Warrants have been issued for the arrest of a man and a woman for suspected involvement in the bomb explosion at Saman Metta Mansion apartment building in Nonthaburi on Tuesday, national police chief Wichean Potephosree said on Friday.

The two were idenfified as Kasidit Thanarat and Amporn Jai-kon. The two appeared on video footage from a closed-circuit camera in the area.

The woman had covered her head with a scarf, but police checked her house registration details and found she is a Buddhist, not a Muslim.

Investigators were looking into whether they had any links with Samai Wongsuwan, the bombermaker who died in the blast, Pol Gen Wichean said.

The inference over and over here - and in the Thai news - is that the Reds are responsible for all the grenade attacks too (or 'bombs' as the media keep calling them) at bus stops and other places where ordinary non-beligerants habitate. There is a clear attempt to try to claim that ALL these incidents are the work of the Reds and that, somehow, the discovery of this 'bomb factory' proves that point - it doesn't.

Not true at all. At first it looked to me like a meth lab explosion. With two or three days of further reporting it's seems pretty likely that someone was making bombs there - quite possibly a red faction with some help frm muslims bomb-makers from the south (maybe..not clear) - but that still doesn't link the Reds to the grenade attacks in public places. Attacking the general public is counter-intuitive and counter-productive - exactly what the pro-government shadowy forces would want to see.

No linkage between Bang Bua Thong blast and southern violence: Prayuth

Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha on Friday dismissed speculation about the involvement of southern insurgents and the Bang Bua Thong explosion on Tuesday.

"The woman captured by the security camera is not a Thai Muslim but put on a dress like a southern native," he said, citing an official report.

The woman in question had a headscarve when she paid a visit to the apartment room before the explosion, triggering speculation.

Police identify woman in headscarf

Maid of the ill-fated mansion has confirmed that Amporn Jaikorn was a woman in headscarf wanted by police in connection with the Nonthaburi's bomb blast.

The maid, whose name is not revealed, identified Amporn from the photo shown to her by police. She also said that Amporn was a regular visitor to Rm 202 rented by Samai Wongsuwan, a suspected bomb maker, killed when explosives accidentally went off on Tuesday.

The blast at the mansion killed four, including Samai.

Pol Col Sophon Puengchai, a police commander in Nonthaburi said that police have so far questioned about 40 people, including owner of the mansion, tenants, and neigbhours, in a bid to hunt for the big fish in the Nonthaburi bomb incident.

Police are confident that the bomb making in Rm 202 can be linked to several bomb attacks in Bangkok.

"Tapes used in other attacks can match with the tapes we found from the mansion's explosion site," he said.

Pol Col Sophon said that Samai appeared to be only a bomb maker, not the big fish. "Samai's bank account had not much money and only an amount of between 5,000 to 10,000 were deposited into his bank account," he said.

What about the pickup truck with the southern province registration plate (was it Narathiwat?). Who'se truck? And how did they get the woman's house registration so fast?

All these obvious questions - unlikely to be answered. Must be making their US advisors work overtime..

Based upon my armchair position, and when viewing what went down a few months ago in Bangkok, it was clear a small minority of the red shirts supporters would die and kill for a cause they really believe in and lets not forget that fact.

I for one am not surprised if the culprits behind this bomb blast was a group of red shirts supporters and I doubt that anyone else would be surprised, particularly those that also believe in their cause.

Right or wrong, its an ongoing war and human nature will ensure it goes the full distance.

Reconciliation will not happen until one side gets what they want and I would include the Southern insurgents amongst those who want something and will not give up until they get it.

Well, there's been a clear attempt by you to claim that ALL these incidents are the work of the Amart/ Gov't, and this incident (and it's overwhelming evidence to the contrary) is the first time you've conceded the possibility that it was the work of the red shirts (albeit via a meth lab theory). A man and a woman in a Muslim headscarf seen in security-camera footage at a Nonthaburi apartment where a powerful explosion occurred on Tuesday have been identified by police.

Police have linked them to suspicious activities and acquired arrest warrants for them.

The man is identified as Kasi Ditthanarat, 48, who has changed his name seven times and was once wanted by police in Narathiwat for alleged fraud. The woman is Amphorn Jaikorn, 61, a retired government teacher also based in the southern province, police sources said yesterday.

They said Kasi borrowed a Toyota pickup truck with Narathiwat licence plate Kor Khor 3898 from his brother. The vehicle was seen being used by suspected bomb-maker Samai Wongsuwan, who was killed by Tuesday's explosion in Room 202 of Samarn Metta Massion. The security footage was compared to a mugshot of Kasi to identify him. After the explosion, Kasi withdrew money from a cash machine in a province in the Central twice for a total of Bt50,000.

A security intelligence source said a woman with appearance similar to Amphorn had been located and questioned after she tried to sell another car, also with a Narathiwat licence plate, to a dealer. "She was set to flee with the money she got from selling the car, before she was found and apprehended," the source said.

In tracing Amphorn, police acquired information about her from brochures of a website selling traditional fabrics in the South. The Lan Nara shop has a branch in Chiang Mai, a stronghold of pro-red people where Samai was based before he took part in the red-shirt protests in May. He later disappeared, until his body was found at the explosion site.

