Thailand : Clouds of acrid smoke from 'cursing ritual' greet PM Abhisit

Clouds of acrid smoke from 'cursing ritual' greet PM Abhisit

BANGKOK, Jan 16 (TNA) - A dozen anti-government 'Red Shirt' protesters performed a cursing ritual by roasting chilli and salt to greet Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at the headquarters of the Teachers Council Friday morning.

The apparent spin-off group of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), calling itself the Sanam Luang Democracy Group, roasted the chilis and salt just outside the Teachers Council headquarters and succeeded only in irritating a group of teachers, some with bouquets in their hands, with the strongly unpleasant smell and acrid smoke.

The teachers, who were waiting to receive Mr Abhisit metres away from the roasting scene, looked frustrated and shouted words of support for the visiting premier. Mr. Abhisit was quickly ushered into the auditorium to deliver his speech marking Teachers Day and was closely flanked by security guards to leave in a van for Government House nearby.

The anti-Abhisit protesters said they were no longer using eggs to hurl at the premier or any other Democrats who may show up in public anywhere for fear of raising food prices. They said they would instead turn to such traditional cursing rituals.

In the other corner, the yellow team (PAD) leader Sonthi recently had a ceremony cursing Thaksin, that involved the used sanitary towels of female followers arranged around some portrait of an old King...

I guess you must have missed the part where the army rolled tanks and armed soldiers onto the streets and took control of government. Or the part where the PAD (supported by the army) occupied government buildings and two airports in a paramilitary operation aimed at ousting the sitting government.

The Democrats, PAD, the army and the ruling class elite (which includes the judiciary) have a synonymous agenda to impose an oligarchist political rule over the people of Thailand. --- Something much closer to an absolute dictatorship than Thaksins leadership endorsed by the majority of voters ever was.

I would therefore suggest dear Bones that you are far more of a clueless moron than the people you accuse.

'Thaksin {the closest thing Thailand has had to a dictator}' You are obviously oblivious and ignorant of contemporary Thailand history {last 60 years}. LOS has been one big series of military and Fascist dictatorships for this many years. With perhaps a couple of token and guised civil governments that are always extremely short-lived. Even our new boy PM should be under suspect. There will never be true democratic principles as long as we have a undertone of 'that' rule.

What about the military dictatorships that dominated Thai politics from 1932 to the 70's?

Your comment is not only incredibly naive, it's also offensive to those that lived and perished struggling against these regimes.

You are kidding, right? Ever heard of this guy, for example? Luang Pibul Songgram: Biography from Answers.com

"In Thailand: A Short History, David K. Wyatt wrote that during Songgram's first premiership, the Thai government "was thoroughly shaped by his power and personality, much as absolute kings had done a generation earlier." However, Wyatt added, this period was also "a period of mass nationalism, not just elite nationalism, a social and political phenomenon that was more nearly egalitarian in its implications than it could have been earlier under a monarchist psychology.""

I think accusations of Thaksin seeking a (typically Asian) de facto one-party state are close to the mark- not exactly the same as a dictatorship, but close enough. Pibun was a would-be Mussolini. All sorts of artifacts remain from his rule, such as the national anthem (is there anyone who prefers that to the King's Anthem?).

So, the thousand of red shirt supporters, after having been reduced to hundreds, and recently less than fifty, per demonstration, have now dwindled down to barely a dozen... Oh yeah, that movement is sure gathering steam....

Actually, wait, let's make that '...barely a dozen illiterate and superstitions folks chanting curses...'

As if this could be getting any more entertaining.

Bwahahahaha! I stand corrected - it *CAN* get better and more entertaining.

Oh, now you've done it - the Blue Collar Brigades will undoubtedly be all over your ass, now lecturing you how you don't know what you are talking about, and what a great supporter of democracy Thaksin is (though there have been plenty of other dictator-like personalities previously in Thailand's past).

I know several "red shirt" supporters. They are literate and intelligent.

They are also waiting for the next election.

That is the difference between the red and yellow shirt groups.

That they are literate and intelligent, or waiting for the next election? I'm presuming you mean the latter.

Thaksin is a very very crafty, cunning fox. He stalks, he watches, he waits. But have no doubt. when he decides to strike, he is merciless, brutal, and ruthless.

Taksin is guilty of manipulating the (poor) masses through vote buying, propaganda, and policies that could never ever be sustained. the 30baht health care scheme for example. yep! sounds great! but sustainable?? NO!
Thaksin took over Thailand during a period of massive growth globally, but why did Thailands surplus dwindle away during his rule? though he and his cronies got MUCH richer!
Most educated Thais will tell you, Thailand did not prosper as much as it should have during Thaksin's rule - and corruption reached a new level.

