Pattaya - Thai Man Robbed by Police Impersonators

    Man Robbed by Police Impersonators

A young Thai man, Mr. Virapon walked into Pattaya Police Station on the morning of the 1st July to report that he had been robbed by two men dressed in official style uniforms impersonating police officers.

He stated that they pulled him over on North Road to make a search. As they could not find anything illegal they demanded he take them to his home for further searching. However, on the way, they stopped in a dimly lit and deserted area and robbed him of his belongings.

We have police impersonators here too but they usually just stop traffic and demand money.

Some bullshit it is. I got hustled by the bib 2x this weekend. End of month blues I guess. 600B total for allegedly driving in a bus lane for the 1st one and I have no idea what for the 2nd. The first one held my drivers license and followed me to an atm. Fcking ridiculous.

What happens if you refuse to pay and demand a paper ticket?

I have heard of some Farangs calling the cops bluff and supposedly getting away with it. But I wouldn't try it myself. Too easy for them to pull out a bag of yabba pills and say they found it under your seat.

Just another reason why I wont be driving in Thailand.

My normal driver when I go on holiday is a middle ranking Army dude. The Army pass is a sticker on the windscreen and he leaves his cap on the dashboard.
Its funny when we get pulled up by the BIB, as when they realize he is army they snap to attention, salute him and wave him on.

We had this a few months ago. Pulled over and demanded ThB 1,000 for having a Farang in the car. THAT was the reason given and the girl wanted to write to the television stations, the newspapers and everyone. When she initially refused the response was that we could always come to the station, and wait a few hours while they thought of something, and I don't doubt it would all have been a lot more expensive.

I opened my wallet, took out around ThB 15,000 in notes, intentionally looked through them for the oldest one and then used it to clean my shoes before handing it over. I was not, after all, the one who was going to try spending it.
I see fish. They are everywhere. They don't know they are fish.

if the amount is too high.then ask for the ticket. Let them keep your license. It more work for them and extremely less money. Think it was 3% for every fine imposed.
You just pop in the station the next day collect your license and pay a small fine.

Sorry to disappoint you but he didn't.

Maybe the fact that we hadn't committed any offence in the first place, and the cop could see I was in the mood for an argument had something to do with it.

Have you ever heard of anyone being charged for desecration of HM's image in relation to banknotes? Nope, me neither. Defacing public images, yes. Banknotes ... Bullshit. I would have pointed my feet at him too because Lonely Planet mentions that, but we were in the car at the time.

It's another of the many myths.

Theoretically, Thailand's wholly corrupt Police could charge you with anything though, as they are literally a law unto themselves.

I started a furore on Thaivisa when I said I kept money in my shoe.