An RPG launcher and four rockets found Thursday night in a room near the old Pheu Thai Party headquarters off Rama IV Road had nothing to do with a recent weapons theft from an Army depot in Lop Buri, the acting Bangkok police chief Pol Lt General Jakthip Chaijinda said.

Police have acquired arrest warrants for two people who rented the room, Suksan Rangwiwen and Preeda Kaenpho. Two AK-47 rifles and 750 rounds of ammunition were also found in the room.

Meanwhile, the Depart-ment of Special Investigation said an alleged triggerman believed responsible for M79 attacks on troops during the May protests, Aram Saeng-arun, had refused to cooperate and did not implicate anyone, and said he would speak only during trials. He entered court custody yesterday after the Criminal Court turned down his request for a temporary release.

The Senate committee on human rights yesterday called on Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai to review his decision to give Bt400,000 to the family of Samai according to normal procedures for victims, saying that at least the grant should have been delayed until the police investigation into Samai's alleged crimes was over.

Senator Somchai Sawaengakarn said the payment was against the Constitution, which stipulated that the government-subsidised compensation must be paid to victims of crimes.

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha has warned the public against jumping to conclusions about a possible link between Tuesday's deadly Nonthaburi explosion and southern unrest.

Despite an arrest warrant being issued for Amporn Jaikorn, 49, the woman dressed in Muslim clothing caught on a security camera visiting room 202 where the suspected bomber Samai Wongsuwan lived, the army commander said there was no clear evidence to substantiate the theory yet.

An investigation is under way and it is too early to tell if there is any connection between the two incidents, the army chief said.

The explosion at Bang Bua Thong apartment in Nonthaburi killed four people, including Samai, and left nine others injured.

Gen Prayuth also indicated that the weaponry found in a shophouse in Bangkok's Saphan Luang area was not the type used by the country's armed forces.

Police on Thursday found four rocket-propelled grenades, a grenade launcher and an assault rifle in the rented room some 200 metres from an old office of the Puea Thai Party on Rama IV Road. The army sent its explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel to inspect the weapons yesterday.

The army commander urged the public not to be alarmed by the Nonthaburi blast and weapons discovery.

Gen Prayuth assured that security forces are on full alert.

He also asked the people to cooperate with security authorities, especially during searches of vehicle for suspect items. He said he understood vehicle searches could cause traffic jams and inconvenience to motorists but they were necessary for order to be restored.

Gen Prayuth said the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who oversaw national security, from his cabinet post would not affect the work of the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES).

The centre's security operations do not depend on individuals but regulations and laws that govern the agencies involved, he said.

Mr Suthep, formerly head of the CRES, tendered his resignation as deputy prime minister yesterday to contest a by-election in Surat Thani. Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon now serves as the centre's acting director.

Meanwhile, a source revealed that three top members of the CRES sought a meeting with Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra yesterday. The source said the security officials wanted cooperation from the city administration, particularly over access to its network of closed-circuit TV cameras.

The source said that Minister Prawit, Gen Prayuth and police chief Wichean Potephosree went to see MR Sukhumbhand at City Hall yesterday.

The CRES wanted to know how many CCTVs have been installed in Bangkok by the city administration, where they were located and whether they are fully functional or not.

The governor yesterday refused to provide details of the talks with the CRES. MR Sukhumbhand said the city administration had installed CCTVs at more than 800 locations deemed as vulnerable to attack. It had also set up a network of volunteers in all 1,868 communities to keep a close watch for suspicious items and people.

Another source, however, said that in fact, a total of 2,928 CCTVs had been installed in the city. Of this number, 1,972 of them are functioning well. Some 280 CCTVs are used to monitor traffic, the rest are waiting to be hooked up to power supplies from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority.

City Hall plans to install 10,000 more CCTVs within the next two years.

This is the truth of the issue, and the army/ISOC/CRES has turned this into a war, so what do they expect...

They are clearly petrified that the southern mob, who are excellent at violence, team up with the red mob who seem less good at violence at the moment. Groups are, and will continue, to allign together against this government, that was always gonna happen as soon as MrT was out of the picture (why do you think the junta try so hard to keep him in focus...).

One logical course, which we all hope will not happen, is an all out civil way. Another is a nationwide anti-government extremist organization; this is more likely and an awful proposition. But, if you look how the Southerners have been treated (for decades), and now how the reds are treated, then history suggests that such groups are an inevitable effect... So sad that these army/bluebloods are so arrogant and greedy that they drive the country to this state... When will it end...

We just need an election and for the results to be respected with the army well out of the picture.

Cash machine only give out 20,000 THB per withdrawal. Two withdrawals equal 40,000 THB max. Something's not right in this statement. Good to see the most intelligent people are on the case (as usual)

above all when you can do it straight away out of the ATM, no need to ask, it's a function in the ATM machine, you select the option to raise your limit, you put your ID card number and then that's it, limit is raised for daily limit.

^ that's correct; you need you passport though (I think), so it's not always convenient unless you carry your passport around with you (probably ID card for Thai.).

I've never met a Thai that knew this (other than bank staff, and most of them didn't :)).

All machines except Bangkok Bank and UOB give 20,000thb max per single transaction.

Bangkok Bank gives 25,000thb, UOB gives 30,000thb max.

Daily limits are different.
