Phuket Holiday Ends in Tragedy as Helmetless British Man Crashes Motorcycle

Phuket Holiday Ends in Tragedy as Helmetless British Man Crashes Motorcycle

PHUKET: A British man has been killed in a motorcycle crash in the Kamala area of Phuket, north of Patong, on Phuket's west coast.

A motorcycle being ridden by Jason Paul Richards, 40, hit the pavement near the FantaSea show as he headed back towards central Kamala village about 12.30am on Tuesday.

Mr Richards died later, in Patong Hospital. He was not wearing a helmet.

Friends told police they had been with Mr Richards earlier at a bar not far away. He had been staying on Phuket for about three months.

Phuket's British honorary consul, Mr Martin Carpenter, said today that Mr Richards' family had been notified.

Phuketwan supports Mothers or Motorcycles (MoM), an action group that supports the 100 percent helmet campaign and aims for improved road safety.

Poor guy. Very sad to think he may be alive if he'd worn a lid.

He was a decent guy. I knew him for a short while as he was with the wife's sister for many years. Amazingly enough he visited a friend in a coma for many days in the hospital in Phuket for exactly the same thing in October. I guess that was not enough to convince him to wear a proper helmet and to not go zipping around on his motor bike drunk.

The village will certainly not be the same as he was a unique individual.

Best wishes to his family as I know they have been concerned with his well being for a while now.

Easy to say but unless you were there to witness the event, it's not a fair statement to make.

For all we know he could have been shunted off the road by some koont in a Fortuner.

Nothing is what is seems in Thailand.

I don't understand why people who wouldn't dream of not donning a helmet in the UK, (and not simply because it is is compulsory), are blase about wearing one in Thailand.

Guys should check that their wives are not taking their kids on the back of motor bike taxis with no helmets.

LB is likely referring to the 'helmetless' citation in the headline, Socal.

Not many people do actually plan on crashing, but they still wear helmets and protective clothing.

Whenever I am hiring a bike down the islands or up North in the jungles and I see another customer renting at the same time as me I always make a point of stressing them to wear a lid.
You may think I am a little bit kookie for doing it, but if just 1 of them listened and it saved their life, then it was worth it. If they ignore it, then fine. I don't push it down there throats, just a bit of friendly advice that takes 10 seconds.
Case in point. Was in Phuket about 7 or 8 years back and some French dude was hiring. I said make sure you wear your helmet and be careful about sand on the road. Bumped in to him at the airport a week later with a sling and fuck-off bandage on his head.

    RIP Jason.

I hope you went up to him and said 'I told you so' , pointed at his head injury and gave him a big grin.

Funny enough. He came up to me and said "you told me so" with a wry grin.

To be serious though. Please wear a lid, no matter how far or where you are going.

It's not just about wearing a lid, it's about wearing a proper lid, most of the lids people wear in Thailand will offer you little more protection than a baseball cap.

Helmets do NOT save your life in a head on crash. Research and the latest data shows this to be a myth. Many jurisdictions are now repealing helmet legislation. If you crash and smack your head up against a tree for example, your head stops but your brain does not. Result; your brain is mush inside what is suggested would be your perfectly preserved cranium. Not to mention possibly a broken neck. I have been a motorcyclist (Biker) all my conciderable life and prefer to see and hear what is around me. I have friends who are disabled, because they wore a helmet. Anyway! Have you looked at what they call a helmet in this country? Don't make me laugh!

    The Phuket News - Thursday, 24th Nov 2011 11:26
PHUKET: A British expat died last night (Wednesday) after crashing his motorcycle near Phuket Fantasea in Kamala.

Jason Richards, 40, was killed in a motorcycle accident while riding home last night.
Jason Richards, 40, was riding home from The Aussie Bar in Kamala when the crash occurred.
In a cruel twist of fate, Mr Richards was a good friend of Steve ‘Tommo’ Thomas, the former British Royal Marine who is recovering in hospital in Wales after being involved in a motorbike accident in Phuket in September. The two men went through school together.
Mr Richards had been living in Udon Thani, in Thailand’s northeast, for the past three years, and came to Phuket only when he learned of Tommo’s accident after reading it in the news.

Helments are not likely going to save your life in a serious head on crash and nobody has ever claimed that they would. They can however save you from head injuries and maybe save your life or prevent you from being a vegetable if you have a minor accident and just hit the road with your head or something similar. Many people have been seriously injured in minor bike accidents because an unprotected head does not do well hitting concrete even at very low speed.

What jurisdictions have repealed helmet legislation?? Have never heard of even one....In most Western countries they would get their ass sued off the first time someone was seriously injured or killed because of such a regressive act. This is the same kind of BS argument that suggests that "speed does not Kill" or "smoking is not really bad for your health...I know a guy who lived to 96 and he smoked all his life" or "seatbelts and air bags are not necessary" etc etc.......and yes the cheap helmets they sell in corner stores acround Thailand are not much better than a baseball cap....but you can buy a good one if your not a typical cheap farang with denial problems... which a great many seem to be....
