    PAD/ASTV Targets "Disloyal" Teen

    This is a translation of an article in ASTV Manager. I think the message is clear. Will we be seeing more of this targeting of individuals? (Of course we will) How long before they're publishing hit lists of names and addresses? The "Fah Daew Gan" (Same Sky) mentioned is a well-established left-leaning Thai political/social magazine and web-site. The magazine criticises and analyses (perhaps that should be in the past tense?) all sides in Thai politics and society. I haven't seen a copy for a while, I know the website was banned a while back. Some idea of the magazine's content and style can be seen here;

    2Bangkok.com - Fah Diew Kan

Silpakorn University rejected the enrollment of “Karn Thoop” due to her anti-monarchist behavior

    from Prachatai English by prachatai
ASTV Manager Daily: “Karn Thoop” a girl and geek at “Fah Deaw Kan”, the vicious poster of messages slandering the monarchy in facebook has been denied enrollment into the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University. According to the Dean, her personality would not help her to get along with fellow students. It was deplorable, but her anti-monarchist behavior is not bearable.

Ms. Natthakarn Sakoondarachart has been known to post topics in Fah Deaw Kan website and facebook featuring slandering, rude and anti-monarchist contents. Among social networkers, there have been many criticisms against her behaviors. A lot of emails and calls have been made to Thara Prasat Petchwittaya School in Nakhon Ratchasima, where she graduated from, to notify the School of such behaviors.

Lately, Ms. Natthakarn passed the entrance examination for the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University. Nevertheless, according to Assc Prof Dr. Pinmanee Promsutthirak, Dean of Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University, it is true that Ms. Natthakarn has passed the entrance for the Faculty of Arts. She is supposed to study in the Asian Studies Department focusing on learning Asian languages including Korean, Japanese, etc. It is a special program set up by the University and only 200 students have been recruited. Ms. Natthakarn’s results of examination are fair.

“Academically, she passed the test and also the oral examination. Thus she was recruited. It was indeed a good opportunity for her since this is a special program and only 200 students are recruited. We will have native speakers to teach. But due to tons of information we have received from people, we have decided to repeal her right to study in our Faculty” said the Dean of Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University.

According to Assc Prof Dr. Pinmanee, there is no written rule that a student of this university has to be loyal to the major national institutes. It is assumed a duty for Thai people to know and hold on to this noble attitude. Considering background of Ms. Natthakarn, it is led to believe her personality shall cause problems. Had she been enrolled, she would not be able to get along with other fellow students.
It was also reported that Ms. Natthakarn is a regular poster of messages showing views against the monarchy in facebook and other websites. In addition, she has declared herself a supporter of the Red Shirts demonstration, and has even spoken on the stage to instigate the demonstrators.

Jesus, that's just awful. What a shower of bigots. Just awful. And we wonder why the standard of education in Thailand is so low.

I think this must be the Silpakorn Uin in Nakon Prathom.

This is a very sad and disgusting move yet again from the PAD. Poor girl I wish her the best.

A friend of mine recently applied to do his Masters there but was refused because he had his BA was from what they called an inferior private university.

    Absolutely disgraceful action from PAD/ASTV.
And here was me thinking no matter where you came from in Thailand if your education level was high enough and you passed your exams you had a chance.

It looks like the Reds picked on the wrong people should have targetted the PAD/ASTV and The Nation in that order and destroyed the lot.

    Hi Dr Bob

Dont mean to be insensitive - but have a serious question regarding what you view as parallel situations.

    So you believe that

"been denied enrollment into the Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University"

is only a hop skip n jump away from

"publishing hit lists of names and addresses? "

seriously dude - i think thats an over-reaction.

I mean, here we have to say " blah blah blah -the unmentionable - blah blah" and we all adhere to that - cos thems is the rules.

So they clip the wings of an over zealous kid - whats the biggie?

Here we go again. Nothing new from Sondhi. The last time he did this was when 2
teenages opted not to stand up in the cinema ( not compulsary ).
They were assaulted by a fellow cinema goer and tried to press charges against the person with the police. That person countered with an LM charge and the two found themselves in hot water. Sondhi then published both their names and home addresses in The Manager and urged ' patriots ' to visit their homes and rough them up.

