    Crisis: Perils of military rule

Nyan Win said Suu Kyi was not giving an opinion on the rights and wrongs of the conflict in Thailand, where red-shirted campaigners largely loyal to Thaksin are calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

YANGON - THAILAND'S political crisis shows that a constitution drawn up by the military can never deliver stability, Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Saturday, according to her party.

Myanmar's military junta, which has ruled for nearly half a century, produced a new constitution as part of a 'road map to democracy' which includes elections due to be held later this year.

The election plans have been widely criticised and subject to a boycott by Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), which would have had to expel its leader if it wanted to take part. NLD spokesman Nyan Win said that in a meeting Saturday with Suu Kyi, she discussed the situation in Thailand, which has been wracked by crises since a 2006 coup ejected Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

'A new government coming to power under a constitution drawn up by the military will never be stable,' he cited her as saying. 'We do not need to see very far. We just see Thailand,' she said. 'Thaksin was an elected person. The military seized the power from an elected person. The constitution was drawn up by the military,' she said.

'After that, what happened with the first (government)? It was not stable,' she said of the short-lived administration that followed the coup. 'This was a result of the constitution being written by the military.'

Nyan Win said Suu Kyi was not giving an opinion on the rights and wrongs of the conflict in Thailand, where red-shirted campaigners largely loyal to Thaksin are calling for the ouster of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

    from the blogworld ...................

Thai government spokesman Panitan is quoted in Matichon as saying in response to Suu's comments:
"I think that Thais don't feel that Thailand is becoming similar to Burma and that they [feel the two countries] are not all similiar because we have the democratic system for a long time when other countries have never been democratic.

In addition, there is the issue on how how foreign countries get their news so we need to increase our efforts because some countries might not get enough information because of language or because methods of communication are systematically blocked.

Thus, the news may not be complete.

BP: A short translation. Panitan says that Suu Kyi is uninformed about Thailand.* No doubt Panitan was already going to have difficulty in responding to Suu's comments, but he has dig himself a hole here.

*No word yet on accusations that she was paid to say that Thaksin... but well you know it must be coming.

    h/t to a reader for Suu's comments and S_Narut for Panitan's comments.

Aung San Suu Kyi's Lawyer Defends Controversial Remark
    29 April 2010

Burma opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's lawyer, Nyan Win, says Suu Kyi in fact did not mention Thaksin’s name during a controversial conversation said to have angered the upper echelons of the Thai government, whose grip on power is now looking tenuous.

According to AFP, Aung San Suu Kyi told her lawyer, Nyan Win, that Burma did need not look very far to see that a new government coming to power under a constitution drawn up by the military will never be stable.

Thaksin was an elected person. The military seized power from an elected person. The constitution was drawn up by the military.

Nyan Win insisted he did not deliver such remark and Aung San Suu Kyi did not mention the name of the ousted former prime minister. Nyan said the controversial remark came from AFP.

The remark sparked anger among Thai officials, and government spokesperson Panitan Wattan added that Thailand has had a democratic system for a long time, while other countries have never been democratic.

Nyan Win added the conversation with Aung San Suu Kyi took place during a casual talk, not during a press conference.

The lawyer of the Nobel-awarded woman added she is being confined in a residence, so she cannot do any interviews directly with the press, and she is able to voice her viewpoint only through the members or the spokesperson of her opposition party.
