Chitardo, maybe the grunts are out there for the nation. You wouldn't know what that means. You live in some fantasy land. Are you tied to your bed or something?

Gaudente, you are the person who is the idiot. You can't take a joke. The pathetic people are the people who think that PAD protestors are out there for 200baht a day. Are you one of these pathetic posters?
Being called pathetic by an idiot like you is another confirmation of my brightness.
And btw, it's true that the PAD pawns are not out there just for the 200 baht and the whisky, they also enjoy feeling important and "heroic", but this does not mean they are not the total brainless pricks they are

Most of us are not government or PAD supporters, most of us have a family and live here. Some of us have been here for many years and we try to understand what is going on.

I am not looking forward to my third coup here. I worry for the future and safety of my wife and kids.

What PAD have done is nothing more or less than act of terrorism.

Agreed. Can we stop this thread from degenerating into a slanging match and keep it on topic as per the OP?

    More news on the coup

It's tough situation to get out of. Of course, I don't want this either. Who would? I just want to see the end. To say that all the fault lies on the PAD is totally wrong. Some people would say the PPP aka TRT are terrorists in many ways. They weren't stopped when people were dying in the hundreds before. Each side has its view. It's too bad that the law and courts are as corruptable as the rest of Thailand.

I'm finished for today. I hope this is resolved by tomorrow morning. Goodnight friends and foes.

Ask her if she is proud that she was partly responsible for the deaths of inoccent people, the disruption of millions of peoples lives, the loss of so much money and the negative image she has help instal on Thailand and the Thai people.

Please, ask her if she is proud of what she is a part of.

Saw Somchai drive back to his place near CM after the TV interview earlier. No time to stop and talk to the red-shirts 'protecting' the entrance, so no photo ....

A point on all the stuff about who paid who what.

The grassroots red-shirt supporters come in the main from a pretty impoverished sector of Thai society. The fact is without a couple of hundred baht they couldn't demonstrate even if they wanted to. Day-today survival is still a major concern for a big proportion of Thais, and it's clear that PAD can muster somewhat less needy support.

In Chiang Mai there is increasingly a sense of this becoming a class war, a north-south divide too in some ways. Whatever his sins Thaksin was the first to introduce policies to the direct benefit of the less privileged, and no coup, no disbanding of yet another political party, will force that particular genie back into the bottle.

While people complain about vote-rigging and malpractice etc with respect to the former Thai Rak Thai party leader, the PAD leaders and their backers are hardly whiter than white. However this all seems to get glossed over in the current polemics. In the corruption stakes between Thaksin and the powerful backers of the ironically named PAD, it would be tough to choose a winner.

The bottom line is that it is in the interests of a certain very powerful sector of society for the impoverished and uneducated to remain impoverished and uneducated. No stunning revelations there - it's been the same situation anywhere around the world for eons.

How are the red-shirts surviving right now? How can they afford to be out on the streets? This is how...

There is a LOT of sympathy for the cause. Passers-by, on foot, in cars, donating cash and food all day long at the pro-government headquarters in Chiang Mai.

A lot of the PAD are the students from the 1973 and 1976 events who are adults. These people are out there for their beliefs.

Janda, I don't know who you know. So I can't say much about that. I have met plenty of PAD people. I won't say I know everything that is going on but I can say that the bulk of the people out there aren't paid to be there. They may get food or possibly 'new' shirts to replace the one they bought after being there for days but no money.
Rattanaburi, I am directing this at you. You have included me amongst the others that you have called pathetic. Check your facts, I am face to face with lots of Thais each and everyday (including dye in the wool PADs), so I have it first hand that they are not losing any money. I already have a very big dislike for your name calling. Please stick to the jokes, fun and serious discussion that goes on here. So if you care that I have a better opinion of you, reframe from using a shotgun approach and including me.

You have done a great job of documenting the difference between the PPP AND PAD, I really believe everyone knows that the poor will not allow themselves to have their vote taken away.
People need to realize that the bulk of the army comes from approx. 200,000 poor young people who come from poor rural areas.
