Thaksin: 'Tell me what you want'

(dpa) - Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has offered to postpone the snap election he has set for April 2, after opposition parties decided to boycott the polls, bolstering a mass movement calling for the premier's resignation.

The embattled prime minister dissolved Parliament last Friday and called for a snap election on April 2, but the maneuver has failed to derail a mass movement calling for his resignation.

"I am ready to do anything, just tell me what you want," Thaksin said in an appeal to the leaders of Thailand's three leading opposition parties who on Monday announced their decision to boycott Thaksin's snap election.

"I'm willing to cooperate but we all need to work under the constitution," Thaksin told reporters outside Government House.

The opposition's boycott is unprecedented in Thailand's volatile political history, leaving the country in somewhat unchartered waters this week.

It was not immediately clear if the opposition would respond to Thaksin's offer to postpone the snap polls if they reconsider their boycott.

"This just shows how Thaksin is desperate to hold an election," said Ong-art Klampaiboon, spokesman for the Democrat party. "But for us it's too late," he said of the postponement proposal.

On Monday the leaders of the Democrat, Chat Thai and Mahachon parties announced they would boycott the upcoming snap election after the prime minister showed a lack of sincerity in addressing their demand for constitutional reforms aimed at curbing the immense power of the premiership.

By boycotting the April 2 polls the opposition parties have allied themselves to a mass movement determined to force Thaksin to resign.

Thaksin, a billionaire telecommunication tycoon who has been prime minister since 2001, has suffered a credibility crisis since his family's 73.3 billion baht (1.9 billion dollar) sale of the Thaksin-founded Shin Corp to Singapore's Temasek Holdings last month.

The sale sparked outrage among many because it was finessed in such a way as to be totally tax free and amounted to putting national assets in foreign hands.

Thaksin built up his Shin Corp business empire largely on lucrative government concessions.

Anti-Thaksin protests over the weekend have escalated since the Shin Corp sale on January 23.

A demonstration on Sunday drew up to 100,000 protesters, according to some estimates. Another demonstration is planned in Bangkok next Sunday.

Oh well, the fortune-tellers are right then. They postpone the election date from 2nd of April already.

erm well actually his main start in this business was the American chappie who he stiffed for 10 million dollars worth of communication gear about 18 years ago, it finally went to court when toxin was prime minister, as you can obviously guess he won that case.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that in the past, power in Thailand has been spread through a number of smaller parties who have traditioanlly traded support for influence. This has prevented dicatatorial powers being concencentrated in one pair of hands.

Thaksin has broken this mould and it must come as a shock to Thais to discover how much abuse of power can be ascribed to a single individual when he has little restraining influence.

Those of us Westerners for whom this is not a surprise, should not adopt a patronising posture to those for whom this is a new, unexpected and deeply diasagreeable scenario.

I hope that GOW will continue to post her reports of the situation as it unfolds.
