National Geographical Clip on Stray Dogs, BKK

Appears to be a sly promo for Soi Cats and Dogs in BKK. Maybe some more attention from the international community would get the authorities (or temples) to get a nationwide spay and neuter program off the ground.

I liked the puppy, right at the end.

I wouldn't want to deny him the opportunity to exist...

I agree that somethning must be done though, like giving more money to the monks for the food.

I've seen them on a TV show about rabies. There was a story of a man from northern Thailand who went to BKK to work to make some money for his wedding. He was bitten by a rabid dog and died, unaware of the fact that he could get rabies shots for free.

There was a vet who would volunteer in the Philippines to make sure all dogs are vacinated, but he didn't say anything about a program like this in BKK. When I lived in Muangthong, there were vans that came around and picked dogs up for spaying and neutering. They would also vaccinate them.

I think these programs are limited to certain areas and with the high numbers of soi dogs, ut can be difficult to keep things under control. Education is the first step.

More money for food ? You must be crazy. Well-intentioned buddhists who feed those dogs but don't take care of them are one of the problems! Like old grannies feeding pigeons.

I used to leave near the beach in Banchang, Rayong, near a large temple. Thai people used to drive down there to throw their obviously outmoded dogs out of the car, for someone else to take care of.... (I could say roughly the same about kids at a large orphange near Maptaphut).
It was a bit upsetting to see the poor mutts running up and down the road after being abandoned by their fukcwit "owners", who obviously did'nt realise that live animals need to piss / shit / exercise to co-exist with humans. Or have lost their "cute" puppy looks. Local authorities should start with the temples, and fund a neutering program for strays. The word might eventually filter out to other dog owners to have their dogs neutered, but I'm not holding my breath.

Feeding them is better than letting them end up skin and bone. Some people do look after them too as in our soi. The owner of a restaurant spends thousands taking dogs to the vets to get them neutered and vaccinated, also bought collars for them all so that the vans do not take them. I feed them most nights with the odd look chin.

    A kind soul.

If Thailand politicos put as much energy into solving this issue as they do, let's say, paying people to vote--then things would turn around in a heartbeat.

Ok, feeding neutered dogs with a collar is an entirely different thing. But as with all animals additional feeding only results in more puppies. Therefore the worst thing to do is to feed soi dogs because you only aggravate the problem. Keep the population under control and feed the remaining, healthy dogs.

Korea apparently does great soup...(horrible gits)

Now, this may seem cynical but Thai's don't like bad news/press anything that breaks up their 'sanook' day..so after this..the likely hood is that they'll be rounded up and culled...let's not beat about the bush..they say they are Buddhist...I would say most of them are NOT!!!! in my 6yrs here I have seen some of the worst human behaviour towards animals in my life...

Once when I lived in Samui I was driving my bike up to my house and watched a man with his mother! on the back of his faggoty ass 'Mio' m/bike ride towards a small dog that heard his bike coming and moved in to the scrub by the side of the rode...This ingrate then proceeded to drive towards this dog and stamp his foot down on the back of it's head...with great force..my wife (Thai) and I were both horrified..I screamed after him that I would like to do the same to him...he just laughed....

I say the new slogan should be 'Neuter Thai's and save life' instead of 'Save world save life' cause it's a damn good start....by the way in my opinion it is mostly thai men that animals especially dogs seem to hate...even for know reason sometimes...six sense these dogs...thai men...2 senses if they are lucky!!!!

Couldn't agree more with your posts on this thread, plorf. You're 100% correct & that is precisely the way that SCAD, we & other orgs work. If you're feeding unneutered dogs you're creating a problem. Keep dogs in their community keep them healthy, but stop them breeding!

Nietzsche, yep the pup is cute. Ever seen one starve to death? Or killed by bigger dogs? Or worse, paralysed by bigger dogs? Ever seen them with parvo or distemper or E Canis? Infested by maggots? I have. All of the above. That's what happens when animals breed indiscriminately aided by man, but not helped by him (ie we provide the scraps that keep them just healthy enough to breed, but do nothing else). This isn't a Disney movie. This is real life. In real life, Lady & the Tramp have mange & malnutrition.

It's looking more and more likely that we will be solving this problem in the very near future.

In my earlier days in Samui I saw a dog that looked like (and probably had been) beaten hard with a meat cleaver...

It was the first time I'd seen anything of the sort. Nothing surprises me now.

Very well said, NR. I am always shocked at all the stray dogs running around, when I visit Thailand. I visited a shelter in Phuket, and saw the difference that places like that can do to help these strays. I hope this video will bring awareness, and possible help to more of these dogs/cats.

I have seen bullet holes, skin diseases, and many other afflictions that human neglect can do to these animals.

The temple's dog condominium houses 700 of the animals and spends 1,500 US dollars a week feeding them.
    Talk about screwed up priorities.

Actually UR correct Mr Sole. And this was a very efficient way for cleaning up the stry dogs in the street problem that existed in Seoul back in the late 60's and early 70's. The eating of dog soup, marketed through the myth that it was an aphrodisiac, resulted in mostly men eating the dog soup in the pochang ma cha's and maklie houses after work. This practice not only had an impact on clearing up the stray dog problem but fed a lot of hungry and under nurished people during a time when Korea was not at all prosperous like it is today.

Ah leave it to the farang...they're stupid soft hearts...

A Thai guy on Samui tried to explain to me that the reason why they treat dogs and animals so badly was and I quote....
"They have been born into a lower life form, so they have done something wrong in a previous life. So they deserve beatings"

Dude your a lower life form!!! I wanted to say... This prick reckoned he and other Thai's that believe this are good Buddhists.... This goes against Buddhist doctrines..
We are all born into lower realms and make our way up the ladder to Nirvana!!!! What an arse he felt when my wife showed him Buddhist scripture from a Tibetan Buddhist book translatd into Thai!!!! He said that was different Buddhism.....Are the Thai only excuse....sorry the Buddha had time to make you a specific type of Buddhism. Where you can abuse and kill what you want....How ignorant of me not to realise that the Buddha had done that for you SPECIAL people.....

Personally I'd rather have a bunch of dog friends than Thai ones....or is that just me?????

In contemporary times, the English are the most assosiated race with dog baiting, they pursued it with utmost earnestness, when it was barely known elsewhere in the world. For over six hundred years the pastime flourished, reaching the peak of its popularity during the sixteenth century.
