This thread gives the impression that the ER is out in the boonies, it's not. However you do need transportation to get to the town center. It is located in an area called Nong Sam Rong, which is a suburb of Udon Thani city. ER is next door to another resort, BB Resort and the Army Golf Course (9 holes). There is a Swedish restaurant nearby and an American restaurant, TJ's, which is one of the best farang restaurants in town.

Most of the old scroats around here are well past their useby date as far as eating potential goes, so your safe Andy.

I do not understand why anyone would go to this place it is like a prison. This is what happened to me last 2 weeks ago and i am a happy married man.I ahve posted this on trip advisor under review.I have also met 2 men over 65 that have been assaulted by this resort owner

I booked a month at the Englishmans Retreat to use the gym and pool for my injured shoulder. What a mistake. The most unfriendly intimidating place I have ever stayed! I am 56 and my thai wife is 50.My wife was scared the first morning when she an I said good morning to 2 of the guests but got no reply. On the third night they had a quiz which was ok but the husband and wife whose team I was in were so rude and it was obvious they did not want us there esp when I made a joke and this 50 + farang woman said she would like to smack me in the face ?!
Then they had a party for birthday or wedding or something and took over the bar and started drinking in the afternoon .I tried to sit by the bar but was told every time I went to sit that the chair was occupied so I went and sat on the steps to wait for my wife to go out for a meal. The owner Glyn told me I could join if I wanted but I already knew I was not wanted. When my wife came some of the Thai girls asked her to join them I said to my wife no they do not like us or want us so get changed and we will go out. One of the Thai girls started saying something not polite so I made a sign to zip it and we went to get changed.
When we walked through the bar to go out we were attacked by the owner and some of his guests. Glyn the owner had me by the throat against the wall while is friend punched me in the head they said I told a Thai girl to f**k off which I have never done to a lady in my life. They were like pack animals all wanting to get a bit of me. My poor wife was terrified and even now says she cannot believe farangs act this way .I got out of the door but they came up the street after me still trying to punch me .This went on for about 2 hundred metres and while this was going on my wife was shoved against a wall then went to our room and threw the cases etc over the back wall found a thai guy in a pick up to take her home. These guys threatened to kill me and my wife if I reported this on this website or an any review website. these men were over 6 ft while I am 5ft 7 and 56 yrs old .Glyns wife said sorry to my wife and said he is crazy and like this all the time and was upset with some other guests earlier that day.He told me he wanted to smash my teeth down my throat and rip my eyes out.
The resort is in 2 halves .One half for tourists about 10 or more rooms and the other for long term residents who stay for years .All the bad reviews of this resort are from tourists and all the good reviews from his friends so they give a distorted view. Soon as someone writes a bad review (which glyn always answers) his friends write a glowing list of reviews probably the best reviews I have ever seen for a resort..If you go there be careful These people are evil. Read the bad reviews in trip advisor and ignore his friends reviews. I was the only guest no other customers .A few came but only stayed 1 day as it is not a nice place .The owner will say lots of bad things about me as he always does to anyone who complains as you can read but I am a good person and so is my wife. The worst place I have ever stayed in any country and a antique 14 inch tv with a bad picture and a good hour from the city by songtawe as I tried it one day. Beer is 80 baht (40baht outside in thai restaurant) and most food is 100 baht (30 baht in outside restaurant) A lot better rooms at a cheap price in the city.
Has anyone else had any problems with this guy ?

not sure if i can post a link on here but work a look if you google englishmans retreat facebook reviews.I know a lot of what the guy says is true except his wife seemed ok to me
remember most of the fatastic reviews he has are from his friends not guests

    Which city? Nong Khai?

While I'm sorry you had a shitty time there, you can walk from there to the 'city centre' in less than an hour.

she would like to smack me in the face ?
Luckily it was the Englishman's resort.
If it was the Australian's resort she would have smashed yr face she would and knawered yr balls off.
if it was the German's resort the woulds bury you in the cellar an fvck you for ten years.

I suspect the aggrieved's social skills, or lack of them, are at the root of this.

I wonder what nationality he is?

Clearly, the locals wanted to have nothing to do with him and I suspect his gaucherie in insulting one of their wives didn't help his lost cause.

Anyone whingeing about a few baht difference in tariffs to the extent that he does must indicate a certain meanness of spirit that I would certainly find unattractive.

On balance, I suspect the chap had it coming.
