Phuket Expat Deaths Hit 49, Plus Recent Drownings

By Alan Morison and Chutima Sidasathian
    Saturday, August 21, 2010

STATISTICS from Phuket police record the deaths of 49 expats on Phuket in the year so far to August 17. However, three drownings at beaches in the Kata-Karon region of Phuket in that period are not listed.

This omission probably reflects a delay in the processing of paperwork rather than any attempt to cover up the number of drownings at Phuket's beaches.

The latest fatality statistics, obtained by Phuketwan, are among official figures involving expats on Phuket that will be presented to honorary consuls and embassy representatives at the Governor's special quarterly meeting on Monday.

Phuket police now compile statistics from all police stations involving expats to demolish rumor and gossip about the levels of crimes, trauma and tragedy involving expat residents and tourists on Phuket.

The three drownings currently unrecorded in the statistics are all tourists - Rumanian Gheorghe Paulivc, who drowned at Karon more than a month ago, on July 20; Bahraini Ali Abdulaziz Al Saeed, who drowned at Karon on August 8, and Chinese Zhao Dakun who drowned at neighboring Kata beach in a double-tragedy on the same Sunday afternoon.

While the drownings have been overlooked, the recent murder of Phuket tourist and former US Marine Dashawn Longfellow on August 14 has been listed.

The number of drownings on Phuket's famous western holiday beaches has become a cause for concern over the past two years.

It may well be an issue raised at the governor's meeting with honorary consuls and embassy representatives from as many as 22 nations on Monday.

Here are the official lists. We've published first the most recent deaths, then the deaths that were listed when the honorary consuls and the governor held their second meeting, back in May.

I think this one's sad. No one knows who he was and those who knew him don't know he's dead.

^^That is kind of weird. Maybe it's because they died of their injuries later on in the hospital, unlike Longfellow who died on the spot. Just speculating.....

Thais don't murder foreigners, death by misadventure is probably how they see it.

    from memory . . .
Wolf Dieter Eugen Kbelheim was the one who was stabbed after a cutting off (in 4wd) and abusing Thai on mbike -'traffic incident' at Chalong roundabout - he had the Thai male in a headlock. Was reported as being pissed. And German. Never saw anything re trial maybe too early

Simone Tenerello Italy April 17 struck with bottle by katoey in Patong - was reported as punching anyone/everyone -drunk or drugged maybe. One hit back.

Gabriella Rosemarie Strand Swedish was one of the two so-called 'Scamdinavians' homeless beggars that the Swedes wouldn't help send home; there was a thread about them, been begging/living rough a long time. Maybe she'd crawled in there to sleep

official figures involving expats on Phuket that will be presented to honorary consuls and embassy representatives at the Governor's special quarterly meeting on Monday.
i wonder what they plan to do about it?

The only obvious thing is to get lifeguards for the beaches. They couldn't do that last time they tried, could they? Something about nobody wanting a multi million baht contract to provide the service

52 FOREIGNERS KILLED IN PHUKET THIS YEAR

    By Yongyot Preuksarak
    The Nation
    Published on August 26, 2010

Fiftytwo foreign tourists have died in the island province of Phuket this year, police revealed yesterday.

    - mostly from illness but also through accidents and crime.

Phuket police chief Pol MajGeneral Pikad Tantipong told a meeting of foreign consulate representatives and Thai state and private agencies, that some 60 tourists died in Phuket in 2008 and 28 in 2009. Alcohol was involved in most of the crimes involving tourists, he added.

This year, from January until August 17, 52 tourists had died in Phuket from accidents, suicide, murder and illness, Pikad said. There were 126 criminal cases with foreign tourists as suspects and 24 cases with foreigners as victims, he said.

The German Embassy also inquired about the case of Thai officials seizing the passport of an arrested national. The embassy reminded officials a passport is its government's property and asked for its return. Thai officials have urged police to meet with embassy officials for mutual understanding and to save future embarrassment.

Pikad explained that when police arrest a foreign suspect, they must check his passport. If the suspect is found to be guilty, police seize his passport to prevent him fleeing the country.

If he is just a suspect, police photocopy his passport and return the original, he said. In case of road accidents in which a tourist is liable for damages, he said police will also seize the passport and return it after the damage payment is made in full.

Lies, Damn Lies and Phuket Drowning Statistics

By Alan Morison and Chutima Sidasathian
    Monday, September 6, 2010
    News Analysis

PROMISING results are being achieved in saving lives on Phuket's roads and probably in the water, too. Latest statistics reflect safety campaigns on the roads and an improved beach lifeguard service.

However, there's just one problem. Phuketwan knows there was at least one death from drowning in July, a month that Phuket Public Health statistics say was free from drownings on and around Phuket.

Just-released Public Health stats also show five deaths on Phuket roads in July. This compares with 12 deaths in July 2009. Year on year, the total for January-July so far is 77 deaths compared to 94 in the same period last year.

And the July total for injuries on the roads was under 1000 for the third month in a row - a statistic that has not been seen previously in recent times.

A dramatic change in attitude and approach, spearheaded by Phuket City police superintendent Colonel Wanchai Eakporntip and his helmet-wearing campaign, is being credited with saving lives and preventing pain and suffering on Phuket.

