Sugar mills across Thailand suspended for air quality and road safety during New Year

    – The Ministry of Industry has ordered 57 sugar mills across Thailand to temporarily suspend operations until January 2, 2025, to address air pollution concerns and improve road safety during the New Year holiday.

The suspension targets pollution caused by the illegal burning of sugarcane, a practice known to degrade air quality. By halting sugarcane transportation, the measure is expected to reduce traffic hazards and ensure safer travel for citizens during the busy holiday season.

The decision aligns with the Ministry’s campaign for sustainable industrial reform, prioritizing cleaner, more transparent, and environmentally friendly practices while ensuring industrial operations support public health and safety.

Under the leadership of Minister Akanat Promphan, the Industry Ministry has made clear its plans to create a healthier and safer environment for all citizens, affirming the agency’s dedication to sustainable development and public well-being.

That is a jolly good idea. Crazy around here with everything from huge articulated trucks to small tractors dragging thei sugar to the mills along narrow public roads. Much, much safer when they stay at home.

The sugar cane story, government paid people to convert to growing sugar cane, (wife got money) tell your buddies to start building mills, maybe even have an interest in those same mills? get rid of gasoline that doesn't have Ethanol in it guaranteeing there is a market for the Ethanol, ignore the air pollution as "you" are profiting from the use of Ethanol - the corruption here runs deep....

The biggest issue really is that the Govt should subsidize for better equipment that not only harvests the sugar cane, but mulches the residue for the next year. They are pissing in the wind until that happens. In Northern California they grow rice and sugar cane and they never burn any of it, it illegal with basically an arsonist type penalty with no exceptions. They have the proper equipment to do the job. The Thai govt simply doesn't get it.

The biggest issue is enforcing the law.

Shutting down mills over the new year seems rather minor, and hardly worthy of the lap of honour.

Agreed Cy. Its a band-aid to appease the thai 'Netizens". If they wanted to really address the burning, it would be to support farmers with the right equipment and then enforce the laws to the strict limits and make it visible so others are aware. The rest of the debate is noise

I think it is technically illegal here? Locally they get around the rules by only burning at night, because obviously the police cannot see a fire in the dark. Oh, wait a moment ...

Stumpy raises a good point. Thai farmers could be more mechanised with govt support but they are not..to be fair to the thai farmer it's not just them.burning crops. It's the entire region.burning the sides of mountains to grow a crop on something lowlands consider un farm able
In Lao half the country's up in smoke. Let's not forget all that shit wafting down from china. A big job to get all of these folk to do something else when it's been traditional forever. With upland and lowland farming
