Taken from PCN-
The fire started at 9.30pm tonite and is thought to have been caused by an electrical fault in one of the main neon signs at the front of the club. The fire spread quickly throughout the building and rescue workers had to demolish a wall to get to persons trapped inside. There are 7 confirmed dead and 58 injured. Some of those injured are expected to die.
One female died at the scene, one died at the Pattaya International Hospital with Five were pronounced dead at the Pattaya Memorial Hospital.
I expect the dead and injured figures to change tommorow (Monday). A full report will be on the PCN website tommorow.

BREAKING NEWSMassive Fire at Route 999 in North Pattaya, 8 dead and 58 injured.

Sunday 7th May 2006
Police and rescue workers were called to the Route 999 Pub located at the North end of Pattaya Third Road at around 21.00 on Sunday Evening after reports of a rapidly spreading fire and persons trapped inside were received. Every available rescue unit along with units from the Pattaya Fire Brigade responded and arrived at the scene to find the front of the club completely engulfed in flames. It was decided to collapse part of the front wall to assist injured people who were trapped inside. After the wall was taken away, many people were found unconscious on the floor through excess smoke inhalation and were found mostly at the front live band bar area. One female was found burnt to death inside the club and the rest were taken out to various hospitals around the Pattaya and Chonburi Area who were all put on red alert. Arriving at the scene, as injured people were being taken out, included Pattaya's Mayor, Khun Niran who was joined by senior Pattaya Police Officers. Police Lieutenant General Jongrak, the Region 2 Commander of Police has arrived at the scene along with the Governor of Chonburi, Khun Pisit. The injured were taken to the Pattaya Memorial, Pattaya International, Banglamung Hospital and the Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital. One person was transported to the burns unit at Chonburi Hospital but died on the way. The current figures indicate 8 people have died and at least 70 people have been injured. Initial reports of an electrical fault on an external sign have now been revised to an electrical fault with a neon sign inside the front bar which features live bands. We have also had it confirmed that the back door which was the only exit at the back of the club was locked which hampered rescue efforts and at the time of the fire, a staff meeting was taking place in the front club. Details are coming in all the time and a press conference has been called for 10am on Monday Morning. Please check back for further updates. Below are the first pictures to come from the scene and are exclusive to Pattaya City News.

locked fire exit.
wankers
Not "wankers", Dave, "bastards". The owners/management should be made to pay for this, big time!Originally Posted by davethailand
Yes, if we can assume that the back door was intended as fire exit..
But this is not typical Thai neglectance, it is worldwide.
A door is a door when theres a fire,Originally Posted by lom
In most cases it would of been a fire exit which could be opened in an emrgency.