Improvements may also be expected in August, which last year produced the horrifyingly large tally of 19 deaths on Phuket in one month.

Drownings on and around Phuket have also been reduced, with 20 deaths attributed to drowning to the end of July compared to 36 at the same stage last year. The 2009 figure included seven deaths in a dive-boat capsize.

According to Phuket Public Health statistics, there were no drownings on or around Phuket in July - the only drowning-free month recorded recently. However, Phuketwan is aware of at least one drowning in July that appears to have gone unrecorded.

July drowning victim Rumanian Gheorge Paulivc died in Bangkok Phuket Hospital after having been first taken from the sea off Karon beach to Patong Hospital. Two more drownings, one at Karon beach and another at neighboring Kata beach, took place soon after, on the same Sunday afternoon in early August.

Strangely, the deaths of Mr Paulivc and the two other tourists, Chao Dakun, 47, from China, and Ali Abdulaziz Salman Alsaeed, 24, from Bahrain, were omitted from a list of expat deaths produced for the Phuket governor's quarterly meeting with honorary consuls and embassy representatives last month.

Now Mr Paulivc's death fails to be recorded in the official island statistics for drownings in July.

Accurate statistics are essential so action can be taken, when required, to save lives in future. To have these three beach drownings of tourists go unrecorded could lead to the false impression that Karon and Kata beaches are safe places to swim at this time of the year.

If that lie was reflected, for whatever reason, in Phuket's official statistics, the spirits of those three drowned victims would rise up in horror. Those of us who are still alive and have a high regard for accurate statistics would also be entitled to be very unhappy, too.

A spokesperson for Phuket Public Health said today that their statistics were based on information supplied by Phuket's three public hospitals. It was up to the private hospitals to supply any additional information about other deaths, she said.

Phuketwan's view: That's simply not good enough. If statistics are to be believed, they have to be comprehensive, and they have to be accurate. It must surely be mandatory for all hospitals to report all deaths.

It's time Phuket Public Health and all of Phuket's hospitals, which claim to be up to international standards, accepted responsibility for keeping track of the island's fatalities.

To die while on holiday is shocking. To drown and have your death not even noted, not even recorded as a means of preventing the same thing happening to others, would be reprehensible.

*About 60 lifeguards are undergoing five days of intensive training at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort this week. The third annual Phuket Lifesaving Carnival is being held at Loma Park in Patong on September 11.

or that specially designed step thats a different drop size to all the other stairs?

( shouldn't laugh , both have nearly killed me a couple of times).

Six Phuket Expat Drownings, Deaths, Go Unrecorded

    By Alan Morison
    Wednesday, November 17, 2010

THREE drownings of tourists on Karon beach and one on neighboring Kata beach have gone unrecorded in police statistics that are intended to list every expat death on Phuket.

The deaths of two Australians have also gone unrecorded, making a total of at least six expat deaths unaccounted for on what is intended to be a complete list of all expat deaths so far on Phuket in 2010.

All six deaths fail to appear in a preliminary list of 67 expat deaths seen by Phuketwan in advance of the quarterly summit meeting of Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha with honorary consuls and embassy representatives.

The list, incomplete though it is, is due to be presented to as many as 22 national representatives and representatives of Thailand's Foreign Ministry at a meeting set for Monday. Two ambassadors from embassies in Bangkok may also be present.

Three of the deaths, all drownings at Karon and Kata, were also absent from a list presented to an earlier meeting in August. With these three drownings now increased to four - and all missing from the list - the wrong impression is being conveyed about the safety of Karon beach in the monsoon season.

Latest drowning victim to be left off the list of dead is Dimitry Kuznephov, 40, who drowned at Karon beach on November 8. A Thai man, Kittisak Klongpiled, 25, drowned at Karon beach on the same day.

The head of Phuket's lifeguard service has called for Karon beach to be closed to swimmers on dangerous days unless more intense measures are taken to protect the lives of swimmers.

But if deaths by drowning continue to go officially unrecorded, the call for improved safety measures loses its meaning and purpose.

The three drownings, previously reported by Phuketwan to be missing from an earlier expat death list, have yet to be added despite the three months that have passed since the omissions were first noted.

They are Rumanian Gheorghe Paulivc, who drowned at Karon on July 20; Bahraini Ali Abdulaziz Al Saeed, who drowned at Karon on August 8, and Chinese Zhao Dakun who drowned at neighboring Kata beach on the same Sunday afternoon.

Two other missing expat deaths take the total of unrecorded deaths to six. Not included on the list are Australians Stephen Lawton, 55, who collapsed and died in a Karon street on October 22, and Graham Nicholas Jackson, 54, who was found dead in a guesthouse room on October 2 after suffering a prolonged fever.

The new Australian Ambassador to Thailand, James Wise, is making his first official visit to Phuket later this week.

The omission of at least one drowning has also occurred on official figures. According to Phuket Public Health statistics, there were no drownings on or around Phuket in July - the only drowning-free month recorded recently.

However, Rumanian Gheorge Paulivc died in Bangkok Phuket Hospital after having been first taken from the sea off Karon beach to Patong Hospital in July.

Phuket's 67 expat deaths for the year so far - excluding the four drownings and the deaths of the two Australians plus possibly other deaths about which Phuketwan has no knowledge - are as follows:
