In what is the most diabolical thing I have read today, a report from Very Vietnam alleges that some Chinese food producers are creating synthetic rice out of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plastic. The “rice” is made by mixing the potato material together, shaping it into grains, and then adding an “industrial resin” as a binding agent. Very Vietnam says that these resins can be very harmful if eaten.

You can boil this variety to make glue or porridge - same same.

I have a Chinese friend who told me about this a few years back.

Yonks ago I bought my parents a square egg machine. You boiled your eggs, shelled them and while they were still hot and rubbery - popped them into the square egg machine and there they were - square eggs.

They used it twice until the novelty wore off. Or, as they told me, it broke. I was only seven at the time.

I reckon it's urban legend gone wild, like the Soy Sauce made from Human hair story. Every couple of years there's one of these.
