Thaksin and His Revoked Diplomatic Passport

Enlighten me please. Wherever he happens to be {close by?}, how does this official action from the Thai government hinder his movement? This official declaration of having his Diplomatic Passport voided means what? Is this mandate observed worldwide by respected authorities? Are they forcing his hand to turn himself in?

Oh! I see. Thank you Mid. How foolish of me...his passport hasn't been cancelled, but instead, the passport staus. Ok. This makes sense. His wealth and influence might have some workings down the road.

Incorrrect assumption (unsurprisingly) - a diplomatic passport is a *passport*, a document, not the passport's status. A diplomatic passport gives the bearer certain immunities from prosecution, prevents searches at borders, and bestows certain other privileges when traveling.

When the diplomatic passport is cancelled, the bearer has to surrender it to the issuing agency (which probably won't happen), and the person will have to use their regular passport.

How long is a Thai passport valid? Won't Thaksin have to renew his passport soon? :-)

didn't they cancel his passport already 6 months ago ? I am afraid it's just an announcement with no real action behind it, a bit like a magic trick, if it's in the press then it must be true, even if it's not

My friend has a diplomatic passport.

According to him, it is only protocol to use it when entering the country where you aew based. He works at the UK Embassy in Thailand so he uses it to enter Thailand. When I went to Singapore with him, he used a non diplomatic passport to enter because it is against protocol.

Of course he isn't an ex PM, and Thaksin wasn't based anywhere, so maybe the protocol is different. if not, Old square head would have made it so to suit his own agenda. That's his style isn't it?

It is not, actually. He can enter any country with a diplomatic passport but has no diplomatic credentials.
Some diplomats do, however, carry both their dips and normal passports when traveling.

We always only carried the dip ones, easier than keeping an eye on two sets.

Throughout my youth, I was continuously issueed 2 passports {one diplomatic} because of my Father's business and the amount of travel - even for his children, considered dependents in this case.

I would be very surprised if he has not purchased legal and effective citizenship/residency with another country, and even with diplomatic privileges to include visa free travel. These are legal, available on the open market, and he's too shrewd to ignore the option.

In Taksin's case, the revocation of his diplomatic passport may prove interesting. I believe there is still a warrant for his arrest issued in the U.S. over one of his earlier business deals where he ripped off his American partner(s). I'm pretty sure he can't travel to the U.S. as a private citizen but I don't know about extradition from other countries.
