I think, even in Bangkok, there will be quite a few buildings that will still be standing, but will be unsafe and need to be abandoned.

We felt it at about 2pm and all thought we were having a senior moment. Then the alarm went off and we stood in the sun for about 3 hours trying to get kids home and on busses.
Knackered now. Gonna neck a few beers to get the energy to stock up.
Our house is under construction so boss man is heading there this weekend to check for structural damage.
Daughter was worried about the dogs.
There will be many acts of extraordinary heroism occurring in Myanmar now. Studies in western societies reveal it's really only men who risk their lives to save a stranger. The gender that claims to be ethically superior rarely undertakes these risks in the US. That's not to say the sheilas are useless. They will be comforting the dying and maimed.
good point.Quote:
Anyway, condo prices will be taking a hit.
thong lor hi so will be desperate to sell at any price.
sounds like a good time to buy.
Apart from a few aftershock tremors, another big one is unlikely in the near future. The pressure that had been building up as the tectonic plates along the fault line pushed against each other will have been released by the earthquake. Dont quote me on that though. Mendy knows about rocks and stuff, maybe he can give his opinion.Quote:
What sort of eejit would be in a concrete box 300 feet off the ground in Bangkok tonight?
^^^ I don't think it's an exact science Tax.
The pressure will for sure build up and get periodically released, but smutty innuendos aside, was this a prelude to a larger event or will thinks stabilise for a while? You would have thought that even in Thailand these things are monitored and that the 'Thailand Geological Society will have some idea.
Poor Myanmar sits right on the boundary of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate, so is no stranger to earthquakes. Things get complex at plate boundaries and I seem to remember that there was even a mini-plate called the Burma Plate, but I will have to read up on this.
This was my first personal experience of an earthquake and it felt weird, although obviously right on the periphery of things. Having spent a life at sea I'm used to movement, but this was different and not a nice feeling. My daughter (who's school was evacuated... in Korat!!!) said that her English teacher felt the 'weird' feeling and it made him light headed. Coincidentally enough, he is from Myanmar (but speaks better English than me... well, Reg Dingle at least).
Anyway, tonight I repaired our earthquake damage. The African warriors sustained only light impositions from their fall... one had lost his shield and the other one's spear had broken.
The aborigine family fared less well and I had to do some major gluing. To digress, this is really strange... but many years ago in a more happy and carefree stage of my life I once spent a couple of months in Alice Springs. A mate was a croupier at the Lasseters Hotel Casino (of 'Priscilla Queen of the Desert' notoriety) and I arrived for a brief visit but ended up staying. I was driving a station wagon, much beloved of the aboriginal community, and it was broken into regularly. Also, it was a real hassle walking around town at night due to the constant unwanted hassles by the aboriginals.
It was/is a problem.
Anyway, I was told that if ever I got mugged/attacked by an aboriginal, to kick him in the ankles. Apparently that is their weak spot because they have skinny legs
OK, so I digressed, but look at my earthquake damage.
It makes you think...

The BTS has been suspended until tomorrow morning, Friday night not going to be easy to get home from work for a lot of people.
And I've seen pictures of new build high rise been deformed after the quake, would think they are pretty unstable now.
Y'all are pansies there in CM, BKK and Korat. :D
It was probably a magnitude 6.0 in your areas. In my hood, a 6.0 is nothing to write home about. :)
(I've experienced a 7 + in my childhood, a 6.0 and various 4 & 5 mini quakes. At work, we have a fire & earthquake drill every quarter as mandated by the govt.)
Kidding aside, the damage in Myanmar seems massive. Thoughts & prayers...
^You're probably right... No comment... :D
Although there was this one time, at band camp... (kudos if anyone gets the reference!)
Water from a not-quite-rooftop pool spilled over due to the quake... This was in BKK.

Don't give them ideas for songkran.
On a very sad note been reading reports of 10,000 dead in Myanmar.
