This place amazes me sometimes; you either love animals and respect life or you don't. The true irony is despite their looks, pandas are actually vicious and useless creatures.

Given that they fleece farang and thai for extra cash over and above the normal zoo entrance fee, I'm sure this is a purely economic decision.

They'll lose a nice little earner when her work permit expires.

BANGKOK, June 27 (Xinhua) -- The three-year-old female panda, Lin Ping, on Wednesday chose Germany and Spain as the teams to compete in the final match of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.

On the occasion of the famous panda's birthday party, Chiang Mai Zoo in the North prepared balls and national flags of Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy -- the national teams competing in the upcoming semi-final matches.

If Lin Ping's prediction turns out to be correct, the panda will predict the result of the Euro 2012 final match as well, said Prasertsak Boontrakulpuntawee, chief of the zoo's panda research project.

In 2010, the Thai-born panda correctly predicted that Spain would win the World Cup, according to the zoo.

Lin Ping is the first panda to be born in Thailand. Like her parents -- Lin Hui and Xuang Xuang -- Lin Ping is considered as a property of China.

Female panda Lin Hui and male panda Xuang Xuang have been on loan from China to Chiang Mai Zoo since 2003, as part of a panda research program.

The loan agreement will see the two pandas and their offspring returned to China after 10 years.

If she's born in Thailand they should give her a passport and tell China to f*** off. Or perhaps they should have kept her in a cupboard, and then when they'd returned the others say "Oh look, we just found one of our own living in Mae Sa!".

They just haven't thought it through.

Thailand-Born Panda To Be Returned To China

CHIANG MAI, April 11 (Bernama) -- Lin Ping, a female panda born at Chiang Mai Zoo in Thai North, is to be sent to Chengdu in China, as a deal on her three-year extended stay in Thailand ends in May 2013, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.

Permanent Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment Chote Trachu told journalists on Thursday that Lin Ping, now three years and 11 months old, needs to be back to China for mating, as reasoned by the Chinese authorities.

Chote said, however, that China will likely agree to Thailand's request that Lin Ping's offspring be sent to live with its grandparents, Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui, at Chiang Mai Zoo.

According to the senior official, two Thai caretakers will accompany Lin Ping during her journey and stay in China.

Lin Ping is the first-ever panda born in Thailand from a panda couple, also lent by China, Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui, whose stay at the Chiang Mai Zoo has also been extended.

Lin Ping is the first-ever panda born in Thailand from a panda couple,
So they've had a panda born in Thailand from a non-panda couple?

I bet the non-panda couple has that on display so all the dumb locals can come around and pay homage (and a few baht) to see it!!

Thailand’s celebrity panda at center of multimillion-dollar deal with China
    Friday, May 10

In this photo taken May 2, 2013, Lin Ping, a four-year-old Panda chews bamboo at Chiang Mai zoo in Chiang Mai province, northern Thailand.

A breakthrough was announced Friday, May 10, 2013 when the Chinese Embassy informed Thai authorities that Lin Ping can stay in Thailand until October, said Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul.

Lin Ping will then relocate to China, where authorities will find her a male partner, and the two will be allowed to return to Thailand to mate, he said.
    (Wichsi Taprieu/ Associated Press )

Once the star of a Thai reality show, the panda’s future has been a topic of high-level negotiation for months. Last year, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra asked then-Chinese premier Wen Jiabao to consider extending the panda’s loan contract which ends on its 4th birthday, May 27.

A breakthrough was announced Friday, when the Chinese Embassy informed Thai authorities that Lin Ping can stay in Thailand until October, said Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul. Lin Ping will then relocate to China, where authorities will find her a male partner, and the two will be allowed to return to Thailand to mate, he said.

“Normally every baby panda born overseas must return to China to breed,” Surapong said, but the Chinese made an exception due to close bilateral ties with Thailand.

Lin Ping was born in Thailand’s Chiang Mai Zoo to two adult pandas that were on loan from China. Her birth was front-page news in Thailand and the panda family starred in a much-loved but lethargic reality show that broadcast live from the pandas’ zoo habitat for almost three years.

China has not set a date for Lin Ping’s return to Thailand but will try to ensure it is within a year, Surapong said. She will be allowed to remain in Thailand for up to 15 years, at a cost of $1 million per year, said Surapong.

