurable diseases.

Maybe intended to keep away farangs of your specie. Remember they were here before you . You can as well go to live in the Bahamas.

Why will they not euthanise? Sounds extremely stupid considering you have a lot of sick and injured dogs out there.

I volunteered at the Soi Dog shelter in Phuket a few years ago. The dogs were being sterilised, and being adopted out to locals and from people abroad.

See thread here. I hope it is kosher to post a link to ajarn on here.

Because euthanasia is murder in many Thai eyes. Was that Soi Dog Foundation in Phuket (sorry, haven't clicked)? They're excellent. We also adopt out our dogs, nationally & internationally. CMN & Jandajoy both have one of our dogs (thanks, guys!) and we currently have 2 waiting to go to UK, 1 to Germany and 2 to the Czech Republic.

Nice thread NR, you did the right thing sharing your friends pics. Is that little bit of beachfront just up the road from Chomsin Street?
