maybe its because the western justice and prison system is so soft that people think its ok, its no big deal, its a trivial matter to rob, to take what is not yours.
this experience, unpleasant as it is will focus his mind, give him time to reflect on his behaviour and on the inner demons that drove him to commit this futile act and he will undoubtedly emerge from this a better person.
In Thai terms, if one finds oneself in the monkey house it is most likely because your karma has led you there and therefore, ultimately, you are responsible. Having resources to make life more comfortable helps otherwise the fulll rigour of a medieval regime will prevail. You could apply for bail, which most Thai with money, land or connections get, and this should be your first priority.

Nope nothing yet - still waiting for progress. The Lawyer is still over there in Thailand working with a Thai lawyer but because of his noteriety (however its spelt!) its made it much harder!! atleast now he has some money and basic essentials which will help..

As you probably realise by now Thai jails are not comfortable but your lawyer has done the right thing I hope and put a little money in his jail account. This will make it a little more bearable but at the end of the day the Thai authorities do not waste too much money on prisoners and they are often supported by their families.
The motto "Pay early" is a good one, leave it too long and there are more players with their fingers in. This applies as much to a traffic stop as it does to an arrest for theft.
Keep it up, he will need your help in the coming months but for goodness sake sort it BEFORE a verdict is given. Once he goes down you will be thinking about a transfer back to an Aussie prison but there will be no parole in Aus, it will be at the whim of the Thais, and he may well serve 4 - 10 years.
He may once convicted get on to the King's birthday pardon list to clear out the prison but this may not be for a few years. At least it was not drugs, for which there is no King's list.

Hi all - sorry its been a while! He served 3.5 months in jail, and another 2 weeks in IDC. He landed in Australia Friday 06/01 on a suspended sentance of 2.5 years after originally being sentanced to 5years! They deported him and he is blacklisted from Thailand indefinately after recommendations from the lawyer.
He is very VERY lucky, and only because his mate is a Top barrister here in Melbourne Australia did he not end up in Cambodia or worse.. dead. And he is an ungreatful man.. ugh >:(
