    Shipping Goods

This seems the best place to ask this .
Some of you must surely have shipped boxes of your possessions from the UK to your home in Thailand .
Does anyone have recommendations for shipping some boxes of stuff - clothing , shoes , just personal stuff - from the UK to Thailand ? It looks a very expensive business and then what happens at the Thai end ? Do you get walloped again for bringing in your own stuff ? Not even new stuff . Maybe work tools also .

Or is it really not worth any of the hassle and expense ?

Missy has some very nice clothing in England .
But even so .... how often are you going to be wearing a Superdry jacket in Korat ?

    Well --- just for estimating --- I was thinking of a box ( there would be a few ) 18" x 18" x 24" . 15kg ?
This seems to be a standard large shipping box .

There are plenty of companies but I was looking if anyone can recommend any particular Company .

And importantly ....... is it worth the cost and the bother ?

    Probably 6 boxes .
    Standard Large boxes .

And does the cost and any Thai hassle make it fruitless ?

Missy ...... has lost her work because of Covid ....... doesn't see her many friends and has got so used to the solitude she's feeling very inclined to call an end to her time in the UK and just go home and grow her vegetables .
When she looks in her cupboard there's a lot of money on all those coat hangers but its really an emotional thing .
How many times ... in Korat ..... will she wear this lovely black wool heavy coat with its false fur collar ?

Well more that a couple of 30Kg suit cases.

Tell her to be brutal and dial down the weight and volume so you can squeeze it into 2x 30Kgs allowances (or book a set on the left side as you board), wear as much as you can, you'll look great in florals Wasp, cram the hand luggage and sell the rest on

Good thoughts here . I'm not planning to go with her so she's down to one Allowance .
You're right though ..... get a lot into one 30kg bag . Plus some hand Luggage .
Of course she can't go anywhere yet . Not paying for 2 weeks in solitude in a Bangkok Hotel !!

I still wouldn't mind finding a recommendation for a Shipper . Especially if they ship Door to Door and you don't have to go to Bann Lamung to sign papers for a shipment !!!

Mrs. Wasp is probably much better off selling winter clothing especially a coat with a fur collar. That fur won’t last a hot minute in Thailand. Fur has to be put in cold storage in humid climates. Will be a double costly mistake to both ship it and lose it!

Also, good shoes decay in the humidity. If she isn’t wearing these things a couple of times a year, they fall apart.

Check airline prices for extra checked bags and extra bags/boxes going cargo. Also, prices for how much weight one can carry on economy vs. business class. Sometimes it works out to fly business.

I know that in Singapore and Malaysia there are companies that specialise in sending 'Balik Bayan' boxes back the the Philippines for the Filipinos working there - much cheaper than than other ways - maybe a quick search to see if that's available near you . . . and then ask if they do or know someone who does Thailand.

Winter clothes in Korat . . . hmmm

I have sent items as "unaccompanied baggage" from Oz several times. $1.80 per kg last year. Goods are sent in alignment with your flight. The consolidator can send door to door for a modest fee. They will need your passport for clearance. Customs and duties can be variable on the day...

    Wasp,
I would look into paying overage on Luggage when you fly. Doesn't sound like a lot. Buy Vaccum bags and suck it all down nice and flat. I muled over loads of items in suitcases and just paid $100 or so for the extra bag.

I agree with Misskit however you need to understand you and yours wifes expectations. I did a cargo container and it was the best thing I ever did.

Decades ago I shipped my belongings from UK to Singapore - nothing was urgent, so it got shipped by sea in literal tea chests. Was not that expensive.

While I have not shipped to Thailand, I have an itchy feeling that you are allowed to ship personal effects without import tax for only so many months after you have relocated.

After that time import duty on clothes is very, very high (40% IIRC).

Couldn't agree more. We all gather way too much stuff and eventually best to dump most of it.

Yeah - especially 'smart' clothing for 'special occasions' in the Thailand boonies.

Then at some point you realise you haven't worn it for over a decade and would be happy to never wear it again.

Better offloaded to a charity shop in the west.

The key here I think is in the language. Bringing not sending. If you have a few extra suitcases and pay the addition luggage charge then you can put them on a trolley and walk through customs. If you "send" then separately then you will probably get stung with at least 30% duty and VAT.

Many years ago I needed a suit for a job interview so being naive I asked a family member to ship me one of my suits. The appraised duty was more than the value of the suit.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

Some great suggestions Wasp. I wholeheartedly agree about clothing. Even with a cargo container we brought very little clothing and nothing for winter. I haven't put on a jacket here since I landed. I think I had 2 and gave them both to my BIL in BKK. My wife brought over a few sweaters but that was it. What we routinely bring back from the states clothing wise are Levi's and tennis trainer type shoes as they are usually 65% to 75% cheaper than here for ASICS or Adidas. We also bring back top quality bedding as nothing is better than soft cotton bed sheets.

True that Norts. I guess it would all depend on what that "Stuff" was and of course for some the sentimental value. Books, some generic wall hangings, Records, old electronic stuff, heavy winter clothing, kitchen appliances etc we donated to the Salvation Army and got a nice little tax donation .

The import rule for a married couple (one being a Thai national) is you can bring up to one 40ft container of what they have classified as "Personal Household belongings". No guns, no automotive and no alcohol. To avoid import tax the Thai person has to have been out of Thailand for at least 2 years.

This all became interesting comment . Thank you .

Though I wish people wouldn't dismiss Korat as " the boonies " .
I remember my first trek out there and I was indeed expecting ' the boonies ' .
On the bus ...... looking out at rice fields , empty fields , rice fields , toilet stop , rice fields , temple , concrete flyover , temple , rice fields , some hills , many fruit stalls , temple , rice fields .......

    Not looking good .

Then entering Korat ---- wide concrete roads , pedestrian bridges , markets ... then shopping malls bigger than I'm used to in UK !
    Wendy's Burgers , Pizza Huts , Burger King .
Now I don't spend my life in Burger King but when you occasionally get a queasy stomach its nice to know you can settle it with a Burger , Chips and a Salad .
More traffic , Tesco !!! McDonalds , KFC , some nice-looking bars , good Hotels , big clean Hospitals , signs to Golf Course , Gold shops , Big C , Global House , food markets , VERY busy Bus Station , Taxis , HomePro ...... !!!!

    Korat --- is not ' the boonies ' .

    It's a province.

It's possible to live in Korat and be in an absolute textbook example of 'the Thailand boonies'.

    But there's a KFC? Really?

    Sorry, but...

Apparently 'boon docks' comes originally from the Tagalog word for 'mountain'.

    I didn't know that.

    " Sorry but .... " what ????

You don't have to go far from Chiang Mai to be in ' the boonies ' .
But Chiang Mai would not be called ' the boonies '.

When you make a false description - better to say so or just say no more .

You seem to be getting confused between the terms 'Korat' and 'Korat CITY'.

If 'boonies' means not having a Big C, McDonald's or KFC then the whole of Thailand is a bustling, sophisticated metropolis.

    Enjoy.

We just brought a 6 m3 box using seven seas shipping, USD 3,400 door to door, no duty, vat. They h smaller boxes and luggage rates as well.
No cheap, bu less than a few extra months of maintaining a stateside home and health insurance. We did not qualify for the returning Thai nationals as my wife did not return with me to close out our US life but it did not matter in the end.
