Suvarnabhumi - Zone 2 Parking Lot at Airport Closed off by Armed Men

Zone 2 Parking Lot at Airport Closed off by Armed Men

    UPDATE : 1 October 2010

The first floor of Zone 2 parking lot at the Suvarnabhumi Airport has been closed off by armed men who arrived at around 4 A.M. this morning. The problem stems from a concession dispute after a new concessionaire won the rights to manage the parking lot, but the previous concessionaire refuses to vacate the premises. Around 40 armed men dressed in black took over the parking lot early this morning and closed it down. Police are on the scene and are reportedly negotiating with the perpetrators.

Airport officials, however, insist that airport services are open for business as usual. Passengers are advised to avoid the Zone 2 parking lot.

You have to wonder about what is going on in this country, where 40 armed men can turn up and pull shit like this....who is behind this? Seemingly someone with enough clout that they can hire such a group.

I wonder if their employer will face any legal consequences....

I wonder if we'll find out who hired this posse?

I wonder if arrests will be made...

I wonder if there's any point having laws here....

It's a disgrace. Or would be if the people running Thailand had any shame.

amazing, isn't it ? big business dispute ? no problem, bring your militia to the board

I suspect the concession was given to an old Thaksin partner and that now it's being renegotiated

I wonder where that old partner found those armed men dressed in black ?

The new concessionaire that was to take over the car park were awarded the concession by the AoT Revenue Committee who did so without informing the Board of Directors. Suvarnabhumi airport director Niran Theeranartsin approved the award. However, the AoT Board Chairman, Piyapan Champasut pointed out that the proposed contract with Pangram would have a lifespan of 15 years, when all concessions issued by the AoT that exceed five years needed to have board approval.

OK, On monday, the board ordered Suvarnabhumi airport director Niran Theeranartsin and Don Mueang airport chief Aniroot Thanomkulaboot to swap jobs. The changes were made to pave the way for an investigation into alleged irregularities involving a plan to allow Pangrum Retail Co to turn Suvarnabhumi's long-term parking lot into a commercial development named Suvarnabhumi Square.

And then, Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum got involved, and complained about Airports of Thailand Plc keeping him in the dark about major management changes and its operational plans. A Transport Ministry source said the minister was unhappy with the board's decision to move Mr Nirand from Suvarnabhumi.

So it would appear the interested party most concerned with going ahead with the concession would be the Bhumjaithai Party,

Hardly Reds under the beds stuff, is it.

    Welcome to Tinpot Thailand.

Business as usual for this country, firmly rooted in the Third World despite the bells and whistles and the monuments to corruption that fool naive foreigners otherwise.

So ironic that the airport is Thailand's attempt to show how much it is developing, by building the tallest control tower in the World and what was the biggest single terminal building yet it has been plagued by corruption scandals, then taken over with impunity by 'political' paramilitary groups and now by an armed militia.

    You can't polish a turd!

Whatever happened to the King Power corruption case? All swept under the carpet now that the Dems are in power and Vichai is pals with them again.

    Rotten to the core.

They should abolish AoT, it's one of the more openly corrupt organisations in Thailand.

Tourists need to be warned that it isn't safe here.

They cannot ensure safety at the country's main international airport it stands to reason they cannot ensure safety anywhere in Thailand.

that sounds all very nice, but the armed men were blocking the old concession, not the new one.

Back to a new theory for you then

From the OP ......"concession dispute after a new concessionaire won the rights to manage the parking lot, but the previous concessionaire refuses to vacate the premises. Around 40 armed men dressed in black took over the parking lot early this morning and closed it down.

So the previous concessionaire refuses to go and they hire armed men to close it down, is that what you are saying? Bear in mind that the new concession has not been signed over as it is illegal under AoT rules, therefore it would appear that the original party still have possession of the concession (what a phrase!).

I would have thought that was staggeringly obvious. Whether it matters or not is another thing.

I think having a few armed guys around is a nice touch for an airport parking area. Gives a nice feeling of security, and keeps the car thieves at bay. Maybe they can extend this service to the other areas as well. After all they do want to raise the profile of Swampy on the world market...don't they?

Please explain how this would affect tourists arriving in Thailand?

Tourists would have no reason to go to this car park, therefore they would be unlikely to even be aware of the existence of the 'Men in Black'...
