With a surname 'Vida' he obviously originates from Italy. Now go bash the Italians and leave the poms out of it.Quote:

hope you can enlighten us into the ins and outs of it all.
^He should be f**cking grateful, There was a lady from liverpool on one of the 'brits in the shit' series who was serving 2 years for stealing a bottle sun tan lotion. in 18 months she had lost most of her heath, quite possibly from scurvy.
Now its all over, it would be nice if you could spill the beens on what been happening the last few months. Its not often someone we get to hear about think kind of stuff warts and all

I am not exactly sure how much money was given to him. His best mate is a Top Barrister here in Melbourne Australia and he alone donated 50,000's worth of his time to helping my brother. I know that he had 20,000 Bart to last him in prision which he delightfully used to feather his own nest in prision.
Basically my brother is not all there mentally, and we had to submit the documents to the court to support this. Then we also had to submit a family impact statement to explain how it would effect my family had he been imprisioned for the entire time of 5 years. The lawyer and my mother refused to bail him out originally (which was an option) because a) they knew he would reoffend and b) because as they told the judge, he needed to be punished for the crime he commited. This later turned out to be the best thing they could have done because the judge looked very highly upon this. Then they had to pay $1500au to pay his deportation fees, visa fee and airfare out of the country. There was a lot of other monies paid as well throughout that time i know- but i dont have a figure.
Whist the official statement was he snatched the ring to PROPOSE to the g/f, he actually did it to bail out the GF from jail.. she was in there for having drugs.. funny thing was, she never visited him once whilst he was in jail... go figure!
The Lawyer at my families request asked the judge to blacklist him for Thailand forever. The judge had asked if this was really what we wanted, and as they explained my brothers mental state and his likelyhood to reoffend, they granted our wishes!!!
The reason he is better off here is because he lives in "fairyland" and really doesnt get the consequences of his actions. Hes 34 but mentally he's like 15. He really needs full time help but he refuses it. Atleast now my mum knows he's safe and he can get the help he so badly needs...
BTW whoever said VIDA was italian.. its ACTUALLY Hungarian and my grandfather worked with the ALLIES before coming to settle here in Australia. My brother and the rest of my family (excluding my mother who is german) are Australian and i don't appreciate the inferences. It doesnt matter what country a person is from because there is always one person who can be a fuckhead.. regardless of nationality!
and to those who have followed the story, mum finally did get all her documents to be able to safely travel overseas!!!! however he was released and deported before she could use it LOL!
Any other questions and im happy to answer them (if i knoow the answer!!)
oh! and the aussie lawyer had travelled over to thailand originally to organise a thai lawyer for my brother (as he travels to thailand every 3 months on holidays). He liased with the thai lawyer on my parents behalf and worked with him on all negociations! :)
Your mother is wise.Quote:

The nature of the crime suggested a severe lack of common sense. a lot of these gold shops hire armed off duty policemen to guard them, so stealing form them is a very high risk occupation.Quote:

As you said, it probably helped a long way in getting the judge 'on side'; but will have sent a very strong message all involved that you wen't interested in doing the thai thing and bribing him out of this.
I was quite curious how an earth he could be ungrateful, given you have done him a huge favour, but the issues he has explain that and why you have taken it so well. without your money to feather his nest in prison, and your help in the courts, he would have done serious jail time and thai jail without an external source of extra money is a place to rot and quite possibly die from neglect.
However it does sound like your next challenge is going to be keeping him australia, there are lots of other SEA countries he can goto that are a lot less pleasant than thailand.
Thankyou for the update and best of luck with the future
thanks for the update, it seems as if your aussie lawyer managed to liase successfully with the thai side of things, something i did not think possible when you first posted about it.
no surprise that the girlfriend abandoned him, but if he was in jail, he was not able to give her money, so why on earth should she waste her time and money on going to visit him.
i do find it strange though that a top melbourne barrister is best mates with a mentally deficient fairyland inhabiting man with criminal tendencies.
anyway, hopefully being back with the family again will help to keep him on the rails.
Cheers for the update. Always interesting to find out more.
best of luck mate.
Taxexile- they met through his brother whos known my brother for like 15 years. It's friend loyalty- although i don't understand why.
The reason i say he is ungreatful, is because he learnt nothing from the experience! He stepped off the plane and started accusing everyone of 'not knowing what he went through' and had the attitude like we owed him! He was also angry about being in jail, saying it was everyone elses fault because they didn't bail out the druggie gf so he was 'forced' to steal.
At the end of the day, being back here in aus is less stressful for my mother. She loves him to pieces and is always worried about him because of his mental issues. We are very VERY lucky that my brother did infact HAVE this friend who was the barrister otherwise he would have end up dead in cambodia (apparently the first thai lawyer that was located in Thailand, was someone was going to extort money off us and kill him.. fun much?)
If he goes back overseas, he will be disowned.
i think you need to hide his passport !!!
Lots of people like that, always play the victim card instead of owning up to their own actions. I really don't know if there is any help for these folks in the long run, even life experience just reinforces their beliefs more than enlightens them.Quote:
