this rail link doesnt seem so convenient for those going to the airport, but will make the journey into bkk from the airport a lot simpler, avoiding all the taxi, limo hustlers and the price fixing scams.

The systems are not interconnected, which means different trains and stations. I believe there will be a walkway between a BTS station (likely Phaya Thai) and Makkasan. So if you are coming from Sukhumvit you may have to get three trains; a BTS/MRT/Rail link combo. :)
Think of how much hassle that is going to be if you have luggage or a family in tow!
It seems I was correct, you will have to change trains and walk to different stations to use the rail link. The closest MRT is Petchaburi and the closest BTS is Phaya Thai.
Again, the systems are NOT interconnected and are only (possibly) joined by walkways.
The Express Airport Train also only runs from Makkasan so getting to Phaya Thai will require another change from an airport commuter train to an Express train, going from Phaya Thai to Makkasan. :)
So you have the choice of the following from Thong Lor:
1) BTS Thong Lor to Asok > MRT Sukhumvit to Petchburi > Makkasan Express rail link to airport.
2) BTS Thong Lor to Phaya Thai > Phaya Thai Commuter rail link to Airport (will take longer than 15 minutes as it stops at several stations on the way.
3) BTS Thong Lor to Phaya Thai > Phaya Thai Commuter rail link to Makkasan > Makkasan Express rail link to airport.
Whew!
Malako there is no thong lor stop for the link to the airport. the key to it being fast is that it is point to point. They will have a slower train that makes some stops, but none anywhere near Thong Lor.
