    Suggestions- 1 month in Thailand (Nov-Dec 2011)

I went to Thailand 2 years ago, and absolutely loved it. I was there for 19 days. (9 days I was on a tour, 10 days I was on my own.) During the tour we went to lots of Wats, Kanchanaburi, and Chiang Mai. During the time on my own, I mostly hiked around Bangkok. I stayed at Sacha's Hotel Uno (Sukhumvit Soi 19), and really liked that hotel. With the sky train and subway at the end of the block, it was very convenient.

What should I do on this year's trip? I'll be there for a month, from mid-November to mid-December.

I have a couple of friends who want to take me down to Pattaya for a few days, and I plan to do the usual stuff plus some go kart racing there. I contacted one of the guides/ friends from my previous trip to arrange a trip down to Phuket for a couple of days (including a junk boat cruise), and probably back up to Chiang Mai/ Chiang Rai to visit a couple of old favorite spots. That part might take a week. So, aside from those 7-10 days, I have the rest of the month available.

So, with that info... What would you suggest for places to stay and things to do? I'm not opposed to staying somewhere else in the city, or moving around during the trip. In fact, I don't even need to stay in BKK- I'm more than willing to spend time in other cities, etc. if it is easy for me to get there. I don't need a high end hotel, just someplace clean and secure. I'd like to attend some kind of sporting event, even if it is just some Muay Thai. I'm very flexible, so I'm open to just about anything.

I can't wait to get back to Thailand... What a great place!

Spend more than a couple of days on Phuket - maybe 4 or 5 - lot's of good beaches there (other than Patong) and a nice little island to tour around (I suggest a car rental rather than use a scooter or taxi/tuktuks). Take a couple of days on Koh Phi Phi as an adjacent tour, too.

    Forget the guide

    Forget the karts

Forget puke-keet unless you want to swim and you can do that Ko Larn off Pattaya

    Chiang Mai/ Chiang Rai: shitholes

No airplanes, take a bus wherever you go

Bangkok and Pattaya, the rest is crap

If and when you get tired of Thai Hos head over to Phills and have a go at some nice girls

    junk boat cruise, forget it

    hope that helps

it really depends who you are and what you like.

If you want a western experience, just follow the advises here.

If you want a more local experience, the best is to have a Thai friend, check the local Thai forums (Pantip a good start) and read the reviews. That's what we do with my wife. Never really been disappointed, it's usually nicer, quieter and much cheaper (better value for money) than the place where westerners go. Of course you won't meet many westerners. The night life ... there isn't much of night life unless you like thai karaoke.

The biggest drawback for me is the food, usually it's only very local thai food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So I usually pack a big bag of cereal and a couple of small bricks of long life milk, that helps me start the day until I get used to the rice soup for breakfast.

We discovered a lot of nice places, far from the usual tourist places. If you can survive without westerners, I really recommend this way of discovering Thailand

    Thanks for the input.

The first time I was there, I guess you could say I did "touristy" stuff during the tour. During the 10 days I was alone, I enjoyed just hiking around the city and meeting people. I wasn't looking for westerners, but I was happy to meet whoever came along. I met some nice locals (who I plan to see again), enjoyed seeing some sights off the beaten track, etc.

This trip will be a little more relaxed, with more spare time being left on the schedule than the first trip. I guess "local" stuff is more of my interest this time- just seeing what I can find, and enjoying time away from home.

Hotels are probably my biggest interest on this trip. I might treat myself to a really nice room in one of the high-rise hotels for a weekend, but for the rest of the time, I'd be plenty happy at a location like Sacha's Hotel Uno (Sukhumvit Soi 19). Any recommendations there?
