Less risk in Isaan and havent heard of a attack on any farang for many many years, but last year they targeted farang homes, druging them with gas before going throught the house.

Both guys that were gased are mates of mine, The first had a new born baby and were all a sleep in the same room, woke up in the morning to find the whole house and bed room had been ransacked, The other same thing and they even made them selfs a feed in the kitchen.
Both houses were one story and had the windows open, and didnt own a dog so I guess they are easy targets. They didnt try my house due to a lot of dogs and more people living there as well two story with windows closed

When we lived in phunphin the front gate was always locked at night. And bars on every window.

Knew a guy by the name of fast eddie, was a regular at a notorious chch pub (His lordships for those who know it)
Has so far been the only person whose mere presence has scared the fark outta me.

If I return to my home, at that hour, and found motor bikes outside and the lights on, I would certainly not rush in. I would call the police. I am more concerned with my own safety than with my property, and so, I am more worried about people breaking in, while I am there. But, I don’t keep flashy stuff there either. Thieves at my place would have to be content with a TV and a computer, unless they were the educated sort and liked books.

I wonder what security he had. It certainly makes me think about mine; infra red intruder sensors etc. However this unfortunate man’s vulnerability seems to be twofold, One, he kept expensive stuff on show, Two, he, allegedly, brought prostitutes back. Anyone taking prostitutes back to their own home is inviting trouble, since they often have links with crooks. However, workmen, gardeners and maids etc can also pass on information to criminals also.

Whatever the gang of winging farangs says, Pattaya remains a safer place than most European or American cities and those who take reasonable care should be all right.
I hope Mr. Starbeck makes a quick recovery, poor man!.

Theft so much a part of life here. It's always going at my place of employment, a private school. Twice (that I know about, it's probably happened many times before) they were victimized by a ring of thieves known as security guards.

Another common story is of houses being completely emptied - furniture, refrigerator, kid's bikes, everything. Heard of this happening quite a few times from the parents.

Re the suggestions he should have had a gun or a baseball bat to defend his property, -- black market hand guns are easily available in Thailand and many young criminals carry them. Not a good idea to walk into a potential shootout over a few hundred thousand baht.

Our property is in a quiet Thai neighbourhood at Sattahip 20 minutes south of Pattaya. Its a friendly little community where everyone knows everyone else.
But at night time there can be rowdy parties and young bucks on big motorbikes disturbing the peace. I noticed every place in the neighbourhood had high fences and many kept guard dogs. Some of the older places have high block walls with broken glass embedded in concrete on the top. None of the houses have security bars on the windows though.

I figure the risk of home invasion is fairly low since we will be having Thai family staying with us, plus security screens and burglar alarms.

The biggest risk I see is getting mugged while walking the 500 meters or so between the house and the highway. I certainly wont be doing that at night.

My first thought after reading the article was also why the heck the guy rushed in while there were obviously at least 2 guys in his house . . .

Sit back, get the cops, write down the license plate numbers . . . no headache in the morning.

Good way to disable motor cycles is a bit of twig in the key hole! Slows them righr down without any major damage if they are mates or something. Did it once to a plain police car in the U.K. They were not amused but couldn't do me for criminal damage.:UK:
