Nice truck. Loving the pictures so far since Chawaeng is where we go on Samui and stay for free thanks to some very generous friends too.

So stopped at Elephant rock and got the obligatory shot back to Chaweng Noi and Yai.

There sure was no huge IT center here before, big place with everything, just on the Chaweng side of Lamai.

Then you come to Lamai which is less changed than Chaweng, some of the old joints are still there like Sand and Sea

    The start of Lamai beach

Some of the cheaper huts I saw 450 for no air con and a fan.

Then we come to what I think is the oldest and best preserved village on the island, Huathanon with its wooden shop houses facing the ring road.

The same doctor and clinic I visited after my first motorcycle accident here oh so many years ago.

Coming on the ferry from Don Sak once you got close to Samui you could see a monstrosity on the hill near the ferry jetty, I thought it was some Thai style hotel, nope big surprise its the Koh Samui Provincial Court building.

The one place that to me has changed the least would be Nathon the main town, here it is 25 years ago.

    And today

Enjoying your thread AO, i like the comparison pics past and present.

I stayed on Lamai Beach at New Hut 12 years ago. 150bht for a bamboo beach bungalow with fan, mattress and mossie net - the best view.
The sea was clear and full of fish and the beach was all clean.
Returned in 2006 with the family and a rocky fishermans pier had been made, the sea was no longer clear and the beach full of litter.

Ahh. Huathanon - lovely little fishing village with the 7/11 on the corner. Keep it coming - out of rep at the mo.

Fantastic stuff, especially that you still have all those old pictures to compare and contrast the Samui of old to today.

I was in Chaweng a few years ago and simply shocked at how it's been built up (overbuilt). Used to be you could see the beach from the main road. Not anymore.

And at night, the stereo wars between neighboring resort nightclubs was quite annoying. Samui still has some nice spots, but Chaweng is well past its prime... :/

This is the part that is funny. 20 to 35 years ago Chaweng Noi was the place and it included the first few resorts of Chaweng Yai, then it was dead and on the beach coconut trees, and going inland swampy great for buffalows. Just over 20 years ago the area that is huge now began to develop, and develop it did. I have gotten lost down there twice in two days. Finally figured out where the one way roads go. I think I know but dont go down there at night, and only have walked the beach down there. The only thing that had started was Reggae Bar.

Really enjoying this AO, 25 years ago I was all about living in a shitty little bungalow for 150 baht a night, these days I want (Demand actually) constant electricity and a fucking serious air con, why not eh, some will say the island is now spoilt, bollocks, looks alright to me. The pic on page 17 with the little villa right on the beach with a pool out front would be right up my alley. Hope you and the family are still enjoying it.

    Yer,

Places are what one makes of it EH.

One can sit around and say " you should of been here 20 years ago " or just get on with it.

I prefer to get on with it.

There are some beautiful places to stay on that island with deserted beaches, hope you dont mind me putting these up AO

Centra Coconut, southwest of the island

Centara Villa Resort at the South East of the island

Now contrast that to Chaweng Beach, while we were there

Sorry for hijacking your thread AO. Ah fack it, might as well add a couple of family pics

Oh before I go, here's that pussy photo I promised you Iceman. It's on there somewhere, where I dunno. But apparently theyre the 2 biggest phallic symbols on Samui, now Somtamslap and Withnall have left

The 7/11 you are talking was rebuilt a couple of years ago after a huge storm knocked down that huge Buddha tree in the car park, and demolished it.
There is also now a 7/11 on the other corner, where you turn down towards the Tiger zoo/aquarium, and a Tesco Express in between them.

I stayed here when I first came to Samui about 5 years ago. The owner is very helpful and the location great if you want to escape the crowds but stay in touch with civilisation.

Samui Reef View Resort • Welcome

Many a good time had at the Billabong bar on the main high street in Lamai.

Don't know if it's still there or still being run by the two English guys.

    Good pics.

The stretch between Ban Taling Ngam and Thong Krut was my personal favourite location on the island. There's a local shop there that no one knows about.
