    In the Port of Amsterdam.......

Unfortunately I have to make an urgent trip back to the UK to spent probably the last time I will have with my mother.

To enable me to fly into Cardiff I have to travel via Amsterdam (at ridiculous cost). Anyway, due to flight availability I have to spend a day in Amsterdam on the way back. I've been 3 times before but not for many years.

What are the best things to go photograph / visit, I know some obvious ones like the Skinny Bridge and the huge plastic cock outside one of the sex shops, but does anyone have any other ideas that may not be so obvious.

People. You meet real characters in Amsterdam.

Bicycle too as KW says. Lot of them in Amsterdam. And probably the best way to visit the city.

And the obvious, people on bike

Sad to hear about your mother. Always hard when we lose a parent.

Was going to suggest the Maritime Museum but their website says it's closed for renovation.

A wander around the Plantage aan het Water (Gardens on the Water) is well worth the the effort. Lot's of photo ops.

Forget Anne Franks house it's a tourist trap and really not much to see.
The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands and has all the old paintings and all the plunder from oversees. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam - Museum of Art and History The Scheepvaart museum Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam is the national maritime museum and is really cool as it has a lot of the history of Amsterdam there. Take a rondvaart canal boat trip and get a view and a tour of the city from a different perspective. Or one of my favorites take your camera and wander around the Jordaan one of the most picturesque and least touristy areas, read up a bit on the history of the place and lose yourself for hours. Hoern is only a short train trip, an old fishing village, slighty touristy, but scenic in good weather

Sorry to hear of the trouble, hope it works out, with minimum pain on both sides.

Between you, me and a few others here I think we have invested enough to own that company outright.

Have a safe trip mate and I hope you have a nice time with your mum.

    God bless!

I think the tours are early morning and you only get a couple of tasters, they're not daft.

If you're in need of a good meal there's a great irish pub called the Tara, really nice place good food and beer. It's hard to find good food at an affordable price in the city centre. It's on a main street called Rokin which runs south from Dam square, the pub is halfway down on the left. there's a department store at the end called V&D (Vroom and Dressman) which has an excellent food hall with fresh cooked steaks, fish, chicken, you name it, it's got it and well they don't say 'cheap' in Holland, but it's ein goode koop. There's also a really good snooker and pool hall on Rokin, about 30 metres down on the right from Dam square, if doing hookers and smoking blow gets a little too much for you, or if you just want to get out of the crowds, and you need to chill out for a few hours and get your head back together.
