Yes the prudish Chinese has been destroying the vibrant Thai culture that once existed. We hope the demonstration by the girls brings back the real Siamness to the fore.

Nothing nicer than the young nubile body on display. Isn't that part of the celebration? The old giving way to the new, rebirth, confidence in the future etc etc?

    Topless Songkran Revelers in Silom

    UPDATE : 18 April 2011

On the last night of the Songkran Festival, many Thais were shocked at seeing in the news young women with their breast uncovered, enjoying themselves on a platform amidst a crowd of excited men. The picture was totally in conflict with the current trend which is intended to bring back traditional Songkran celebrations of the old days.

It is not that such practice of exposing private parts does not exist in Thai society, but Thais prefer not to talk about it in public. It is widely known that there are activities even more obscene than those half-naked girls splashing water on Silom Road.

Such x-rated activities, which involve use of toys and intercourse with various creatures, can be found deep in the alleys of Silom and Pattaya. They have been there for decades.

It is not that the public are unaware that those activities, but because of the hypocritical characteristic of Thai society, they'd rather turn a blind eye to the matter. To them, somethings are better left unspoken.

But today, Thai society is more open. The younger generation, and even certain old timers, seem to have higher self-confidence. Sad as it is, that self-esteem is more expressed in improper ways.

On magazine covers, models are willing to wear fewer clothes to be famous. In politics, politicians dare use explicit language and engage in more wrongdoings.

So, it should not be surprising to see topless revelers dancing at the center of Silom intersection.

The evidence of uncontrolled freedom and confidence is even more rampant in cyberspace.

Thai society is coming to a point where everything is too open that cultural and traditional values are about to be forgotten and are no longer what society holds onto.

Isn't it because Thais have long ignored their valuable traditions and culture and regarded them as outdated? They are so ready to leave behind anything seen as old-fashioned and to accept new trends.

The sight of bare-breasted girls that night on Silom Road might be disturbing, but in a different aspect, it might well be a nudge on the conscience of Thais that they should start looking at themselves in the mirror. Or shouldn't they?

I love this forum and the hiso comments concerning our host. My only complaint is those tarts and their catars are not up to snuff to represent Thailand. Way too much junk in the trunk and a waistline like a quai.

cute girls, harmless fun, you see 100 times worse than this on Sukhumvit and Patpong every night. I think politically over reaction to see some young boobs has this politician not thinking clearly.

"In the past, people celebrated the tradition with their families, neighbors or those whom they actually knew. ... Nowadays, they are celebrating with strangers," said Chalidaporn, a prominent feminist.

"Since we cannot turn back the hands of time ... the Thai state should instead come up with some measures to control the crowd and limit alcohol sales during the festival," Chalidaporn said.

Not sure when the puritanical period started in Thailand, but the women used to be topless and there were to 500 baht fines. It is just another way for someone to make money. We all know this is a joke, especially here in Thailand where skin sells and can be seen everywhere.
Europeans go topless all the time, but it will get you a fine in the US. Such a stupid mindset and I hate to see anyone go down the road they have in the states. Let the women go topless anytime they want and there will be no stigma. On second thought, not all women should go topless and there should be some sort of regulation and I offer my free services to be a regulator.

..Tomorrow they'll be telling us they were from Isaan and their mothers are married to foreign husbands. More pre-election spin. The inference of course is that Peau Thai and Red Shirts are immoral, pushed by Thaksin and his "foreign" friends, fooling uneducated bumpkins into immoral activities that are selling the heart and soul of Thailand.

Jesus "TS" let us know what your on?

The subject on this thread (as I undetstand it) is semi naked (not naked) women dancing...so unusual to see in Thailand I was really surprised, NOT!

Now get off your political soapbox and watch the Katoey's dance, if you look really carefully you'll spot "pupa" in the crowd.

I'm not suggesting the girls were part of the con (you old git). I'm saying the reaction of the yellow media is to try to suggest this is all because of the path Thailand has taken since Thaksin - without them saying "Thaksin" - they are trying to shift people into thinking that an elected government will never bring about a good and moral society. It's part of the plan - this was a gift for them
