    Attacked robber to face charges

Villagers attack three alleged robbers in Dangkor district on Thursday. Two died in the attack, while the survivor is now set to face a robbery charge.

THE sole survivor of a brutal mob attack on three suspected robbers that took place late last week in Dangkor district is expected to be transferred from police custody to Prey Sar prison early this week, and police have filed a complaint against him at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, the district’s deputy police chief said Sunday.

“We have filed the records to Municipal Court prosecutor Plang Sophal against the living robber. The primary charge is robbery,” Choup Sokheng said. Plang Sophal could not be reached Sunday.

A group of 400 villagers on Thursday evening attacked three men with sticks, knives, stones and poles after they allegedly stole a motorbike from two young women in Kandal province’s Ang Snuol district, Dangkor district police chief Born Sam Ath said.

Two of the men died at the scene of the attack, but 27-year-old Sok Siet, the subject of the complaint, survived.

Chan Soveth, a senior investigator for the rights group Adhoc, said Sunday that such vigilante killings used to be common, but had tapered off in recent years.

“It was very common nationwide before 2006, but it had decreased since then. Now we are concerned that more mob killings will occur,” he said.

In Thailand it's the pedo allegations.

The khmer version is claim some guy robbed your motorbike.

Personally I'd rather what Andrew Clemands is going through to being beaten to death by a lynch mob.

    Just.

I think Thailand has been modeled on Cambodia for the past 2000 years.

Just don't tell the Chinese. Sorry, Thais.

Thailand still leads the way for vigilante mob justice.

Remember the mentally ill man that chipped the Erawan Shrine statue with a hammer? He was beaten to death in central Bangkok by an angry mob.

That wasn't some backward village in the middle of nowhere, that was the CBD of a capital city.

    Puts it into perspective, huh?

It is. More common than handguns in Cambo. Even sitting in Phnom Penh you see Police riding about on motorbikes carrying them, even the odd random bloke with them too.

Very, very fortunate it wasn't a serious crime!!!

On the upside, the plethora of kids watching probably won't grow up to be motorbike thieves.

Prevention and cure, all in a swing of a baseball bat.

It is really worse than say, in the UK, where they probably would have been given free motorbikes at the taxpayers expense, depending on how ethnic they are.

This is not a Cambodian trait. It happens all over Asia - and elsewhere too prolly.
I saw a Javanese guy get caught outside the Double 6 Club in Legian, Bali, stealing a camera from a tourists car. The balanese mob bashed him for a good 15 minutes before two of them picked up a big block of concerete and dropped in on the guys head. He'll never steal again - or give Bali a bad name.
The cops turned up, and everyone said they had no idea what happened, and there were no arrests.

Saw another guy get caught stealing in the markets in Kathmandu. He was getting beaten by about 50 people. But as my Nepalese guide explained "Nepalese people are very nice, so they won't kill him , they will just beat him"

Give me the UK anytime, as has been proven recently, people who have taken the law into their own hands have rightly suffered as a result.

I also doubt very much that what happened in Cambodia will serve as much of a deterrent to potential thieves as Asians have a problem thinking about the consequences of their actions beforehand.

Yes, but you don't see the pedophiles being beaten with sticks. Instead you get some goose suggesting that the poor bastards are being victimised.

if you have a disinterested and corrupt police force, people will be inclined to take the law into their own hands.

^ They'll probably receive an award from the local constabulary in apprehending the criminals and thus preventing a full scale search being initiated by the police.

Indeed it may prove beneficial for members of the mob to be sworn in immediately as Officers of the Law as clearly they possess the natural skills required of law enforcers. Clearly there are also budget savings to be made as no further training should be deemed necessary.

They would be provided with the 2 essential pieces of equipment for a law enforcement officer, a baseball bat and a whistle! This could prove to the biggest crime prevention scheme of the 21st Century. Well, in asia at least!
Placing them covertly at road junctions would clearly solve the nations problems overnight. No need to ring CRIMESTOPPERS with these guys about!

Saving both time and effort for the judicary is also worthy of a mention and possible citation.

Why not go the whole hog and give them all the freedom of the Cambodia!!

Appointing village idiots as Mayor's appears to be quite trendy nowadays so lets go for it! We all know it makes sense, after all it seems to work well in most other asian countries.
