Advice wanted: We're going backpacking, almost...

I don't have a backpack, just a sports bag, she has a small rucksack.

I can chuck all our clothes and everything else into my bag faster than having to fold it into a backpack. And if I need to get something out I don't need to blindly rummage around then take stuff out just to get my false teeth

We're tavelling lighter and more stylish

Was frustrated at the small number and lack of convincingly decent places suggested by all the online hotel websites, Always used them to reassure myself that sleeping arrangements weresorted. But what happens is I always would see several better places that weren't online, often better deals.

We wanna go to Koh Muk, Koh Libong and any other neighbouring island in that vicinity. Once again, online they spew up the same places on each site. Agoda reel you in with low prices but minus tax, and booking.com have a habit of pretending it's the last room available.

Anyway, we're landing in Trang, and that's about it. Nothing booked onwards and no getting ripped off by those van and boat combination rip offs.

We use pblic bus/songthaew to the Hat Yao pier at Trang. Where to next?

We're gonna find bungalows on arrival.

It's doable but I need some pointers from you lot.

Heres a pointer- Take a tent in case the place is at full occupancy.

Surely that wonn't be a reality

Was hoping to avoid a tent scenario.

Koh kood is easily doable on a backpackers budget Pat.

The Thai travellers the missus spoke to on the songteaw stayed at the 'Mangrove'.

Heres my thread on Koh Kood

    https://teakdoor.com/living-in-thaila...ice-again.html (Turned out nice again)

Edit: scratch that i see you are going Trang not Trat and Koh Muk, not Koh Mak

Seems this is another way of saying "I am skint", and need to travel as cheaply as possible. Romantic journeys in a songtaew sound like a turn on to me.

For a start it is easier to carry a backpack than a bag but I guess you wont be planning on walking far.

To find places to stay go to google maps and type in Trang then zoom in on each island in turn. I just zoomed in on Koh Mook and see it is full of resorts as well as other places to stay. They even have a ting tong bar which would probably suit you.

Click on any one and a panel comes up on the left with info on the one you clicked on, most have reviews by people who have stayed there some have phone numbers and costs.

Do this with anywhere you want to go and make a shortlist. If they have a phone number call them, in Thai, and ask about things like costs, getting there, where to eat and anything else you want to know. By phoning you will also get an idea of attitude with the lady boss saying she likes the sound of one or the other.

If you are heading there in January, on a budget and with nothing booked, then I agree...consider getting a tent.

Or change your hair dye from 'Mick McManus' to the 'Norwegian' setting, and get some holiday photos printed for sale.

My advice: You'll be faster with a rucksack than a sportsbag when doing a runner.

Just do it - what's the worst that happens? You spend a night in a doss house or drink through the night and sleep on a beach all day?

Not about skintness. Just that I've scoured all rip off options and some are just plain stupid, eg.Van from Trang then speedboat almost 600. Songthaew to pier then local boat comes to around 200.

Ditto hotels online, many claim to one room left but we know that's a load of bullshit. Now I have a traveloka code valid 48hrs (just booked flights through them) we won't be scouring around for a bungalow on arrival.

Actual hotel/bungalow budget is around 900. Just that in the past I've booked in advance only to see place not online that are cheaper and better.

But keep the suggestions coming. They're well appreciated.

Apart from a couple of above posts.

Consider using compression bags to pack more, or zip lock bags at a pinch.
You're right about Booking and Agoda, you should check the accom's website or phone them.
Often found it cheaper than either the main players.

After coming back from a Chaing Rai province tour over the 6 days I will concur. I was deceived on a balcony size, and occupancy and then found out the walk up rate was 20% cheaper than on a booking site at another hotel. Booking and Agoda are owned by the same bigger company anyway.. On 4 and 5 star properties they offer deals, but 2 and 3 star are probably better booked directly. Did find one true gem off Booking on this trip though.

Freaking cold up there. Thursday on Doi Tung 7 degrees at 1pm

Pat being Thai, I would've thought you'd know all the best places at the best prices, You should ask all your Thais friends if you don't know.

might be more fun and cheaper to get a tent and go around and camp on AO's back lawn.you can eat all his shit food, drink all his piss, and even burn a few hot ones with the great man.and don't worry about toilets, you can piss on his lemon tree and have a dump in his garden if you want.iam sure you will be welcome.

Have fun, I've never been to Trang that area. I'm sure you can figure it out on your feet once you are there. I think you are well travelled enough and perhaps speak some Thai or your gf does , that you won't be stuck and out of luck.

Booked a place on Ko Mook called Phusam Big Resort, got a garden view bungalow with tv and aircon. They claimed it was one of two remaining bungalows. That's gonna be the first 2 nights.. Still looking what island to move onto after that.

I've noticed a lot of reviews about Ko Lipe hotels mention piles of garbage and dirty beaches. Not going anyway but did browse. And naming a beach after a cesspit doesn't appeal either.

Koh Kradan looks interesting, thus far. Ko Libong is also an option.

Kradan is boring. Nothing there. Trang mainland is more interesting. Never been to Libong. Lipe is the new Phi Phi. Long way to go to pay high prices to stay next to backpackers.
