Hi I am a British guy resident in Thailand. I have a five year Thai driving licence and wondered if I could I hire a car in the UK with it. I haven't got a british driving licence..
Anyone ever done this?
Any feedback would be great...

As far as I know you'd have to go to Phuket and get an International Drivers License. Valid in any country other than Thailand.
and it would appear you have to be under 65! Been turned down on the grounds of being too old myself.
I'm pretty sure if you don't have a visa and work permit to boot, you need to present your name on a yellow book for where you live OR you can get a letter from your Embassy. This is just to confirm your address.
I too have been looking at this as heading back to UK next month and intend hiring car using Thai license, my understanding is - and I may be wrong, is that as long as the license is in English its acceptable, no need for an International license.
The driving permits they issue out of Phucket are worthless - every where apart from Thailand!
If you find out different please post......
thai licenses are in thai, you will need an officially certified translation.
a lawyer or notary office with translation services can do that.
i asked about this in the uk last year at a car rental company, when i showed them a thai license they told me a translation was necessary.
I have hired cars in UK using a Thai licence. Enterprise is the company I usually use at airports and they have no problems with the Thai one. It is actually easier than using a British licence if you don't have both parts of the British one with you. No phone calls to Swansea which costs around 8 quid.
I thought that a UK National could not drive in the UK on an International licence?
Why not get the legal one from the Department of Transportation. Located near Mochit BTS. Bring in your Thai License and pay 505 baht and you are issued with an international license with a one year validity. Its super easy.
In fact in October I renewed my old 5 year Thai license and got the international one. You need a photo for it.
its is possible. They used to have a book where they looked to see if even you Thai license was valid. But that was for the Thai script one. Unless you live in Nakorn Nowhere and are broke why not take the easy way.
you can then go online and get the best rates without a worry, rather than be declined and end up with walk up price. I just feel for you in UK rental prices. I got a Camry the last time home with a 3.0 v6 that still got over 30 miles to the gallon on the highways at 75 miles an hour. 185 a week or what 26 bucks a day with unlimited milage. GPS as well.
just looked at my photocard license, yes its in thai and english. The new licenses are in English, are these acceptable?
i would think these would be acceptable.
If I had a car rental business in the UK and someone strode in with a Thai license..............
