    Thaksin: Thailand Risks Failure

    News Asia-Pacific
    Thaksin: Thailand risks failure
Thaksin's supporters, wearing red shirts, vowed to keep their protest peaceful [EPA]
Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's former prime minister, has urged his supporters to bring him back to power, saying the country risks becoming a "failed state".
His comments on Saturday came in a live video link to about 26,000 Red Shirts rallying in the capital, Bangkok, to demand the resignation of Abhisit Vejjajiva, the current prime minister.
Three years after he was ousted in a bloodless coup, Thaksin told the crowds: "Our country has deteriorated and risks being a failed state.

"Our country has slid backwards. There is no justice in society." (Full Story:

That alone shows, how far off you are on reality. It never gets better, if a democratically elected and reelected government is kicked out.

No need to reply with that "bought vote" bullshit.

I think Thailand has been handling failure quite well for quite some time.

Police state? Are you insane? I've got no problem with disliking Thaksin but your hysteria just makes you look ignorant.

When vote-buying is the only thing that works to get the poor Isaan people on your side, Thaksin had very little choice.

There are 2 things nobody can deny:

    1) Thailand was richer and happier under Thaksin

    2) Thaksin was far more foreigner-friendly than Mark

Let's bring him back and see what he can do.

short memory DrB ? don't you remember the early police raids to NGOs, Universities (Thamasat), newspapers (BangkokPost, The Nation) when Thaksin took the helm back in late 2001 and early 2002 ? that was the great purge, but your memory probably doesn't go that far

even though, it's not the sole argument against Democracy ala Thaksin, it does show how gullible a certain population of Thailand is, and that alone should be of concern if one was to believe and defend true democracy.

ok, DrB, try to learn from real independent sources, not your usual UDD crap, see below those links from scholars, political researchers and research organizations ...

first a nice essay by a French researcher, with a quick summary of Thaksin political success: http://www.ceri-sciencespo.com/archive/mai05/focdc.pdf

then a nice article from some political institute, they did a nice job summarizing the situation: The Downfall of Thaksin Shinawatra's CEO-state — Global Collaborative

third: another report from the lovely and compassionate Thaksin against Burma refugees NGOs

^None of those have anything to do with police-state raids. Where's the evidence for raids on NGOs, Campuses? Do you know what a police raid is, Butterfly? Do you even know what a raid is? Of course you do, you just prefer to lie.

^ will find them, don't worry, yes a police raid, I am sure you will dishonestly discount them as soon as they will expose your complete ignorance of recent Thai politics

maybe you should focus on the ancient news

did you read the long article from that institute ? they seem pretty accurate in terms of historical events, you will probably learn a lot from it

PS: here is the link in case you conveniently forgot : The Downfall of Thaksin Shinawatra's CEO-state — Global Collaborative

Please do find them, I'm surprised you're having so much trouble finding them that you have to post unrelated articles. Also note that you said "raids", that's a plural. So you need to post your evidence of numerous physical raids orchestrated by Thaksin on press premises, campuses, and the offices of NGOs in late 2001/early 2002.

I really don't know why you bother with this mendacious claptrap when the real evidence for Thaksin's thuggery, crookedness, and brutality is so overwhelming. Is it that you're so allergic to the truth that even when it supports your case you have to avoid it?

yes multiple raids together: campus, news room, and NGOs

I am sure you will start bitching and be all apologistic for your king Thaksin, like a battered wife

in the early days, there was still freedom of press, but after the few raids, the message was clear, and auto-censure was key. Of course, for the weak and lazy mind, they don't bother going that far back, it could expose the truth and their intellectual laziness

The other bizarre thing is that Butterfly just invents the wrongs he talks about. When talking about a period when the Thaksin government was killing journalists and intimidating press owners and editors, when they were applying pressure to everybody who disagreed with TRT, I don't see the need to just invent stuff the way Butterfly does. Especially when the reality was as bad as it was.

Thaksin come back and take power, with the hatred of him among a significant part of the population, suspicion of him amongst even a larger part, and his opposition knowing what kind of scores he'd be looking to settle- the kind of scores he would surely try to settle? I detest the Panthamit, but let's not forget whom we're dealing with here. The best his supporters can- or even should- hope for is that he makes it back one day as some kind of eminence grise. Otherwise, the idea that he could come back without a fight is crazy. It would tear the country apart, and for what? So another small man could find his balcony in SE Asia? Replacing one cult of personality with another, and this one without any moral or spiritual authority whatsoever. Really bad idea. I like my idea better.
