BANGKOK, April 17
(TNA) -- Anti-government 'Red Shirt' United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) protesters believe Thai Army Chief Gen Anupong Paochina will not apply violence after being assigned to head the operational unit under the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES), said Natthawut Saikuea, a key UDD leader.
Mr Natthawuit told journalists while introducing family members of protesters who were killed during last Saturday's clashes with government troops on Ratchadamnoen Avenue that Mr Abhisit should take political responsibility by dissolving the lower House of Parliament in order to prevent violence from reoccurring.
Future violence will become more severe than the April 10 clashes because the government considers protesters as terrorists, he said.
Mr Natthawut said the appointment of Gen Anupong will put more political pressure on the army chief and if he does not follow the government’s orders, he may be dismissed from his post.
Gen Anupong is scheduled for mandatory retirement at the age of 60 on September 30.
The change in the CRES chief would change the role of Deputy Prime Minister Suthep as he will be "more free in making underground movements," Mr Natthawut claimed.
He said the UDD leaders will send a team of lawyers and submit a letter to Bangkok police on Saturday specifying that all 24 UDD key leaders whose arrest warrants were issued earlier would surrender to police on May 15.
