Red couple arrested on arson charge

A British man and his Thai wife, both members of the United Front for Democracy's Chiang Mai branch, were arrested on Wednesday night at Suvarnabhumi airport on charges including attempted arson, Immigration Police Division 2 commander Pol Maj-Gen Visanu Prasartthong-osoth said at a press conference on Thursday.

Pol Maj-Gen Visanu said Keith Wayne Bush, 49, and Alisa Bush, 33, are wanted under arrest warrants issued by the Chiang Mai Court for attempted arson, illegal assembly and inciting unrest.

The footage of a closed-circuit camera showed the two trying to set fire to public property in Chiang Mai on May 19 after the UDD ended its rally at the Ratchaprasong intersection in Bangkok.

Mr Bush was arrested on his arrival from the United Arab Emirates on Flight EY 408 late on Wednesday night. His wife, who went to the airport to meet him, was also arrested.

    The two denied the charges.

They would be handed over to Phuphing Ratchaniwes police in Chiang Mai for legal proceedings, Pol Maj-Gen Visanu said.
"Slavery is the daughter of darkness; an ignorant people is the blind instrument of its own destruction; ambition and intrigue take advantage of the credulity and inexperience of men who have no political, economic or civil knowledge. They mistake pure illusion for reality, license for freedom, treason for patriotism, vengeance for justice."-Simón Bolívar

Or maybe the authorities just though it would be fun to arrest a couple of foreigners at the airport, with no evidence, and in full view of the public and media?

Sure looks like a westerner in the first 5 seconds of this. Looks like in his forties or so, and the bald head somewhat tags him as a Brit.

No westerner should be getting involved with these politics - beyond just jive talk on forums.

That said, this youtube footage only shows a farang putting a tyre on a bonfire. .

    In the middle of street.

Not sure what your ethics or moral code say about that, but I was raised that is generally not something a law abiding person would do.

    Maybe you were raised different.

Does indeed. Dumb move. Not a CCTV video so still no way to determine "evidence" on CCTV or even if it's the same incident.

The arrest warrant says setting fire to public property.

I suppose a road is public property, but perhaps they are referring to another piece of public property. I agree it's unsavoury to burn tyres on the highway (unless one lives in Soweto!).

^^ No claim in my post that this is the guy. It was intended to more tongue in cheek then anything.

Do you have link to "setting fire to public property", the BP article says "attempted arson, illegal assembly and inciting unrest."

You could certianly say the guy in the video was doing all that.

Update: This photo the guy has come out. It really could be him in the video.

Another foreign scapegoat for a Thai problem.

If it was him he should know better but it seems to me they are going after every foreigner suspected of being involved on the flimsiest evidence in typical Thai xenophobic fashion.

It depends. Under normal circumstances that goes without saying, but if I was under the yoke of an increasingly oppressive regime that was brought to power undemocratically as a direct result of military interference in politics, bureaucratic and elitist cronyism and double standards then all bets are off.

But you probably need to be sure which side you choose (if any) is actually against the things you list....

I wouldn't do it in Thailand because no side represents any values or standards worth standing up for. However I can see why people have as this mob are the worst I have seen in many years here. Certainly giving Thaksin a run for his money and they are not anywhere near as popular.

It will be a Cold day in Hell when there is a Thai political party that represents anything I would put pen to paper for (even if I could).

It seems as if political parties here are getting more odious and despicable especially with the fascist People Power Party gaining more mainstream support. Next to the Democrats and the Phew Thai they seem to be equally well funded in the current election campaign in Bangkok. Just who is funding them exactly I wonder?

^^Looks equally funded because the it all comes out of the funds distributed by the Election Commission. Private campaign funding is not allowed.

Second Briton arrested over Red-Shirt protests.

Looks like another Brit got done. This one for for allegedly trying to burn down a town hall in chiang Mai, participating in an illegal rally and inciting unrest.

Hope these two get sent down rather than a slap on the wrist and deported.

Looks like a fine upstanding citizen to me and the wife appears more concerned than he does.

Could it just be that she knows more about the system than he does?
