Your favourite beach in Thailand

Where and why?

Got some oldies coming over from the UK for the first time in a few months. They want a week on a beach. I'm thinking KPG, as the over night train journey from bkk to surat thani is a good trip I think they'll enjoy. However, that said, I've never been down south (Phuket, Krabi etc) but see it looks nice. Thing is it's very far down south and we'll be going up north too so something closer to bkk would be better. They will just want to sit on deckchairs and wonder around looking at stuff - no yabba raves or hair braiding

Any good suggestions folks?

I like Thung Waelen beach just North of Chumphon. A 2km pristine beach with some nice little restaurants and if you go there mid week it is practically empty. You don't get hassled to buy any croaking frogs or table cloths every few minutes either. A few small resorts there the biggest being the Cabana resort. Several years ago was a 5 star resort but now a little dated. Still worth a look though as not overpriced.
If it is island life you are looking for then my favourites are Koh Chang or Koh Payam on the Andaman coast side South of Ranong. Koh Chang is the smaller with no roads or a pier, they just get you close to the resort then you wade in. Payam is a little bigger but still small enough to be nice.

Agree, but I like the stretch between Cha Am and Hua Hin better than Cha Am city beach.

Also very nice and not too far from Bangkok is Dolphin Bay, better sand and water quality than Cha Am or Hua Hin, very laid back.

I would say Chanthaburi, several nice beaches there, not far from Bangkok, get bored of the beaches there then head off to Koh Chang or Rayong way to Koh Samet for a trip to the islands.

Are they coming to Thailand or simply to a convenient tropical country? Sitting on a sweltering hot beach can wear thin after a while.

For convenience I'm thinking Naklua.

They can sit in the shade on the beach and people watch with F&B brought to them, there are people their own age to strike up conversations with. Maybe not same nationality but.. The section I am thinking of has natural shade provided by trees and a breeze.

Yes there is a seedy side but that in itself is interesting if one has never been exposed to it and they will need something to do in the evenings. There are the baht buses to get around town should they want to wander say to Jomtien. This kind of public transport is not available elsewhere, certainly not Phuket.

Ko Samet is not far from Bangkok and one can walk around the whole thing.

If THEY want something a bit more picture postcard with droopy coconut palms then....my brother and his family preferred Ko Tao, said it was quieter. Almost your choice but...

I'd agree. Tong Nai Pan Yai on the north east of the island is my favorite beach in Thailand. Very relaxing with some good restaurants and you can always find a party somewhere.

I know the place, problem is that the beach in front of it at that end of the beach has completely disappeared.

Price should not be more than THB 2,000/night, right now probably closer to THB 1,500.

It was several years back so the disappeared beach may well be.

Also option to stay in the many hotels in Cha Am and travel to a nearby beach when they want.
Only reason, I suggested Cha Am area was it's ease of access from Bangers and when compared to Hua Hin much cheaper.

Have fun Albert. You'll find something to be sure. No scarcity of beaches in Thailand.

Chantaburi has nice beaches if you stay away from the water. Most of the beaches there are a bit muddy form what I have seen. Peaceful places to sit and have lunch though. I would guess the south has much better beaches with clear water if you like swimming, etc. What's that small beach near the naval yard run by the navy in Rayong? It's good for day trips with family. Nice food service right there on the beach, too and Thai prices.

Some beautiful beaches there, you can do a 4 beach tour and they stop for a nice snorkelling session too in the clear blue waters.

i spent last Xmas down there, beautiful.... Easy to get to KPG from there too.

If they come all the way over make sure you take them down there. They will have picture postcard photos to take back and reminisce over

Definitely true - but Dolphin Bay really is quite nice and still within an easy driving distance from Bangkok.

Only about 30 minutes from Hua Hin but the water quality is a whole lot better.

I would have to agree with you. Too many nice sunsets and plenty of beer.
