    Koh Kood Eyes Ecotourism Transformation

Minister of Tourism and Sports Sorawong Thienthong has visited Koh Kood in Trat province to address challenges and explore opportunities for transforming the island into a premier ecotourism destination. With its pristine natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere, Koh Kood holds strong potential to attract environmentally conscious, high-value travelers seeking a premium retreat, as well as those looking for a simple yet high-quality getaway.

During discussions with the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and local tourism operators, key challenges were identified, including low visitor spending compared to tourist numbers, water shortages, land rights issues, and limited mobile network coverage. Despite travel inconveniences, Koh Kood’s unspoiled landscape, adventure trails, and essential public utilities establish it as a unique and compelling destination. Plans are underway to improve infrastructure and accessibility for both residents and visitors.

The government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is currently considering plans to support Koh Kood’s sustainable development, aligning with the aspirations of the local community. Efforts will prioritize preserving the island’s natural environment while advancing infrastructure improvements and connectivity, all with a strong emphasis on ecological sustainability.

The government is also exploring private sector partnerships to establish air travel options to the island, supporting its development as a sustainable tourism destination that balances environmental preservation with the needs of residents and visitors.

Improving accesibility for visitors - yeah, that's always great for the environment.

    Airports in particular.

It certainly helped koh samui when they added an airport it's a bit pricey to fly in but if yer a potless tefler you can save up and get on a ferry. I wouldn't of thought oh kood was big enough or flat enough to have an airport. A bit like koh chang. Where would you put one? Probably one of the reasons it hasn't really developed. It was easy enough to drive down from Lao and stick the Fortuner on the ferry though and there are decent accommodation options. For all budgets but for me it's 4 star all they way after the ditch digging is done. Gotta treat yerself right cybil. Innit.

    Agree 100% with Cy.
Best way to keep pristine environment no humans. Pay residents to leave.
They could allow boat or day trips with zero impact with very high eco tax say 5000 baht per child and 10k per adult person and doubke for froeigners! per day to stop the types who drop litter everywhere.
Of course for now some locals need work and where there is something to sell it'll be sold for short term gain.
Airports, air travel his the wrong signal.

You can't stop progress cybil. Do you never use airports? Are you an aging hippy kinda tefler? How bizarre.40 years ago I thought it cute and quaint that I could rent a bungalow on koh samui or boracay for about $5.00 a night
No electrickery , hot beer , etc these days I'm well chuffed just to fly in and live in aircon comfort in a nice hotel. Cold beer and fresh food that won't make you shit like a duck. Improved accessibility for BLD yeah. Very nice

It is lovely. No cars in reality just songthaew pickups and small motorbikes. If you are looking for night life not the place to go. One high end resort the Soneva Kiri. Has its own airport on another island close by. In fact just a few months ago they lost one of their planes and several people were killed on their way there.

We had a great time during covid when the government was paying 40% of your bill and giving you spending money as well. A few shots.

It is indeed lovely AO. my point to cybil.
was it will never have an airport. there's just not enough tourism to sustain one. Look how many decades it took them to put one on koh samui and even now its only thai airways that can land there. They do love there monopolies the thais

Not yet. Went to Koh Chang earlier this year but it seemed difficult to get a boat elsewhere outside the tourist season. My son has backpacked his way around the islands there and liked it very much.

You just know that government involvement will involve pouring concrete to make a nature park.

    Christ...again?

    Definitely cba reading past that.

AO - we were there about 20 years ago, but on a separate island.

One of those deals including 3 meals. We must have eaten about half our weight in squid.

Would like to stay on the Main island for a while though. Reading this story makes me want to do it soon - maybe next smoke season.

We were on a roadie. Parked the car at the port jumped on a ferry. Very very nice island if you seek solitude
We had a great time I'm not knocking it. it's a bit off the beaten path and I'm glad we made the effort to go there but any talk of an airport is just talk. It's as simple as that cybil.pretty sure I posted a thread. Can't remember the title