And this is the man who wants to bring the Thais ' new politics ' , the criminal with three 6 month convictions ( under endless appeal ) , who has just given up his position as leader of his own party in order to lead the PAD again. The hypocrite who regained his lost fortune following the occupation of government house and the airport. A thoroughly despicable man.

No, I believe that accusing her of slandering the monarchy and publishing her full name and photograph in a national newspaper, a newspaper notorious for egging people on to attack so-called "anti-royalists", is a hop skip and jump from publishing lists of "disloyal" people's names and addresses. I find it hard to believe that you really don't understand that. Clip her wings? Read the article. She has done NOTHING wrong. You don't mean to be insensitive? You could have fooled me.

Actually it's very interesting on an academic point of view.

We can see from the inside, on real time, the growth of a nazi-like movement.

When are they going to issue the ... I guess this time it will be the "red" stars ?

Only this time people won't be able to say "we didn't know"

Have a red, trying to make light of a medias Witch hunt of a kid is uncool.

It is despicable and disgusting cowardice behavior of the ASTV manager. their action poses a genuine risk to the kids safety, and claims of antimonarchist behavior can very quickly escalate into much more serious trouble with Authorities than just loosing a school, although the thought police policy practiced by the Dean is plenty bad enough though, shame on him too.

I don't think so. As most don't comprehend contemporary Thai history, you'll find that Bob {in his round about way} is referencing the perhaps current history just cycles itself around. This incident would be much different if it got attention in 1957, 1973, or present day. The point is....the system has always been a clarion of rhetoric regarding development and progressiveness, but reality suggests that that keep the old guard roused.

Lets be honest here. The hamfisted and inept actions of a corrupt and basically antidemocratic Establishment are having the affect of multiplying the number of 'disloyal' teens here. And not just teens.

Perhaps there are people here that would argue the government is being 'Clever', but I utterly disagree.

"How long before they're publishing hit lists of names and addresses?" For now we have the "conspiracy map," with names that generally don't require addresses.

Ah, we even have the kind of emesis-inducing unintentional hilarity I recall from my time in the USSR: "But due to tons of information we have received from people, we have decided to repeal her right to study in our Faculty” said the Dean of Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University." Dude, sorry, Dean, like, "tons"? Rilly? But on a more chilling note: ". . .there is no written rule that a student of this university has to be loyal to the major national institutes. It is assumed a duty for Thai people to know and hold on to this noble attitude." Baby, you are not only ignoble, you are un-Thai. Get out of the house if you hate it here so much.

Do you seriously suggest that what the university did is not bigotry?
Do you seriously suggest this is reasonable behaviour for an academic institution?
Did you ever go to a proper university yourself?

Completely irrelevant. The fact that she has alternatives does not justify one fascist instituion from applying their own version of the thought police.

Magdalen is, last thing I knew, the hardest Oxford College to gain admission to. It is also proudly Left leaning and anti monarchist- it is said that most of the academic staff are Socialist, and of course many of the students. The scions of the Establishment happily send their progeny there, to rub shoulders with dissenters and radicals.

But of course I am being facetious, comparing this to Thailand.

glad you said that because if it was one of my daughters I would have warned them about it and its consequences. If they had gone ahead and this would have happened I woulda said som num na - you knew what you were getting into.

Surely things are getting better? before such comments would have put her in jail - now just a change of school??

'fraid so. A Bachelor's degree in Thailand is approximately the same as 1st year Uni in UK or Australia. A Masters is approx equivalent in standard to a Bachelor's in UK/Australia.

I have taught and tutored quite a lot of students from one of the major private universities in Bangkok, and I have to say the standard of education produced is truly lamentable. The old Thai cliche about paying for a bit of paper not the education is regrettably quite true in my experience.

When you hear a 'prominent' doctor saying stuff like 'loyalty to the king is embedded in Thai genes', and saying it with a straight face, you know something is up at mill…

Some years ago, someone got a research grant from the Thaksin government to develop drugs which would act specifically on the Thai DNA. They actually got money for this shit.

Down another rabbit-hole, through another looking-glass.

Yes, so I hear. I also hear that, if Daddy is someone, it is all too easy to get Exam answers prior to the event.

One of Thailands longer term challenges for the current century.
