TRAT : Four inmates were killed and 16 others seriously injured after two sets of convicts fought a pitched battle in Trat prison yesterday.
The clash between evacuated prisoners from flood-hit Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani and Trat inmates broke out around 3pm.
The brawl ended two hours later after a combined team of soldiers, police and defence volunteers were called in to control the situation. Four inmates died during the fighting, while 16 seriously wounded inmates were taken to Trat Provincial Hospital, said Monthon Srikrajib, the head of Trat prison.
Around 50 to 60 inmates who sustained minor injures were being treated in the prison's infirmary.
Other prisoners who witnessed the clash said the fighting erupted when the Trat inmates were preparing to take a shower together.
The prisoners from Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani mistakenly thought the other inmates were trying to stop them from using the shower facilities, the witnesses said.
