Fuhrer furore! Thai student Nazi dress-up day causes outrage
    • Foreign parents and teachers appalled by the costumes
    • Thai teachers 'did not understand' the controversy
    • School asked to put the Holocaust on the curriculum
    By Kerry Mcqueeney

They had been meticulously planning their costumes for quite some time.

The annual summer sports day had a long tradition of fancy dress and, eager to impress, the pupils of Sacred Heart Catholic School kept their outfits under wraps for weeks.

They wanted to surprise their parents and teachers as they made their entrance at the school in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

And surprise them they did. With a flourish and a fanfare, they revealed their costumes - to outraged gasps from the crowd.

Bad taste: A girl strides into her school at Chiang Mai dressed as Adolf Hitler, seemingly oblivious to the offensiveness of her costume

Shock: Smiling pupils carrying a Swastika flag were met with horror from foreign parents and teachers, who were left reeling at the bad taste of the procession

The smiling pupils arrived at the school dressed in full Nazi regalia and carrying large Swastika flags, leaving foreign parents and teachers open-mouthed.

Leading the march into the sports ground was a girl dressed as Adolf Hitler - complete with toothbrush moustache - seemingly unaware of the offence she had caused.

She was followed by a procession of pupils dressed as SS guards - brandishing plastic machine guns.

Stunned ex-pats were appalled. Surely the pupils were aware of what the Swastika and Nazis represented?

Under fire: Thailand's education system was criticised as it emerged that not even the teachers knew what Swastika and Nazi costumes represented

Apparently not, as it emerged that not even the Thai teachers at the school understood what all the fuss was about.

A teacher at the school said: 'It was all very embarrassing. Traditionally the students wear fancy dress on the summer sports day and they like to keep everything they are preparing quiet. Nobody saw any swastikas around the school before the event.

'But then on sports day when we saw these Nazi storm troopers we were appalled. We told the Thai teachers that this was not on. But they did not understand what was wrong with the display.'

History lesson: The school was asked to put the Holocaust - and Adolf Hitler - on the curriculum

Today, a delegation from the consulates of Britain, the United States, France and Germany descended on the school to protest about the controversy - and called on teachers to put modern history and the Holocaust on the curriculum.

They left the premises after the school told them no malice had been intended.

Chiang Mai is a popular retirement destination for many Europeans and Americans, some of whom lost relatives to the Nazis.

A British parent added: 'It could have been worse. They could have been marching to the 'Horst Wessel Song or Bomb Oh Bombs on England."

The school's principals did not want to comment about the incident, but a spokesman said: 'We did not know what the students had planned. No offence was intended.'

This is not the first incident of its kind in Thailand. In 2007 about 200 students from a Bangkok school dressed as Nazis for their summer sports day, Sieg Heiling as they strutted around.

Kanya Khemanan, a director of the Thewphaingarm School, was forced to apologise to the Los Angeles-based Holocaust museum Simon Wiesenthal Centre following the incident.

Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center said at the time: 'We are long past the time when such incidents take place in Asia that can be excused due to "alleged" ignorance of the Nazis' atrocities during World War II.'
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

A similar swastika symbol is used in Buddhism...predates the German use...maybe this is part of the problem...

Jesus wept. Even the teachers dont have a clue. Shows the true state of Thai education. Worthless in a word. The students have to memorize temples and their provinces but are never taught world history or geography. Oh I forgot the world revolves around Thailand. Thailand is second to none, and Thailand is self sufficient.

Awareness of the outside world, and its history is a closed book (literally) to Thai students and (consequently) adults.

The second world war and its history is especially going to be sensive to Thailand, who escaped the full consequences of their behaviour during that period.

Not the first time this has happened, as the article mentions, the previous incident is in the famous threads section here...

However, the uniforms seemed a little better on the previous occasion...

Very true. I know a Thai high school teacher. She did not know about Germany in WW2 and was oblivious to the fact that Thailand had been occupied by Japan. She kept insisting that Thailand had never been conquered or colonized by ANYONE.

The drum majorette's baton carried by Hitler and the red track suits are particularly authentic.

Not in Thailand. The Japanese occupation is not talked about in school. Most Thais do not even know about the Khmer Rouge either. ;(

Yes quite likely. I actually deleted that quote in my post, as I had second thoughts.

Take my wife for example. She hasn't got a clue about military history. All she knows about is cosmetics and handbags.

In China and Korea there is still an issue with the Japs.

It's true, years ago they wanted to teach about the political uprisings in Thailand, but the education minister said it wasn't history because ppl taking part were still alive.

I hope other International Schools could do something similar.

How about a re-enactment of the '73 & '76 Thai Student Massacres? Or even a nice big colourful (yet tasteful) Bloody May pageant?

I don't know, I find this is quite amusing to be honest

anyway, Nazi parades were quite joyful and quite a spectacle, so I can see how Thais could be mistaken by the real meaning of all the Nazi decorum

Wiesenthal Center Urges Thai Leaders to Condemn Christian School Event Glorifying Nazis | Simon Wiesenthal Center

Wiesenthal Center Urges Thai Leaders to Condemn Christian School Event Glorifying Nazis

    September 26, 2011

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is calling on Thailand’s Christian leaders to condemn a Nazi parade at the Sacred Heart Preparatory School in Chiang Mai led by students who participated in a Nazi parade replete with Seig Heil salutes, Nazi marches, gun-toting adults and even a young person dressed as Adolf Hitler (see visuals below). The march started on the school grounds and continued into the streets of the adjoining neighborhood.

“Disgusted parents and outraged members of the public forwarded to us the visuals of a Nazi parade at the Sacred Heart School, the second such incident since 2007, involving the veneration of Nazism at a Thai school,” charged Rabbi Abraham Cooper associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights NGO. “It is difficult to calculate the hurt such a display inflicted on survivors of the Nazi Holocaust and the families of all victims of Nazism. There can be no justification for such an outrage to emanate from place of learning,” he said.

“The Nazis were responsible for the Holocaust, history's worst crime, and had they prevailed during World War II, their racist ideology would have eventually targeted all races the Nazis deemed ‘inferior’, including Asians,” Rabbi Cooper added. “From the visual evidence, it is clear that this Nazi celebration could not have taken place without the knowledge and cooperation of the school administration. The Simon Wiesenthal Center urges that those ultimately responsible for a school calling itself ‘Christian’, take immediate action against all those responsible for promoting and facilitating this disgraceful display. It is important that the pedagogical decisions at Sacred Heart be put in the hands of people who themselves know right from wrong,” Cooper added.

“If and when an administration is put in place at Sacred Heart that is committed to teaching ethics and history, our Center is prepared to provide the materials that will educate the faculty and student body about the Nazi mass murder of 6 million Jews, including 1.5 million children, gypsies and other innocent victims,” Cooper concluded.

Rabbi Cooper, a frequent visitor to Asia, added that a similar parade took place in 2007 at a school in Bangkok involving 200 students and more recently, ‘Slur’, a rock ban donned Nazi uniforms and swastikas in a music video.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations with over 400,000 member families in the United States. It is an NGO at international agencies including the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, the OAS, the Council of Europe and the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino).
