Watergate to be opened to drain runoff : PM - The Nation

    The Nation October 20, 2011 5:03 am

In the latest attempt to alleviate the flood crisis in many provinces, all water gates will be opened to drain the massive runoff from the north.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the public should not panic to see the water levels increase in many of Bangkok water routes.

"The opening of the water gates will make the water levels rise. The move will help us control the volume of runoff from the north. I want the public to understand this and not panic," she said.

She said the new measure would mean that the water runoff will flow into Bangkok, but it should not inundate the roads. Bangkok authorities would have pumping machines to pump the water out to the waterways.

The water would then go to San Saeb, Prawet and Song canals before running to the sea.

The premier was speaking after meeting with the water experts, including Irrigation Department director general Chalit Damrongsak and former Bangkok governor Pijit Rattakul, at the National Flood Relief Centre in Don Mueang Airport.

She said the building of water barriers was still necessary to help slow down the water currents. Some experts have been critical of the building of water barriers, saying these will block the waterways. The strength of the floodwaters has already destroyed barriers at several sites.

Telling the public should not be panic, Yingluck suggested people to move their belongings to the second floor. If their houses are in lowlying areas, people should move their vehicles to higher ground.

Can those three canals, San Saeb, Prawet, and Song really be big enough to handle all that water? Somehow I don't think so.

An emergency decree would have allowed the resources of the army and navy to tackle the job of reinforcing the flood barriers. Asking for volunteers from the public as the main source of manpower was foolhardy. If this government would have had a plan in place much of the loss that has resulted could have been avoided. She will pay with her job after this is over.

    Prison inmates to sandbag airport

About 300 prison inmates will be sent to help soldiers build up the sandbag embankments around Suvarnabhumi airport tomorrow, the Correction Department deputy chief said on Thursday.

Thanis Sriyaphan said he will take 300 well behaved inmates from prisons in Bangkok and surrounding provinces to help put up sandbags around Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan province on Friday.

Earlier, the department sent 500 prisoners to help troops and officials build flood dyes in areas at risk of flooding.

The department deputy chief said none of the inmates selected to do work outside jails ever escaped and each had only a few months left to serve in jail.

All prisons in flood-hit Pathum Thani province were still dry as the floodwater flowed to Khlong 8 canal. As part of precautions, inmate evacuation plans were in place if needed, he said.

Inmates at Khlong Prem Central Prison, Bangkok Special Prison and Central Women Correctional Institute, which are located near Bangkok's Khlong Prem Prachakorn, may have to be moved to the second floor of the prison buildings if the flood enters the area.

Bang Kwang Prison and Nonthaburi Provincial Prison near Nonthaburi pier had adequate flood prevention measures and inmate evacuations would not be necessary, said Mr Thanis.

SoE declaration is not necessary for that - and they are already deployed. Frankly, if any available soldier/sailor/airman is currently cooling their heels instead of being deployed (likewise their equipment), then the responsible commander should be fired.

But she is supplying information from her inner circle of idiots who are there from political contributions, plus her brother who is not a fucking hydrologist. Finally someone of some power whom she believes has said open the floodgates. Sure its going to flood in flood prone areas of BKK but this happens most every year at this time. The residents know how to deal with it.

But this do that, and add to that Pladprasong issuing orders to evacuate twice now, with not a problem one does show she is a very novice politician. Granted she is out there on the ground doing her best in very fashionable clothes.

My area is Don Muang and the main street is Song Prapha, not a drop of water one but a huge traffic jam, why? People at every hardware shop buying everything they could. Yet in a 5 by 5 kilometer range around my house there is no water. It has been warm and mostly clear. People are even watering their plants.

Yes i still have a fear it will invade around me. Yes I did stock up on food for ten days.

But the end result is this government has bungled this to the max. They knew two months ago this was going to come if the rains did not stop. But it was more important to change around people in political power to make PT more powerful. But who did they fuck. They same people who voted them in. Check out the polls on how the government helped the problem and how the Army, and military did. Contrary to Calgary' belief the thing would have been a thousand times worse without them.

Not blowing any trumpets, but drive by if you can a scene where a dike or leavy is being reinforced you will see military. Not the fcuking brass they dont give a shit, but the had core working guys.

In my area of north BKK it is more than evident.

The main forces of the army are not being utilized because Khun Poo is afraid of a coup. Big Bro sez do it yourself nong sau, don't risk getting the army involved.

The army has a proper chain of command, which is sorely missing from the government. The PM only has a few months experience in politics, no wonder she's clueless.

Yet, the military doesn't take it's orders from the government.
