Red Shirts Surround Chiang Mai Town Hall
    15 March 2010

A red shirt-affiliated group in Chiang Mai has mobilized protestors via local radio stations to surround the provincial town hall.

A Red Shirt-affiliated group in Chiang Mai has used local radio stations to mobilize protestors to surround the provincial town hall as suggested by the fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his video conference to the anti-government protestors last night.

The protestors are aiming to pressure the government to dissolve the parliament.

The protestors have also set up a donation center to receive food and medical supplies to be sent to the mass rally in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, the security at the town hall has been strengthened by the police and volunteer forces as the road in front of the town hall has been reduced to a single lane.

Fences and barbwires have also been installed around the town hall building.

Governor of Chiang Mai Amornphan Nimanant has explicitly ordered the officials to keep a close eye on the situation.

Amornphan has also urged the public to follow the news at home and keep away from the high-risk areas.

Khon Kaen's Red Shirts Begin Local Rally
    15 March 2010

Some 3,000 Red-Shirt supporters in Khon Kaen province gathered in front of the province's town hall in response to the call by fugitive former Prime MInister Thaksin Shinawatra.

A number of Red Shirts in Khon Kaen mounted protest at the province's town hall after the fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra urged his supporters who did not join the mass gathering in Bangkok to come out to rally in their respective provinces.

A stage platform has been erected and some vehicles with loud speakers attached to their roofs have been deployed to encourage people to join the rally.

Director of Khon Kaen's Red-Shirt radio station Thanik Maseepitak said at least 3,000 protesters are expected from a total 26 districts of the province. He said the local rally will run in parallel to the one in Bangkok.

Saw a gathering of about 20, in the local Amphur. Reckon other small communities have some as well. 20 here, 20 there and soon the UDD prediction of 1 million demonstrators may come to be.

When i heard they were going to blockade CM town hall, I felt relief. It's around 10 km outside of the city just opposite the local gaol. They are fuking dumb. A sitdown at Tha Pae gate or on Nawarat Bridge would grind the city to a halt.

Giant firecrackers thrown at Chiang Mai bank, home of key political figure's relative

    CHIANG MAI,
March 16 (TNA) – Giant firecrackers were thrown at a branch of Thailand's largest commercial bank and a home belonging to the father-in-law of a key figure of a coalition party in the northern province of Chiang Mai, but there were no casualties.

Fragments of giant firecrackers were found at an ATM booth of the Bangkok Bank's Changpuek branch, which was undamaged.

In a similar attack, giant firecrackers were thrown into the home of a key figure of Bhumjaithai Party leader Newin Chidchob’s father-in-law, which is also the office of a Chiang Mai Construction company. The explosion caused a crack in the office’s door.

Police believed that the incidents were aimed to cause disturbance in Chiang Mai.

Meanwhile, in Bangkok early Tuesday, an unidentified attacker fired an M-79 grenade at the home of a businessman near the home of the Supreme Administrative Court president.

No one was wounded in the incident in the capital's Soi Lad Prao 23 at around 3am Tuesday. The roof and ceiling of the house was damaged.

The owner of the house, Worasit Kiartthawianun, an import and export businessman said he had no conflict with anyone, but his home is located about 20 metres from the home of Supreme Administrative Court president Akrathorn Chularat.

Pol. Maj-Gen. Saroj Promcharoen, commander of Police Metropolitan Division 2, said that the grenade attack may not be linked to Mr Akrathorn as his home is in Soi 25 but the house where the incident took place was in Soi 23.

Meanwhile, two soldiers wounded Monday in a grenade attack at the first Infantry Regiment on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road are in stable condition.

The attending doctors said they remained hospitalised for treatment about a week to prevent infection of their wounds.

CHIANG MAI : Political gatherings have been banned in and around areas of government offices in this northern province to prevent the red shirts' local chapter from storming and damaging government property.

Chiang Mai is the first province to prohibit protesters from organising political rallies near provincial government centre and other government buildings.

Several hundred people burn tires at Wing 21 Air Force Base and outside provincial hall. Nobody had broken in, but there was definitely an overwhelming feeling of anger. Saw one skirmish when a yellow shirt showed up. I saw lots of people chasing someone down and the protest leader was shouting at them to stop. That's when I took off.

Many videos were shown from clashes in Bangkok in recent days, including reports in English from CNN and Sky News. I was surprised to see footage even from this afternoon being shown. They cheered as homemade rockets were fired and gasped as a journalist was gunned down. At one point they showed a clip of the government talking today blaming the red shirts for violence. The crowd exploded with anger, people stood up to yell, and some plastic bottles were thrown at the screen. That video was abruptly stopped and the leader had to calm people down.
