The only reason I don't like stuff like this is that it gives the Blue Suede Shoes another excuse to bored us shitless with their fucking faux indignation.

^ I have some. But not pink. Its that two tone green/red silk. I had them tailor made in Soi Pradipat.

Trouble is I am too fat to fit in them.

Up in Mae Hong Son at Khun Yuam (Imperial Japanese Army's base for the campaign against British Burma), there's a museum dedicated to the period. For 10 baht you can tour the place; aside from all the abandoned hardware and other military paraphernalia on display, there are eye-opening photographs and a video presentation that reveal just how "ordinary" the occupation/presence was - Japanese soldiers helping with the harvest and generally mixing happily with the local population. The whole impression is radically different from all the images that we're used to - whether Nanking, the Philippines or, of course, the abuse of Allied prisoners (as well as more numerous Malays and Indians) on the Death Railway and other forced labour projects.

Interpreting history can be tricky and reliance on primary sources is not necessarily a reliable prism.
Photographs are a case in point. The Japanese were keen to promote the notion of peaceful co - existence among Asian states and was often pedalled as a precursor to invasion. The Thai really had little choice in the matter and were occupied in areas which best suited their overall strategy. Photographs of Japanese merrily getting in the harvest for themselves and locals alike were just propaganda. For many Thai starvation and brutal treatment were the reality. Indeed, a significant proportion of Thai assisted the allies but this was quite overshadowed by the condominium govt entered into voluntarily by the Thai with the Japanese. Mountbatten wanted to annex the Southern states in reparation but this didn't suit the American policy. What a pity, eh? Wouldn't have the problems now if Mountbatten had had his way.

The motif (a hooked cross) appears to have first been used in Neolithic Eurasia, perhaps representing the movement of the sun through the sky. To this day it is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. It is a common sight on temples or houses in India or Indonesia. Swastikas also have an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures.
it's the sign of life, and also used by "ancient aliens" worshipers like that odd cult from Canada

Hitler himself believe in a "pure" race coming from "ancient aliens" descendants and use extensively symbols from primitive asian religious culture where "alien civilization" were central. This why those symbols were used, they mean Life as intended by the "creators", that is superior life.
When you see this symbol on ancient monuments and artefacts are they not in the negative ?

Been there have you? Seen them have you? Most are amateur snaps taken by the soldiers themselves - not the Imperial Japanese Army's Photographic Unit. That's quite apart from other evidence available - primary and otherwise. Just because the pics are in black and white doesn't mean the thinking has to be likewise.

I have an interest in WW2 history, and have often asked Thais about that period of time, with the same result usually. If they had heard anything about it, the facts were severely lacking.

The Thai education system is a joke, I have met Thais who are quite switched on who have told me that they didn't believe dinosaurs ever existed, and why was this?

It was because it was drummed into them at school!

probably be worse, judging from other British annexations and divisions

Does anybody remember the furore when a prize was awarded for a hitler costume at an Israeli school?

I can't find a reference for it but am quite sure it was even discussed here on TeakDoor.

Makes me laugh when the press comments along the lines of the kids are "seemingly oblivious" and the punters swallow it.

How could kids research the uniforms and iconography and not come into contact with the history behind it..?

Yes Thais can be stupid but these kids are not that stupid, I remember a similar student day a few years ago with exactly the same Nazi regalia and the national pres were similarly shocked then at the kids 'naivete'...

Wake up ffs, they live in a xenophobic closed culture with nationalistic indoctrination and are inherently racist within their own society, why wouldn't they idolize and emulate a culture that epitomises their own upbringing?

The only problem here is the matter of face, the world may see these pictures and realize what a nasty fascist society Thailand really is, so better to downplay it by reverting to stereotypes and say that Thai kids are just dumb, they don't really understand what they are doing.

    BS

^Neo this is the British Press. It doesn't actually care about the xenophobic undercurrents. They just want pix of girls in jackboots.

The Daily Mail does at least one Adolph story per day. Not long ago they found a semi-detached house that looked like the Fuhrer.

Of course, famously, the Daily Mail endorsed Hitler in the thirties. If you try reminding them of that in their feedback section, they...er...won't publish your comment though.

I'm very surprised top hear about that. I thought Thailand supported the Nazi's during WW2. Thai, Japan and Germany against the Allies.

I'm even sure that the Germans were mentioned in the WW2 museum in Kanchanaburi. Surely there must be someone who knows this stuff.

This is the first I've heard of it.