“The new fee is four times higher,” he said. The old contract called for a $250,000 panda loan fee. “But (we) can accept that.”

Get a small, lazy polar bear. Paint that fkkr black around the eyes and everywhere but its tummy. Send it back to China. Chinese zoo will be cool with it, since the public won't know the difference, anyway. I mean, if they can't tell a large dog from a lion...

Thailand's adored giant panda searches for love in China
    Sep 28, 2013

BANGKOK (AFP) - A celebrity panda, whose exploits were avidly followed in Thailand on a 24-hour television channel, left the kingdom on Saturday in search of a mate in China, her zookeeper said.

Linping, who has drawn around 2.5 million people to Chiang Mai Zoo since she was born in 2009, was flown from the northern Thai city for China's Chengdu where she will meet six male giant pandas within her age range.

More than 200 adoring Thai fans accompanied the bear on a Thai Airways flight to China, where she will set up temporary home in the Wolong nature reserve.

"She will be in China for one year to select her mate," said Mr Tanapattara Pongpamorn, director of Chiang Mai zoo.

    Urgent: Panda Lin Hui conceives
    December 29, 2013

The Chiang Mai Zoo announced Sunday that its team of veterinarians successfully conducted artificial insemination on Lin Hui, making it conceive.

The zoo announced that Lin Hui is scheduled to deliver next month, Channel 3 reported.

Lin Hui and its mate, Chuang Chuang, are two Giant Pandas from Sichuan, China on loan to Chiang Mai Zoo in Chiang Mai.

Earlier, Lin Hui has given birth to Lin Ping, which is now choosing its mate in China.

Lin Hui builds a nest as birth draws nearer
    January 2, 2014

Chiang Mai Zoo veterinarians are still unable to confirm if giant panda Lin Hui is carrying twins, as the ultra-sound reading remains unclear.

The zoo had earlier announced that Lin Hui was pregnant and would give birth around the middle of January.

Vet Thewarat Wetchamanas said there is still a chance that Lin Hui could have twins although the test has detected only one embryo.

Lin Hui's fetus confirmed intact; delivery date uncertain
    Namo Vananupong

BANGKOK, 29 January 2014 (NNT) – Chiang Mai Zoo officials said on Tuesday Lin Hui the panda did not have a miscarriage and that ultrasound confirmed the fetus was in a good state.

According to Dr. Bariphat Siri-arunrat, head of the panda reproduction research team at Chiang Mai Zoo, an ultrasound scan on Lin Hui has succeeded in locating a complete fetus that looks in good health. The embryo sack also contains amniotic fluid as it should.

The experts said the fetus's pulse was not detected, but this was not of concern because it was usually detected when nearing delivery. The fetus was found to be 7 centimeters in length.

Dr. Bariphat said Lin Hui was 121 day pregnant as of Tuesday, and that usually pandas gave birth around the 130th day. However, it was difficult to ascertain when Lin Hui would deliver, citing an example of a case in China where a panda was pregnant for 324 days.

Alarm over miscarriage had been raised recently after Lin Hui did not go into labor at the time zoo officials initially expected.

Pregnant giant panda in Thailand miscarries, says zoo
    Feb 04, 2014

This Chiang Mai Zoo handout photo taken on Dec 26, 2013 shows Thai veterinarians performing an ultrasound on 12-year-old Panda Lin Hui (right) in northern Thailand's Chiang Mai Zoo. A zoo in northern Thailand said on Tuesday, Feb 4, 2014, a pregnant giant panda in its care had suffered a miscarriage, quashing hopes of the birth of a second cub in the panda-mad country.

BANGKOK(AFP) - A zoo in northern Thailand said on Tuesday a pregnant giant panda in its care had suffered a miscarriage, quashing hopes of the birth of a second cub in the panda-mad country.

Chiang Mai Zoo said 12-year-old Lin Hui, one of Thailand's two famously celibate pandas who became pregnant thanks to artificial insemination, appeared to have lost the cub after 128 days of gestation.

"I think she has not realised that she has miscarried," Mr Boripat Siriaroonrat, a member of the zoo's panda project, told AFP.

Lin Hui and her mate Chuang Chuang, who are on loan from China, produced a first cub in 2009, after artificial insemination succeeded where attempts to get them to mate using pornography and low-carb diets failed.
