Car fells 15 utility poles, causing blackout in Bangkok’s Phet Kasem area

Fifteen utility poles collapsed or broke and two cars sustained damage when hit by the falling poles when a motorist crashed into one of them on Kanchanapisek Road in Bangkok today.

The accident also caused a blackout for about 150 houses in the neighbourhood and technicians from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) are replacing the damaged poles to restore the supply.

Pol Lt Thanasak Suwanwong, a traffic officer at Phet Kasem police station, said the motorist appeared to be driving at high speed and lost control of the car as it approached a curve in the road.

The car rammed into and felled one roadside pole which brought down the other 14 like dominoes.

The motorist, who was not identified, sustained minor injuries. He now faces charges.

An MEA official said that the full damage cannot be estimated yet adding, however, that their engineers will try their best to restore power to the households as soon as possible.
