S'poreans shunning Thailand

SINGAPOREAN leisure-seekers are ditching the Land of Smiles and turning to other parts of Asia, scared off by the political violence in Bangkok.

More Singaporeans are booking tours and packages to Indonesia, Indochina and Malaysia, forgoing the usual shopping haunts of Bangkok and beaches around Thailand.

Tour agencies such as ASA Holidays have seen a 15 per cent increase in the number of Singaporeans booking travel packages to other Asian destinations - and a corresponding 80 per cent plunge in bookings for Thailand.

At CTC Travel, there was not a single booking for any package to Bangkok, Phuket and Chiangmai last month and this month. 'Travellers are playing it safe and avoiding potential areas of conflict,' said its marketing and communications manager Alicia Seah. 'Even hotel promotions to the country are not proving to be particularly useful.'

She said that many Singaporean travellers had turned to Bali, Vietnam and Cambodia, echoing findings at other agencies. SA Tours, for instance, has seen a 10 per cent to 15 per cent increase in Hong Kong and Taipei bookings.

'While some have postponed their travel plans, many are simply diverting to areas like Bali,' said its marketing and communications manager Eva Wu.

A few of our Singaporean suppliers canceled visits lately, even though our offices are in Rayong. I'm not sure if they are being actively discouraged (by their govt) from visiting Thailand at the moment?

I read an article in Phuket gazette a couple of days ago, seems to be massive increases from the region visiting Indonesia, trouble is once they realise how much cheaper Indonesia is will they bother coming back to Thailand.....

Actually, India and China have more robust relations with the junta. Both countries covet the mineral and oil resources. India's conduct over the past decade has been reprehensible. At least the Singapore government has been consistent and does respect international trade restrictions.

The loss of Singapore tourists is a blow. These are tourists with money and that do not make a beeline to the cheapest of cheap locations and stuff 6 people into a room intended for 2. Nor do they cook in their rooms stinking up the building. Indian & mainland China tourists do add to the number of arrivals, but like their cheap junket pals from Russia and Europe, spend significantly less than the tourists from Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan.

Apologies that Singapore is not cheap or a cheap sex destination. The upside of that is that Russians and other cheapskates of Europe don't come here for their holidays.

Most Singaporeans I know go to Bangkok, Phuket etc regularly for short breaks so it is not a case of them being snobbish or anti-Thailand. They just watch the news lately and don't particularly want to get shot.

Coolio. Just got an email from my boss in the UK that I have to start trying to get Thai Oil to use our services. Bangkok here I come! (well obviously after everything calms down completely)
