I'd assume that they are using cloned cards where they have captured the PIN in some way, such as a fake card reader or spycam, maybe even just observing the number being typed. This could be from the UK or in Thailand but using a cloned card is best done at an ATM as the cards are normally just blanks. There are security cameras on a lot of ATM's in the UK now so they probably felt Thailand was an easier location to carry out the withdrawals.

Would you rather be mugged or your house broken into? People get their money back from these type of thefts and it is just a minor inconvenience, the banks lose out, but from the profits they post they are not bothered, in fact, they brought this on themselves by introducing such a poor security system.

In a country where credit card fraud is endemic, congratulations on the Thai Police in arresting these two heavyweight players.

^ I knew you'd find a way to turn a story about Brits being arrested into a criticism of Thailand somehow. Well done.

I'm not too worried about ATM fraud if I lose my card as they'd still have to get the PIN (difficult but not impossible) to withdraw any money.

I *do worry* about the bloody 'Visa Electron' capabilities of it and that the only identifier on the card is 'Preferred Member'. Everytime I have used this in Tescos or somewhere, I have never once seen the checkout girl actually compare my signature on the receipt to the one on the back.

Is it possible to get an ATM card (from Kasikorn bank) which is only an ATM card?

I'm not so worried about my credit cards as I only use overseas issued ones with a proper card protection insurance on them, so as long as I notify the issuer immediately about loss/theft then I'm not liable for any losees.

I can understand why you thought so; it would be easy to be critical of such lax law enforcement toward a crime that is incredibly widespread in Thailand and of how the UK's pondlife continues to find attraction in one of Thailand's premier tourist destinations.

And yet they caught the 'UK pondlife'. With such lax enforcement that's a pretty damning inditment on the standard of UK crooks. Go figure.

I think it's rather more a case of selective enforcement by the BiB as usual. These criminals obviously don't have the money to bribe their way out and didn't have the right connections.

As for "a damning indictment on the standard of UK crooks" I don't think so. Give a million monkeys a million typewriters and they are going to write the works of Shakespeare eventually.

Phuket Police failed to notice a huge caravan that had been parked to the rear of the hotel which contained further evidence that the family in question were in fact also wanted back in their native Port Talbot, Wales, Uk, for illegall parking on industrial land which had been earmarked for development by the local council into a stray dog shelter.

The British Embassy were instructed to send a pick up truck to tow the caravan back to their pound.

If they got some money they can pay their way out, if they aint then they got a few years in prison, a friend of mine done just under a million bahts worth of travellers checks, he done 3 days in jail and the deal was done, the bank flew over a guy from HongKong to pick up the cash, they also had to pay the police a couple of hundred thousand baht, and the immigration a small amount, charges all dropped and end of case.

Three Brits still in Phuket jail

Three Brits still in Phuket jail

PHUKET: Phuket Provincial Court has denied bail to a British family charged with bank fraud after they were caught using counterfeit cards to withdraw more than 100,000 baht from a Kasikorn Bank ATM in downtown Phuket City.

Lt Col Chakaphol Suchon of Phuket City Police Station told the Gazette that the three suspects are still being held at Phuket Provincial Prison awaiting their next court appearance.

Suspects Mark Hubert Veerasawmy, 44, his son Sonny, 19, and Jennifer Anne Chapman, 31, were arrested on February 18 after an alert citizen notified police that the father and son were behaving strangely. (Click here for the Gazette’s original report.)

The three, described by police as a family, have refused to give any details about how they obtained the fake bank cards, except to say that they bought them off a man named “Peter”, Lt Col Chakaphol said.

Finding the elder Mr Veerasawmy’s testimony unconvincing, investigators will continue to seek further evidence in the case, he said.

“Their request for bail was denied by the court, which cited the possibility that they would flee the country if released,” Lt Col Chakaphol added.

How many cards were they caught with? That was a few people hurt and foked over and ended up with a load of hassle, few years in a Thai prison will be character building and also educational for the guy, hell he will even learn Thai for, "Fok me, it's fish heads and rice again for dinner again."
