Thai Sex Worker Murdered and Left to Rot In New Zealand Apartment

Thai Sex Worker Murdered and Left to Rot In New Zealand Apartment

This is the gruesome account of a Thai woman who was strangled and her body left to rot. The murderer, her boyfriend, endured the smell of decomposition without attempting to do anything about it until he was discovered and subsequently arrested.

November 8: a Thai sex worker was murdered by her boyfriend in New Zealand, who left her body to rot in her apartment for three and a half weeks before police found the body, alerted by her concerned landlord. The woman, Nuttidar Vaikaew, 48, had come to New Zealand some nine years ago and worked as a sex worker from her apartment in Western Springs, Auckland.

The accused, Gordon Hieatt, 47, is currently undergoing trial at the High Court in Auckland in New Zealand, where he has pled not guilty. The jury was told that Ms Vaikaew had had what has been described as an on-off relationship with the accused for approximately two and a half years. On the night of the alleged murder, sometime after April 16, 2010, Hieatt and Ms Vaikaew had had an argument, during which he was accused of strangling her. He then apparently left the body where he had killed her on the bed to decompose, according to the prosecutor.

The incident came to light when the victim’s landlord called for his rent, which was overdue. The door was answered by Hieatt, who identified himself as Ms Vaikaew’s boyfriend. When asked if Ms Vaikaew was available, Hieatt replied that she was sick. Suspicious and nauseated by the incrediby bad smell coming from the apartment, the landlord notified police who duly came to investigate.

Hieatt answered the door once again and when asked if all was well by the police, he confessed that he had killed his girlfriend, Ms Vaikaew, after an argument. Proceeding into the darkened apartment, police discovered the victim’s body lying on the bed, with a fan pointing towards it.

“The smell was indescribable and putrid dead flies and maggots were all over the lounge and particularly on the bed,” the prosecutor reportedly told the jury.

Hieatt had apparently made a habit of visiting other sex workers, one of whom he had seen in the interim. The court was also told that the accused had spent time at the victim’s apartment, despite the awful smell and decomposing body. The court also learnt that Hieatt was in an ongoing relationship with yet another woman in Thailand, whom he had confessed to about murdering Ms Vaikaew by online messaging service.

The trial is scheduled to last a further two and a half weeks and the Crown will call 26 witnesses, according to the New Zealand Herald from which this account was adapted.

The smell must have been horrendous. Why bother with a trial, the guy is obviously a nut job, bang him up and throw the key away.

there's an earlier thread on this here (NZ : Murder victim named as Thai prostitute)

    quote 17 June 2009
The accused’s lawyer, Nikolas Wintour, requested the man’s name suppression be continued until he had consulted with his client’s psychiatric doctor.
There were concerns for his mental health, Mr Wintour said.

    quote 3 August 2009
Gordon Hieatt, a 47-year-old computer programmer, is charged with murdering 48-year-old Nuttidar Vaikaew.
Crown prosecutor Rachel Reid said police were opposed to name suppression continuing as earlier concerns about the accused's mental health were no longer an issue.

so on basis of above they have done their psychiatric assessments and he's fit stand trial?

    Accused killer won the Lotto
    IAN STEWARD
    14/11/2010

    WINNER: Murder accused Gordon Hieatt.

A computer programmer who won first division Lotto is on trial for the murder of his Thai prostitute girlfriend.

Police allege Gordon Hieatt, 49, murdered Nuttidar Vaikaew, 48, then kept her body in a bed in the lounge of their Auckland flat for three and a half weeks.

During his trial at the High Court at Auckland it emerged this week that Hieatt had won $750,000 on the Lotto in the 1990s but a series of failed investments left him bankrupt.

By last year he was living with Vaikaew in a Western Springs flat.

Hieatt's stepsister, Michele Cavanagh, told the court of conversations with her brother since his arrest in which he described his volatile relationship with his girlfriend.

Their fights would often end with Vaikaew, who had loose teeth due to gum disease and was worried about her deteriorating looks, begging him to kill her, Cavanagh told the court.

On April 16 the pair argued and Hieatt put his hand over her mouth to quieten her but in doing so pushed her teeth in and made them wonky, Cavanagh said.

"She was saying, 'Kill me, kill me', and he said, 'No, no' then something snapped and he said 'yes'," she told the court.

Cavanagh said Hieatt's account was that he went and got a rope and strangled her.

"She kind of lay there, she didn't say anything, she didn't try to stop him." The defence's version of the argument between Hieatt and Vaikaew emerged during cross-examination. Hieatt's lawyer put it to Cavanagh that her brother tried to restrain Vaikaew because she was being so aggressive.

"Did he tell you of tying her to the bed?

"That she didn't struggle and it felt like she wanted to die?

"Did he say that it was 'suddenly like I was just a spectator watching a movie'?"

Cavanagh said Hieatt made a note in his electronic diary recording the event, then took Vaikaew's body to the bathroom.

The lawyer asked if he told her he cleaned her body.

"Did he tell you he got into bed with her, wrapped his arms around her?"

Cavanagh said Hieatt had told her he "loved her too much".

