Shocking scenes as passers by ignore dying toddler in China

CCTV footage shows Yue Yuem lying injured after she was run over by a van in Foshan city, Guangdong, China. Picture: Source: Supplied

WARNING: The stills from this video may offend - and they should. They show a two-year-old run over twice and left for dead as nearly 20 passers-by ignore the child lying prone on the street.

Chinese toddler Yueyue, 2, was dawdling up a quiet lane in Guangdong Province when she was hit by a white van. The driver halts, and then continues on his way, crushing her for a second time.
Even more shockingly, the youngster - clearly suffering life-threatening injuries and in need of urgent assistance - is callously ignored by the next 18 passers-by in the city of Foshan.

Some passers-by, including pedestrians, cyclists and even a mother, even alter their course to avoid the stricken toddler, who lies there helpless bleeding to death.
Yueyue is later struck for a second time, by a larger van, and again is completely ignored.
Eventually a woman comes to little Yueyue's aid, calling for help and raising the alarm of the child's mum before she was taken to hospital.
The tot is in critical condition with major head injuries and is breathing with the aid of a ventilator, the Daily Telegraph reports.

On the Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo users called the incident "the shame of the Chinese people". Picture: Supplied

The incident has left millions around China and the world shocked, prompting the child's stunned father to lash out on national television.
"What’s up with people these days? They make so many excuses to turn a blind eye," he said.
"The society is so indifferent, so heartless.
"I don’t have any thoughts now, I just hope my child will wake up and call me Dad again."
"‘The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

Awful , heartless ,robotic scum people -
I must try harder not to buy stuff made in China ,
all most of them care about is money
what hope is there for animal welfare when they treat children like this .

''It is only the nineteenth passer-by, a 58-year-old street cleaner called Chen Xianmei, who drops her bag of rubbish and rushes to the bleeding child, attempting to scoop up her up, but finding her floppy and lifeless.
Mrs Chen, who is only 4ft 7in tall, then calls for the girl’s mother who comes rushing into view, taking up her child in her arms, who is now in intensive care in the military hospital in the city of Guangzhou. ''

should give her a pension for life and name and shame the others

Anyone who has any dealings with the Chinese will not be surprised by this.

What is it with Asians being so heartless and indifferent to their fellow human beings?

Terrible situation but hopefully she will recover. What was a 2 year old toddler doing roaming around the streets in the first place. The parents should be reprimanded as well as the heartless bastards that could walk past the injured little lady.

Fraking sick. Chinese are just selfish pigs. only think of themselves. That white van driver, what was it for him, knock a kid over day? Must of been blind.

Hope you make it little girl. And grow up and resent your fellow Chinese citizens.

Having a 2 year old myself this is horrible to try and comprehend how people could act like that.

    From the BBC report:

    Scam fears

Some said they understood the dilemma for the passers-by - that if they helped out they might incur costs or be blamed for the accident.

The China Daily reported incidents in January in which elderly men who fell in the street were left alone because people did not want to get involved.

It cited an earlier case in which a man, Peng Yu, who helped an injured elderly lady to hospital was then found by a court to be liable for some of her medical costs.

Another case - in which an elderly woman believed to have fallen in the road accused a man, Xu Yunhe, who stopped to help her, of hitting her with his car - also attracted considerable attention.

"There's been so many cases where people have been treated unjustly after doing good things," one comment said.

Tot, 2, run over twice, and no one helps

By Adrienne Mong, NBC News Correspondent

TRIPOLI – Even from a remote perch in Libya, we heard about the horrific story making waves in China.

Last Thursday, a two-year-old girl crossing a street by herself in the city of Foshan in China’s southern Guangdong Province was hit by a car. The driver paused briefly as the girl lay between the front and rear wheels and then tore off, thumping her now-limp body again.

Soon after, a second vehicle rolled over the girl, with the driver presumably unaware that a body lay on the road. The second driver also did not stop.

As if both these acts were not outrageous enough, 18 more people – on foot, on motorbikes, or on bicycles – passed by the girl, lying inert on the ground, and did nothing. Even a mother with her own child ignored the victim.

(Warning the video is very graphic, but it can seen here from a Chinese broadcast or here from the BBC).

It wasn’t until a female trash collector saw her and proceeded to pick the girl up that she was moved to the side of the road. The trash collector asked passers-by who the girl belonged to, and eventually the mother appeared, distraught, to claim her daughter named Yueyue.

All of this was caught on surveillance cameras. A clip was posted on China’s popular micro blog, Sina Weibo on Sunday, generating a huge outcry as netizens counted the number of people who glanced at the girl and ignored her plight – all in the seven minutes she lay on the road until the Good Samaritan carried her to safety.

The story, which has been a leading headline on all of China’s news sites, touched a nerve in the country, with many decrying the lack of moral standards and general disregard for fellow human beings.

One report quoted the first driver as saying, “If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan."

Some news reports and online discussions made the point that civil behavior is not always rewarded in China. Many people fear they’re being subject to some sort of scam while others remember still a well-known case from 2006, when a man helped a woman who had fallen only to have her accuse him of causing the injury to begin with. She filed a suit against him, in which the judge ruled the man wouldn’t have come to her aid had he not caused the fall.

State-run news agency Xinhua has reported both drivers of the vehicles that ran over the girl have been apprehended by police.

Yueyue, meanwhile, is in critical condition with serious brain injuries, breathing with the help of a ventilator. Her parents are asking eyewitnesses to come forward with any additional information.

The story of Yueyue’s hit-and-run stands in stark contrast to another story that picked up steam online over the weekend.

Last Friday afternoon, a woman fell into a scenic tourist lake in Hangzhou, the capital of the eastern province of Zhejiang. A Western woman who was walking by saw the Chinese woman struggling and quickly jumped into West Lake to save her.

After swimming back to shore, the foreigner dragged her onto the bank. The victim remained conscious and appeared out of danger. Police turned up ten minutes later, and the Western woman left quietly. Several websites reported she was American.

What was notable in this instance was the response of those who read the story online.

In addition to giving the rescuer high praise (“That American girl is great, she has a beautiful character”), people also made unfavorable comparisons to Chinese behavior:

“According to Chinese laws and regulations, if she hadn’t pushed the girl into the water, why ever would she save her?”

Thanks to China Digital Times for the translations.

Adrienne Mong is NBC’s Beijing correspondent. She is on assignment in Libya.

Only one of MANY reasons why I wouldn't piss on the average Chinese pseudohuman if he or she were on fire. They are right up there with Islamofucks in terms of compassion. (or LACK of it)

I wouldnt condemn all Chinese they are not all the same as we are not all the same. Scams as reported would make most sceptical,in some countries Western included some scammers will throw themselves in front of a car so they can get compensation or sue the driver.

It is terrible though when we become so fearful of this that we ignore the obvious distress of an innocent child such as this.In todays society we are advised to mind our own business to escape involvement. In Australia good samaritans who have gone to help someone getting bashed are told to be wary. There are callous people in every society,it is just more prevalent in some.My thoughts are for the little girl hopefully she will survive.

The problem , apart from the fact that most Chinese are heartless, cold, soulless, greedy selfish cunts, is that despit Boon Mees fantasy relating communism and medicine there is no socialized medicine in China, so whoever took her to the hospital or for treatment would be held responsible for payment.
This is shocking and sad. I just hope the little girl recovers, though I doubt she will ever be 100% ok.

The focus of the reports has been the passersby's reaction but I didn't see any mention of either driver being caught. The plates are on CCTV. Surely they should be down the station by now.
