Chilli pepper, in this day and age of instant communication this kind of 'mistakes' happen everyday, all over the world.

Editor back in the office wants a story, NOW. Journalist is in the middle of the protests, a bomb has just gone off, someone is dead and a bystander says they think it was a woman sitting in the car. There is your story. That is of course until 30 mins later a policeman says it is a man. Which is of course 30 mins before a witness comes forward and says he was standing outside the car....etc etc.

At the same time of watching this unfold I have been following a plane incident in Australia. Same thing. 50 hurt, not 40, no 30, mechanical problem, no turbulence etc etc.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

Thai army deployed to quell protests

Thailand deployed troops to quell anti-government protests in Bangkok that left at least 278 people hurt as months of political turmoil boiled over into violence.
There were scenes of chaos outside Bangkok's parliament on Tuesday as police fired tear gas into the crowd of thousands, sending bloody protesters fleeing, while angry mobs tried to overturn police vehicles, an AFP correspondent saw.
Two Thai police officers were shot and wounded in the unrest, witnesses said, which capped months of demonstrations aimed at removing Thailand's elected government because of its ties to ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
A man was killed in a car bombing near the protest site, police said, although they said it was unclear if the blast was directly linked to the violence. Police had earlier identified the victim as a woman.
"We have been asked by the police to help maintain law and order," army spokesman Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd told AFP, without specifying how many soldiers had been deployed.
"The troops that are out are unarmed. Troops are coming from three armed forces - army, navy and air force."
Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat - who has only been in his position for three weeks - said he would not declare a state of emergency or resign as the protests escalated.
"I will continue my work," he told reporters. When asked about emergency rule, Somchai said he was "not thinking of that at all".
Government medical officials said 21 people had suffered serious injuries as police tried to disperse several thousand protesters surrounding parliament to try to prevent Somchai from giving his first policy speech.
The address went ahead but the special parliamentary session ended after two hours and protesters blockaded lawmakers inside, forcing Somchai and five aides to climb over a fence to escape the mob, an AFP correspondent said.
At about 4.15pm (2015 AEDT), police fired off a third rally of tear gas to disperse about 8,000 protesters and create an exit for the trapped politicians, who hurried out of the building and drove away in waiting cars.
The political turmoil began in late May when protesters launched their campaign to overthrow the government because of its ties to Thaksin, who was ousted in a September 2006 coup.
Supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) stormed Bangkok's main government compound on August 26 and have been barricaded there since, also protesting the government's plans to amend the constitution.
Late Monday, thousands heeded a call from a protest leader to march on parliament for a "final battle."
One of Thailand's five deputy prime ministers, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, resigned over the crackdown, saying his role as chief negotiator with the protesters had been compromised.
One man had his left foot amputated after being injured in the unrest.
Parliament went ahead with its session on Tuesday despite a boycott by the opposition Democrat Party in protest against the crackdown.
Somchai said in his speech that his new administration was "determined to create national reconciliation".
Thai media, meanwhile, announced that Queen Sirikit was donating 100,000 baht ($A4,230) to pay medical expenses for the wounded protesters, who claim they are carrying out their campaign out of loyalty to the palace.
The People Power Party won elections in December last year that marked the end of military rule brought in by the 2006 coup, but the old power elite in the palace and military resented the return to power of Thaksin's allies.
Former prime minister Samak Sundaravej was forced from office in September, after a court ruled he had accepted illegal payments for a TV show, and his successor Somchai formed his new government last month.

After viewing the pictures I liken the mayhem shown and injuries sustained to those that happen every Songkran festival.

With a heavy heart I am not looking forward to what may happen in the coming days here.

What PAD are basically saying is that half the population can't be trusted with a vote. They want to scrap one vote, one person democracy and have a percentage of PMs appointed. Who will do the appointing? The entrenched money clique, of course. A giant step backwards.
No sympathy for PAD. If they want change, they should form a political party, put forward their case and let the people decide via the ballot box.

well Thailand is a democracy, flawed or not, and the police are part of that democracy. The police are therefore a democratic force

If you want PAD in, then maybe you would be right, as PAD are not interested in democracy

so try posting your red remarks in the open forum so they can be shot down, rather than just being cowardly

^been there since yesterday PM around 3 I think. As I mentioned earlier the Embassies are right into it as the note from the US arrived last evening.

This will serve to totally destroy any hope of a decent 'season' for a bunch of folks that really could care less about PAD or anything other than putting food on the table for their families... Sooo sad

A friend's sister and family booked tickets on Monday for a 3 -4 week visit to 'see' Thailand. The better hotels resorts etc., now up in the air. Bet their plans change significantly.

Thai Pom was recently in Hong Kong (as he is today) and was repeatedly querried about the conditions in Bangkok and how dangerous was it. At the time (three weeks ago) he tried to explain that it really didn't affect most folks. Now, with these latest happenings I wonder what the Hong Kongese will think.

Asians are an ever increasing factor in tourism and the Chinese are particularly concerned over personal security issues. Time will tell.

Some very interesting photos on Prachathai of the chap who allegedly lost his leg and earlier photos (compare and contrast) of one-legged PAD supporters at the demos. Considering the amount of lies, stupidity, hypocrisy, and unadulterated cynicism surrounding this whole ridiculous clusterfuck I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out that the "martyred hero" was a one-legged man who got whacked on his stump.

Yeah, about that... I think someone else mentioned it earlier, and maybe on another thread (Texpat?). I have no experience with combat, emergency response, or anything at all involving severed or blown-off limbs. That being said, I have seen a lot of movies...

The one round of pics with the guy missing a leg that have made the rounds seem okay. But I saw some video footage at lunch today (on the Sondhi channel) that looked to be taken at night on a broad boulevard in Bangkok. There was another one-legged man in a median. It just seemed a little... fake, I guess. I don't know, can a person remain conscious and sitting up after getting a leg blown off? I'm sure it's possible but I have my doubts. As has been stated previously, there's so much bullshit flying around that it's hard to know what to think.

Thanks for the link. I'll check out the photos...

time is already telling...... the drop off is immense based on the sales numbers and just plain tourist numbers that normally book tours. my wife works in that industry at the airport and it's dreadful , it was making a small come back from the previous airport closings which sparked a massive panic but now it seems doomed...