"He couldn't live with her and he couldn't live without her," she said. The Crown says Hieatt continued life as normal over the following three and a half weeks, including going to family gatherings, making trips to Wellington, visiting prostitutes and chatting online to another girlfriend in Thailand.

Her body was discovered after the landlord investigated and called police because of the smell.

Vaikaew's body was on a bed in the lounge with a fan set up over it.

The corpse was heavily decomposed and was holding an ace of hearts playing card.

The defence has indicated it accepts Hieatt killed his partner but will advance the partial defence of provocation which, if successful, would lessen the charge to manslaughter.

The trial continues next week with Hieatt expected to testify in his own defence.

I noticed that too. Perhaps it's his evil twin that was never born. That made him do it.

NZ man shared bed with dead girlfriend
    8 November 2010

After killing his Thai sex-worker girlfriend, a New Zealand man slept next to her body, a court has heard.

Giving evidence at his trial in the High Court at Auckland for murder, Gordon Hieatt, 48, said he strangled Nuttidar Vaikaew, also 48, with a slipknot after they had an argument in April last year.

After she was dead, Hieatt washed her with a cloth before spending the night in bed with her body, the court was told on Wednesday.
He denied touching her in a sexual way.

Hieatt spent most of the next month living with her rotting corpse in a curtained off corner of the lounge room of his North Island apartment, reading jokes to cheer himself up, Crown prosecutor Rachel Reed told the court earlier this month.

Ms Vaikaew's landlord contacted police because he noticed a foul smell emanating from the apartment when he stopped by to collect overdue rent.
When police went to investigate in May they found an electric fan pointed at the corpse to try to minimise the stench.

Ms Reed said Hieatt's computer records showed he engaged in online chats with a sex worker in Thailand while in the apartment.

He also took four brief trips to Wellington, where he visited a prostitute.

Prosecutor David Johnstone said Hieatt made a conscious decision to kill Ms Vaikaew after he punched her and became worried she would contact the police.

On Wednesday, Hieatt responded: "I didn't want to kill her; it's not what I wanted to do."

Man who lived with corpse jailed for 11 years

Man who lived with corpse jailed for 11 years
    Last updated 11:28 25/02/2011

An Auckland computer programmer who murdered of his "on-again, off-again" Thai girlfriend then lived with her decomposing body has been sentenced to a minimum of 11 years imprisonment at the High Court in Auckland.
Gordon Hieatt, 49, strangled Nuttidar Vaikaew, 48, to death in April 2009, then kept her body in a bed in the lounge of their shared Auckland flat.
During the trial Hieatt admitted killing Vaikaew but argued he did not intend to do so.
In sentencing Justice John Priestley said the murder was caused by Hieatt's "anger and frustration and tendency to blame the victim".
He also had "serious personality flaws" he had not been able to overcome despite being an intelligent, well educated man employed in a high-skilled industry.
"You strangled her to death in your rented home [and] bizarrely you continued to live with her decomposing corpse for the next three and a half weeks," he said.
Justice Priestley said it was a tragedy no friends and family of the deceased had had any input into the sentencing.
He said it was also a tragedy that Hieatt spent his developmental years living in a "most unsatisfactory environment as a child" and once he was uplifted from his mother, apparently also a prostitute, he thrived.
As he was being sentenced Hieatt had difficulty breathing and the guard had to get him a cup of water.
Hieatt's lawyer Peter Kaye said Hieatt plans to appeal the sentence.
During the trial the court heard that several months before the murder Hieatt had moved in with Vaikaew, a prostitute know as 'Sky', in her Western Springs flat.
Vaikaew's landlord, Ray Goffin became concerned when he and neighbours had not seen her for nearly a month so on the afternoon of May 12 he went to visit her at home.
After knocking several times on the door of Vaikaew's flat, Hieatt answered and said to Goffin, "I am Gordon, Nuttidar's boyfriend, Nuttidar is sick and she has been sick for a few days".
Goffin became suspicious and rang police.
When Hieatt answered the door to police he said: "She's dead and has been dead for four weeks. We had an argument and I killed her."
The police officers were greeted by a smell "indescribable and putrid" and dead flies and maggots littered the floors.
Vaikaew's body was on a double bed in a curtained-off corner of the lounge, covered in blankets with a dressing gown over the head.
The corpse was heavily decomposed and a fan was blowing over the bed to try and alleviate the stench.
During the trial Hieatt's stepsister Michele Cavanagh said Hieatt had told her he "loved her too much".
"He couldn't live with her and he couldn't live without her," she said.
It also emerged that Hieatt won $750,000 on the Lotto in the 1990s but a series of failed investments had left him bankrupt.

Prostitutes ply trade near dangerous buildings

Christchurch prostitutes aren't letting natural disaster prevent them from plying their trade on the streets despite the dangers of aftershocks in the city.

Teetering in boots, two women picked their way through mud and rubble of collapsed shops in Ferry Rd, towards the visibly leaning Lancaster Park Hotel.

"Do we look pretty?" one, dressed in a skimpy red corset, asked.