Xenophobic policies also made life in Thailand for foreigners/foreign investors MUCH harder, and made what was one of the 'free'est countries in the world, much more difficult to live in for the average farang. Many foreign companies also uprooted and moved to places like vietnam during taksins rule.

Quite right. The majority of the poor underclass Thais may not be highly educated, but they know when they are being had.
The one thing Abhisit and his elite backers fear most is free and fair democratic elections.

Abhisit was repeatedly unable to gain political power through legitimate means and only gained power through the back door with more than a little help from the Army and illegal activities of the PAD.

It took two Court culls & some hundreds of banned top politicians to eventually almost level the playing field enough for Mark Veg & his team to get into power.

The final monetary hurdle to buy the Buriram team was relatively inexpensive compared to the numerous kickbacks awaiting he current government.

It's all turned out to be a rather disgusting fiasco.

    No they don't.

They just know when the people in power are not paying their village elders to support them (to vote).

For now, Thaksin has the vote of the uneducated (poor) North. But not through honest means. He only cares about himself, and has the poor bluffed into to thinking he cares about them... that's his tact.... one of a crafty fox..

^^ Oh please stop being so naive and biased. Abhisit and the democrats are copying and refining exactly what they've accused Thaksin of:
Buying the masses with populist handouts. Because as independant and international watch bodies have always stated: The elections were relatively free and fair, there were fewer reported cases of votebuying than ever before. And say whatever you want, the 30 Baht health care scheme was far more intelligent than just handing out 2000 Baht to pretty much everyone. 15'000 Baht is considered a good salary for most people, so they even hand out money to the middle class. Be for whoever you want, but by simply repeating what the cynic PAD propaganda machinery produced before their coming to power is just silly. Fight against corruption, save democracy, kill the dictator. What a comedy.

I'm not saying that other Thai politicians are angels plorf. corruption is ripe allover. but thaksin was a phsycotic arsehole, and had to be taken down - hence the military coup.
the most honorable thing he could do is just concentrate on being allowed back in Thailand, and forget politics altogether. but he won't do that will he..

If the Dems actually do copy Thaksins political strategy and woo the majority poor voters with populist policies it will be a victory for democracy. After all, thats the way democracy is supposed to work, and indeed works in every developed country in the free world.

However, if Abhisit goes down the road PAD are advocating by disenfranchising the poor majority with a partially appointed representation, then what we would be looking at would be a major corruption of democratic principles.

What we are witnessing now in Thailand is a struggle between new democracy and the more traditional oligarchy where the country (and the poor majority) are ruled over by a corrupt, wealthy, elite class minority.

The problem for Abhisit and his elite backers, including PAD, is that right at the moment he has some serious opposition from the masses and some not so dedicated coalition partners. Such is his fear of democratic elections in the near future. If Abhisit wants to woo the poor majority of voters in order to gain an absolute single party majority he needs to woo the poor majority in the same way Thaksin did, -- with populist policies. Thats democracy at work. In order to gain that support from the majority poor he needs to offer some sweeteners and control the media, something we are starting to see the beginnings of now.

Once Abhisit has complete single party control of Parliament without the threat of coalition defections he will have three years to renege on his political promises to the poor and institute constitutional changes to disenfranchise their voting power. All this done of course claiming a mandate from the people under free and fair democratic elections. Game over. Checkmate!

Well, thats the way I see it going down anyway.

^Agree with you there, his current actions have little to do with the Democrats intention or general views on politics, it's a mere concession for his political survival. How, when or if he can do that bend you described remains to be seen.

This concept that Thaksin only has the support of mindless fools is a totlal myth.

The genteman who owns a restaurant I used to frequent regularly explained the difference between the Democrats and Thaksin.

    A) The Democrats were in power when the economy crashed last time and had no idea how to get out of it. Oh the humiliation for Thai people of having Farangs bail them out.

    B) Thaksin comes from poor origins and thus understands poor people. Some of his schemes may fail, but others succeed. To try a dozen schemes and have six fail has to be better that to try nothing at all to help the poor, as was the case with the last Democrat government.

    C) Corruption. The Demcrats are squeaky clean? Give me a break, The entire country is corrupt. Thaksin's problem is that he isn't "one of the boys". He and the people he represents should know their place in society.

Daffy. There is a reason why Abhisit won't hold an election. He is scared of being chucked out by "the people".

I would like to address the comment made by "bones", the fact is that people, people of whom I mix with on a daily basis who are from the "North" and who certainly are not "uneducated" or "poor" for that matter, have backed Mr.Thaksin to the hilt, and that he is still regarded with love and respect
